I'm baking a biscuit, {She's} willing to risk it While I'm cooking breakfast for the one I love. {I'm} wiping the dishes and breaking the dishes While I'm cooking breakfast for the one I love. I serve a plate of steaming oatmeal Taste it but schucks! Who the heck wants oatmeal, sprinkled with "Lux?" {She} eats a big plateful (and) Faints right after breakfast For the one {she} loves
Janet Klein recorded this song, but without the verse about "sprinkled mit Lux" (soap flakes, which few will remember.)
There is a recent video of Janet performing the complete song. Links don't seem to work in these comments, but you can do a YouTube search for "breakfast"+"janet klein" and you'll find it.
@Fiftiesflashback Lox is what you Americans call smoked salmon how can you sprinkle smoked salmon? Lux is soap and the idea is that she is an incompetent young housewife
"Real" or not, it's the epitome of sin in Judaism. The concept of "If sin, you might as well do it big way and enjoy it" is expressed in Yiddish as "if you do eat bacon, let it be such a juicy piece that the fat would drip down your beard". I love Fanny Brice and... bacon. Like B, I'm amused by the accent shift, and merrihew meant "Funny Girl", of course.
How could such a nice Jewish girl be cooking bacon for her man? I love the way she shifts accents and though I'm a "modern woman" applaud the way she sings. Thanks.
Not only was she a great Vaudeville star but was immensely popular on radio until the end. And yet, except for a flurry of interest at the time of the play/film Funny Face, she seems mostly forgotten by most people. Youtube to the rescue.
LOL. Now I can just hear all the "modern" women saying "No way, he's cooking breakfast for me". LOL Anyway, I love this song. Thanks for posting. --Bill
I love Fanny, I didn't know about Be Yourself - I actually found out about this song because Gelber & Manning covered it!

What a powerhouse. Hilarious and charming, but always like you're best friend. Fanny Brice was beyond a legend. Thank you for the song.

Besides being a great comedienne, she was great actress, a great singer and a great character.

Oh, she rules.
By the way, if anyone doesn't see what's remarkable about this song for its time: she's not MARRIED to the guy she's singing about.

How do you know she's not married?
Apparently he's not Jewish either if he's eating
bacon.
Used to have an LP record of Fanny songs. She was both a comedienne and a torch singer.
Tx 4 the post. Been years since I've heard
this great old song.

Just great! Made my whole day. Maria Muldaur lovingly remade it in the 1990's, great posting.

A nice, clean transfer from an original 78.
This is so preferable to those masturbators that play poorly mic'ced collectible records with steel needles.

sprinkled with LOVE, not Lux or lox!
IChewieK9 2 years ago
It rhymes with "shocks" if I'm hearing right. And why would she ask "Who the heck likes hot milk sprinkled with love?" It's "lox."

enjoyed it a lot. I said what happened to the
yiddish accent, and then she went into it at
the end.

Since you mention giblets, maybe Fanny was preparing Turkey Bacon.

Charming. The lady has a distinctly American way of singing that is very captivating in spite of - or because of ? - the message.
