i prefer this version then in the rainbows version the same goes for the original versions of 4 minute warning and videotape. but who am i to judge they are only the best band in the world ever so i should'nt judge.
Just a few words: people can't say this version "doesn't sound like Radiohead", "the organ is poor"... if you listened to Kid A songs before 2000 you'd say the same thing, and Radiohead is this, being sometimes not like Radiohead... that's why they're one of the best bands in history.
Radiohead shouldnt have released a different version... I waited for this song since 1998 and it came different... so comparisons are always made, but the final lines are just amazing, it's a shame they didn't put it on album version.
I don't know what I prefer. I HATE the organ shrieks in this version, especially around 3:35 and 4:08. New version: I really dislike the funk shuffle, Thom's voice is too bare, he sounds like the child molester from Family Guy. I do love its moments of climactic silence and the use of arpeggiated guitar support, but think the guitar is better in this earlier version around 3:55-4:15. The ending of this version is god awful. Main component I miss from this version is the glockenspiel.
@exogeographer I agree, but we can't unrate this version, cause everything they've experiences in 1996-2001 was just a huge transformation. That's why they're the best
i guess I am one of the few (or only who likes this version better han the one in in rainbows but I can only think it os because I spent years listening to this one and now it seems just perfect...makes me wanna cry everytime
This is the best version as there is Tom's layer of notes under/over the other guys. In the 'basement' version he just sings......leaving out the organ. A shame! But this is incredible.
This version makes me want to scream "FREE BIRD". It's the organ. I'm Southern, so of course I would think that, but still...
With that said, this is a fantastic version of it, but I have to say that I prefer the one that showed up on In Rainbows or - even better - the one that showed up in Meeting People is Easy.
This is definitely a good version, but the album version is so polished that it doesn't really compare for me. I think the instruments they used to record the album version are perfect. There's something about the organ that just doesn't quite fit the song.
I love the In Rainbows version but this performance is beautiful! I like that it's longer and the glockenspiel makes the melody so much more enjoyable.
Oh wow, this is the song that made my young self fall in love with Radiohead... when I first heard the newer version on In Rainbows it brought all those amazing feelings back.
I liked the nude version when it came out, but Big Ideas (don't get any) is what I will always come back to. I'm surprised so many of you like the in rainbows version better. A lot of the instrumentation on Big Ideas is outlandish and inadvisable, but somehow it worked with the song to create an effect that has resonated with me for over 6 years. I guess you had to be there.
And the funky bass octave-switching part that meshes so well with Thom's funky singing style on the album version is absent here. The resultant, natural swaying feel is thus absent. The brilliant string parts are missing. The drums in the album version are simpler but sound much better. As I mentioned before, the dramatic silence that makes the album version so memorable is missing. The eerie vocal backs are missing. The excellent ascending line Thom does to end the song is missing.
I'll restate what I said before. This version is inferior. Parts of it are just low quality because it was obviously underdeveloped at the time this recording took place. But mostly it's missing all the great elements of the album version. Plus, lyrics like "She kisses..." don't even sound like Radiohead lyrics. They sound like Dave Matthews' Band lyrics. The long, long "Raaaaaaaaaaa (breath) aaaaaails" is just obscene. AND THE ENDING, organ going 2-1, with the little drum thing... bad.
@optichumora Have to agree with you. The album version is a far more cohesive song. The funk elements that were introduced helped to make it tighter and simpler, while the string arrangements and effects are the lynchpin to the whole song around which everything else revolves. This early version sounds like Radiohead's impression of Procol Harum, and I can't say it suits them that well. The whole Hammond B3 and minor arpeggio thing is out of sync with who they are.
@optichumora Yet, the lines "Now that you've found it, it's gone, Now that you feel it, you don't, You've gone off the rails" is still strong and just perfect, and maybe shouldnt have be removed.
@optichumora You are most probably right, but I still like this version better than the album version. Just sounds like theres so much more feeling in this song than the album version, and all these flaws you mention, well, i enjoy them. I enjoy the ending with the "raaaaaaaaaaaaaaa (breath) aaaaaaaaaaaaails". So, i think i disagree with you, even though you are somewhat right; this version is superior to the album version.
i really wish the organ and what they did with the song at 3:35-4:00. but i do love the first 30 seconds of the album version as well. so i guess it works its self out
this just doesn't feel right, but i like the "She kisses you with tongues and pulls you to the bed Don't go, you'll only want to come back again" and i don't understand why they cut it out
@takovarra maybe they cut it because the meaning of the song had changed over time for thom? take out that line and the song's meaning is far more cryptic.
I think it's because this way the song is less literal and so you can apply the meaning to a lot of things and not just feeling powerful/loved through sex ... I think Thom said the song was about feeling to be great when you know you're not or something like that ... Hope that makes sense ^^
I love hearing the early versions of my favorite songs, but I definitely love the album version of this one much better. Notice how Thom's voice wavers on some of the lines? It's because they hadn't yet committed to the lyrics, changes, etc. I'm sure he also didn't feel totally comfortable singing such a bare line. The funk-like elements he added in the album version took care of that.
Biggest change: the climactic silence missing at 4:16. That's my favorite part of the album version.
@optichumora Nothing is accidental... imagine if you listened to album version without having listened to this... I say the album version is technically better because we once heard to this piece of art, even not perfect :)
The "In Rainbows" version so much better. Its haunting, spare arrangement showcases Thom's incredible voice and beautifully conveys the quiet despair of the lyrics
This version? It's just too bouncy and busy to suit the lyrics. And that cheesy organ is intrusive--Thom's voice gets drowned in all those overwrought flourishes. Johnny's glock is pure genius on "All I Need", but here it's like an obnoxious toddler wailing on a toy xylophone.
@cynthiailly HTTT IS MY FAVORITE. To me it marks a turning point in the band's ideology were their lyrics became more spiritual and introspective and not as dower and outrospective. Not to mention the sonic textures of HTTT are amazingly colorful/unbound and not as immaculately rigid like the majority of their post Ok Computer recordings.
By the way I do love In Rainbows it's just Thom's releases such as "Hearing Damage" and "The Hallow Earth" that have me concerned.
To me the In Rainbows version has a completely different mood than this one, this version builds and swells, and Johnny's Farfisa organ with the xylophone is just magical. This is by far one of my favorite Radiohead songs, especially this particular live version.
This version lives in my heart forever. Please Thom, release this when it was first recorded back then, as well as big boots, follow me around, lift (1996 pinkpop version), last flowers (which was also recorded back then) & i promise!
i think the in rainbows version is better... it's just more appropriate for a song called "nude" to be stripped down. also, i like how the melody of the organ and glock eventually turned into thoms falsetto
I think I prefer the In Rainbows version, though this is still interesting to see. Honestly can't think of any other bands that develop their songs so much as this.
it's called "nude" because, when it comes down to it, this song is about the bare essentials of who people (or a certain individual) really are. "you paint yourself white". you try to appear pure. "and fill up with noise". you tell yourself everything is alright. "now that you feel it, you dont". now that you have it, really, whats the point of having it anymore? listen to the song.
Or "Nuet". But I can argue that even they called it "Big Ideas" (2002-08-07 Salamanca, Spain), as they referred it as such as well. It wasn't officially called "Nude" until the 2006 theater tour.
I think the emotion is still there...but ten years seperates them. His voic is much softer now he couldn't have put the exact same type of emotion in as here
esta cancion me hace recordar cuando en la vida tuve un roblema super grabe y pues.. cada vez ke me hechaba a descarzar ponia esta cancion y me ponia a llorar..:´(
anyone who loves this song should type in "pawel osmolski" into google, and then go to the first hit, the devilhood page. there you'll find a bunch of mixes, including this, big ideas. he uses thom's voice from a version in japan where it was just thom on guitar, and then builds the rest of the song himself. great studio quality version to have as a fan.
I could never tell you what Radioheads best song is, but in my opinion, this is (Both versions) by far the most beautiful song I have ever heard in my life.
i don't think anybody should fuck with allbearsrule. he/she provides excellent radiohead videos. plus somebody had said what you said like 2 replies prior, although in a less aggressive manner, which is best.
in my opinion every song is perfect and when i say perfect i dont mean "flawless". I mean it is so good you can just feel the emotion and it actually makes you think you are the antagonist but in actuality its my main man Mr. Yorke! hahaha just kidding ive never met him in my life
i dont know if i made that much sense but its kinda hard to describe the feelings i get when i hear these "masterpieces" of theirs
At first, I really liked the organ version and was totally down on the studio version...but I listen to it a year later, and there's just no comparison. The studio version is so much more beautiful
compared to this performance the "in rainbows" version seems almost too stripped down in my opinion. you dont have that fantastic climax at the end with the four part voice harmony, but this version just keeps my interest even more intent with an almost constant rise and fall throughout he entire selection.
I love "She kisses you with tounges and pulls you to the bed / don't go you'll only want to come back again". They shouldn't have got rid of that for the album version, but I think the album one's better overall :)
i prefer this version then in the rainbows version the same goes for the original versions of 4 minute warning and videotape. but who am i to judge they are only the best band in the world ever so i should'nt judge.

anyone who loves this song should type in "pawel osmolski" into google, and then go to the first hit, the devilhood page. there you'll find a bunch of mixes, including this, big ideas. he uses thom's voice from a version in japan where it was just thom on guitar, and then builds the rest of the song himself. great studio quality version to have as a fan.

I like this one a little more too. It's the "you've gone off the rails" part. It's just as emotional as it gets.

i actually like this version a little better...i cant wait to hear theyre next album....

Great song indeed, it's so hard to tell which one is their best...

I could never tell you what Radioheads best song is, but in my opinion, this is (Both versions) by far the most beautiful song I have ever heard in my life.

There you go, both versions are incredible, this song is good to listen whatever your emotional state

I think Nude, whether thing version or the In Rainbows version, is the best song Radiohead has ever come up with.
crudip 3 years ago 5
well.... That is certainly debatable ;-)

faggot, its HIS opinion, not yours.

i don't think anybody should fuck with allbearsrule. he/she provides excellent radiohead videos. plus somebody had said what you said like 2 replies prior, although in a less aggressive manner, which is best.

but there're many "best".

radiohead has so much emotion its insane
in my opinion every song is perfect and when i say perfect i dont mean "flawless".

Holy shit, Jonny's part in this version is ridiculously cool.

the organ makes this version soo epic.
does anyone know where i can get an mp3 recording of this video?

the organ makes this version so epic
eighteentwelve 3 years ago
compared to this performance the "in rainbows" version seems almost too stripped down in my opinion. you dont have that fantastic climax at the end with the four part voice harmony, but this version just keeps my interest even more intent with an almost constant rise and fall throughout he entire selection.

Proof that Radioheads music is truly timeless. I love the version.

beceause it is a beautiful song maybe?

This song is like a pessimism anthem. so why do i enjoy it so?
TheFillmoreJive 3 years ago 5
I love "She kisses you with tounges and pulls you to the bed / don't go you'll only want to come back again". They shouldn't have got rid of that for the album version, but I think the album one's better overall :)

i feel the same with karma police
instead of "her hitler hairdo is making me feel ill"
it was "she stares at me as if she owns the world"
although both very good lines
when you look at the rest of the song they dont fit very well
ztoigo 3 years ago
i love this version... both are great

this song rocks on so many levels. Thom Yorke's voice is amazing.

You gotta be incredibly wise to have such a beautiful song for ten years, yet resist its release because you feel it hasn't reached maturity.
Talk about nurturing!

I still think this is the best version of the song. I am so "lucky" to have been at this show.

I wish I could sing even 0.01% as well as Thom...what an amazing voice he has
and how can Jonny play the organ and the xylophone at the same time?!
Thom's voice and that organ bit at 3:41... just gutwrenching... I envy everyone in that audience
mktrees 3 years ago 5
goodgod this is a beautiful performance
I LOVE the new Nude but I wish they could've incorporated the organ somehow:)

I really like the organ, jonny should break that out again
