Hey, yea I know what you mean. I think the actor is making reference to religion in general, its pointing to the anti-homosexual reputation  it usually has, and the movie makes it a point to show, how hard it is to be homo-sexual, while being religious, in this case mormon.

The irony here is that the closet case dude is the simple simon who believes the world is perfectable. It was Roy and Louis who tried to get him to understand all through-out the movie that in fact the world is a shithole and that God has long since left building.
