@yngtxtopbear - I disagree that this routine was uninspired. Yes, she was still somewhat young at this time and not quite fully-matured. But she skated with alot of speed and energy in this routine...and her jumps, with the exception of the flip, were exceptional. She deserved the bronze over Lu Chen, hands down.
i remember this like if it was yesterday i fall completely in love with this young lovely girl and this msuic i have never found did someone know recorded this version of ah! nastasia
@yngtxtopbear since technically she was far better than Maria and Lu and artistically this was a charming program and not that bad either. Lu wa pathetic technically even with a fairly clean skate. Her spins by 98 were a joke and her jumps were barely complete or underotated. Maria was capable of better but as usual made alot of mistakes and fell apart with nerves in the long program.
@yngtxtopbear I did not see an uninspired performance. I saw a performance with alot of energy and spirit, and a great deal of determination to step up in a big moment after a decline in results the last couple seasons. Yes the artistry wasnt great, but none of the girls other than Lipinski and Kwan had a complete package that night anyway. I still think she deserved to beat Lu and Maria since Lu technical is weak and Maria made major mistakes. All 3 were close though, hence the split.
Maria skated last, and also she was more polished and had a better choreographed program, I think that's why they had Maria 4th and Irina 6th. Irina was pretty young here, and still somewhat immature. Don't get me wrong though, I love Irina and think she's wonderful.
@birbanto24 I agree, even though I'm a huge fan of Maria. Lu Chen's long program wasn't that great either, and she won the bronze. Most of her jumps were underrotated, although her artistry was nice. I still think Irina deserved the bronze over the other 2.
Her spirals were actually pretty good. Good speed and she changes position but stays on one foot. Mostly good jumps, too. But she improved a lot in the years to come.
I think she fell on the flip because she was thinking about adding a 3 to it since she missed it on the earlier salchow, but it came as a last minute thought and she fell.
She fell on the flip because was still struggling with her technique on this jump (she omitted it during the 97 Champion Series Final, for example). It wouldn't be 1999 until she would rework the entrance to the point where she was comfortable using it in the SP. In her final competitive year she would include two in her FS.
In the mid to late 90s Irina was only attempting 3S+3Lo and 3T+3T, the former being more successful. There's no way she was trying to add a 3Lo to the 3F.
This was one of my favourite long programs of that year.
I loved her skating much more in the late nineties than later on when she won Olympic medals. She lost her spark later. Here she was so much fun to watch!!
I find Irina's programmes inventive, and she does skate with enthusiasm. Many top skaters lack both of the afore-mentioned, going for safe but boring programmes.
Yea triple flip is a hard jump. I find it very easy to rotate down (i.e. lean) and land it forward, as well as easy to under or rotate the jump simply becasue it's so difficult. The take off is prone to be over or underpowered, or leaned into too much. I personally find the lutz easier than the flip, but I've only done double jumps. I learned the double luts about 6 months before I could consistently do a flip. Lutz is so easy to get accustomed too, as long as ur comfy with the edge it need
there are some really interesting comments here. The russians were never powerhouse in the woman's figure skating and I don't think they will ever be. Why some people keep bitching about like they own the sports, this is too funny!
Meh, I would still keep Chen Lu in third. Her program was far more artistic. Irina has speed, big jumps, fast spins, but I felt no connection with her. I doubt the audience did either. This was almost like "Ok I need to rush and get this over with!" I'd have given her a 5.8 for technical and a 5.6 for artistic.
Definitely 3d to me, her speed is fantastic (and she almost hit the boards before the spirals LOL-. Can anyone explain why she only attempted (and landed!!) the triple toe-triple toe at that competition? I never understood it.
Funny that's the way I felt about Michelle all those years. I can't pin point it. I guess it's up to individual taste they both have there strengths and weaknesses. Irina has huge jumps and innovative spins and very inadequate spirals. Michelle is grace personified and always seemed very polished and those spirals were spectacular, but her spins were always lacking especially layback spin. In any case it was great to watch both of them all those years. It's hard to imagine one without the othe
because Irina is a jumper and she concentrated too much on the jumps, not much left for other elements. Also she telegraphed almost every jumps which I really really hate. With that being said, I do like her 2002 olympics SP, she seemed to work on the artistic elements and the result was very promising. Unfortunately when she came back at 2005, she was back to her old routine again - jumps only nothing else.
I would have given Slutskaya or Butyrskaya the bronze. Lu Chen technically was so far behind the two Russian girls by that point. So even with Slutskaya and Butyrskaya making a couple technical mistakes and not being at their best technically because of those, and Chen's artistry and Slutskaya's lack of artistry I still would had Chen behind. For me:
That's dumb, grafgirl. Slutskaya only did 5 clean Triples, the same as Chen. She wasn't THAT far ahead technically and Lu Chen also clearly deserved a 5.9 for presentation. Your marks for Butyrskaya are too high as well. How exactly did she deserve to be .2 ahead of Chen technically when she only 5 Triples as well (1 of which wasn't completely clean)?
Chen was considerably weaker technically then all the other top skaters by 98. Her spins which were never great totally sucked by then. Her jumps were wild in the air, all had wild swinging free legs on landings (worse then Marias even), barely got rotation in time and were often cheated. Even though Chen eked out the bronze the judges agree with more quite a bit. Despite completing more jump content then either Russian her tech. marks were by far the lowest.
There were 5 eastern european judges on this panel and 7 european judges in total. The fact that Chen received the Bronze Medal is a pretty clear indication of how much better she skated.
Slutskaya had an immature program and performance. Butyrskaya's program was good but her performance was lackluster. Chen skated with passion and interpreted her music superbly.
Hmm I think bronze was tossup between Maria and Irina. I agree with 5.7 technical and 5.6 artsistic for Irina. Maria I would give 5.5 technical and either 5.7 or 5.8 artistic. Marks are a ranking system, not a reflection of absolute value, so knowing the 2nd mark is the tiebreaker whether I gave Maria 5.7 or 5.8 on artistic would depend if I gave her bronze or not. Lu I agree with only 5.4 technical and probably 5.7 artistic for me. She was past her prime and did not deserve bronze.
it's interesting to see she failed the triple flip in every olympics she was in, here in nagano also in salt lake and she doubled it in Torino, and the flip also was the jump Michelle had trouble with in the 3 olympics, she had a shaky landing here, a fall in salt lake and it was the flip the jump that made Michelle realized she wasn't goona be able to compete in 2006. what a jump.
It seems to be the deal breaker...Nancy Kerrigan doubled hers in 1994 possible leaving the door open for Oksana...Sasha fell on her first one in 2006...Lu Chen struggled on the triple flip in 1994 and 1998.
This remains my favourite Slutskaya lp.

it is sincere and real skating, unlike Americans.who smiles and emotions are not real, and "glued"to thier faces
