  • 4:35 of truth and beauty in an often mean and silly world.Live long and prosper.

  • no idea whats so crazy about it.. it's really good though. i wish i could improve jazz like this guy. awesome tone man, and great playing!

  • Thats got to be one of the best telecaster jazz tones I've ever heard. What amp and strings do you use? Great playing too BTW.

  • @DjangoVanGogh Thanks. Make sure you check out Ed Bickert! I'm playing through a FX pedal's USB port directly into the computer. Stings are either 12-52 flatwounds or 11-50, I forgot whcih.

  • nice tune, nice sound and such a nice guitar!

  • Just a line of appreciation and encouragement. I think there is great artistry in what you're doing and I can hear what you're going for; I also think it's truly beautiful. Thanks, compliments and best wishes.

  • great sound which pots are in the guitar 250k or 500k if I may ask and I see that the pickup is mounted in reverse ???

    thanks

  • @rickk1947 I'm not sure on the pots. But I don't think the pickup is on backwards.

  • Bickert sounds the same with a regular tele - see YouTube " I never been in love before"

He probably got the hum-bucker for Hum.

I know he uses round wounds .13 e string

cause I asked him a while back.

I like his style chords are like fender Rhodes

7th in base jazz piano style.

  • Very nice job, man!

  • Whether the difference is huge is subjective. To me, it's night and day. When I first became interested in jazz guitar, my only electric guitar was a MIA HSS Strat Deluxe. I rolled back the tone, boosted the mids and kill the highs... but it still didn't sound like a good Humbucking neck pup. If I wanted to play jazz on a standard Tele (and I wouldn't) I'd put a stacked coil-tapped Humbucker in the the bridge position..

  • A gibson Classic 57 pup is warm and fat. The neck pickup normally found in a Tele is glassy.

  • I'm not sure: I never owned a single coil in the neck position tele (this is a tele special: it came with a humbucker which I upgraded). But in general, I don't hear the subtleties that other people insist are there. But I rarely play with distortion, and these things matter more when one does.

  • Excellent !

  • fantastic! i'm really glad i came across this video!

  • Beautiful playing. What strings (guage) are you using?

FYI: You can get a Custom Tele (US or Mexico) that comes with a DiMazio style neck pickup, but it has this bigger/uglier pick guard and I'm not sure why they did that, but I am still amazed how right it sounds for jazz.

  • EXCELLENT,BEAUTIFUL and WONDERFUL interpretation.

  • Flippin' fantastic :_)

  • Nice stuff !!

  • I don't know the answer to that, sorry.

  • I'm pretty sure I'm hearing some direct lifts from the "Ed Bickert and Friends" CD, live at some festival in Europe. Nice playing. Ed is still the best in my books.

  • The head is lifted from the recording he made with Bill Mays. I haven't heard the one you mentioned, I'll have to check it out.

  • It's made in mexico. It came with a standard size humbucker, so I didn't have to do anything to the body or pickguard when I replaced the pup.

  • Great playing, very inspiring! I'm another HUGE Ed Bickert fan; as far as I'm concerned he's the BEST true/traditional jazz guitarist of the past generation. Thanks for sharing your talents here!

  • thanks. I think Bickert's "live at the garden party" CD is jazz guitar perfection. I wore out my vinyl copy and was thrilled when they released it on CD

  • I was fortunate to find 4-5 of his vinyl albums a few years ago when a radio station was dumping all their records (for around $1 each!), and since then, have collected as much other stuff on CD as possible. I agree with your choice of Garden Party; I also love an album/CD he did with pianist Bill Mays; over the top tasteful playing by both, and their interplay is "tele"pathic (sorry about the pun!). Great stuff.

  • Killer jazz tone. Nearly sounds like an archtop. Can you get a similarly nice "jazz" sound when you play thru an amp and not a zoom box and computer? Do you ever use an amp? What kind? Tanx

  • Well, the "perfect tone" is elusive for sure. It seems to depend on the room more than the equipment in my experience. But I am happy with the amp I use (Clarus amp/ RE speaker); you can hear it on some of my other videos, e.g. with the (x)-tet.

  • ....

  • Man that is some mighty fine playing there!

  • what tune are you playing over?

  • not sure what crossover jazz is, and hard bop tends to be more blues/groove based in my experience. Plain old vanilla jazz guitar, I suppose.

  • this is jazz music, come on what did u think it was.

  • Just f´g professional. Lots of class in that playing.

    You're an excellent player

  • how old are you

  • Gorgeous!!!!

    Are you using 11's, flats?

  • 12s flats

  • which guitars or pickups are the best for this jazz kind of blues sound?

  • what pickups have you got there?

  • gibson classic in the neck, stock bridge.

  • love the sound man

  • Excellent warm, smooth tone from that Tele and nice playing!

  • Gorgeous tone. Ed Bickert would definitely approve. 5 Stars!!!!

  • very nice and smooth sound.

  • Very nice.

Saw Ed Bickert at the Upstairs Jazz club (Montreal) a few times (he's a perennial favorite). Wonderful, laid back, and easy going.

I'm sure Ed would approve ;-)

    ~app

  • You can hear the thickness of the strings. Ed Bickert's influence is clearly visible. At least in the choice of equipment.

  • your a player man! Love your tone.

  • Is it allowed to ask, what other equipment was used by you?

  • I used a zoom G2.u1 pedal, USB output into the computer.

  • PK- Tickled my feet and dazzled the neurons. You've improved a bit since 79...;-) The quest for tonal purity. You're pretty damn close. G'donya mate!! Keep grin'n while you pick'm...Kmower thanks for the ride. I'm up for another.

  • Nice Tele. Awesome tone.

    Great playing!

  • Paul, that tele sounds sweet! Very warm tone. Nice choice, two thumbs up. What size strings?

  • 12-56 Flat wounds, wound G. (Standard issue Jazz strings)

  • ouch man, as a blues player I cant speak to jazz technique, but I sure hope they have special tricks so you dont blow your hands out with those monsters.
