The winning lifter was deaf and was waiting for a visible down signal, which the referees had not given. ignoring the rule avoided some negative publicity.

I remember chirstos and other coaches protesting it, but he didn't hear the buzzer and the head ref did not give him a down signal. so he held it and the coach ran up to tell him to drop it becasue a lift can be turned down if it isn't lowered. I guess it is considered show boating. anyway he got it and if it would have been turned down it would have been overruled by the jury and the lift would have counted. to many pointless rules.
