  • Stunningly beautiful! Thank you so much for sharing it!

  • Nice work!

  • What I love most about this is the transition to the matching major key when he ups the root at around 0:50. Really tasteful, the melody switches over like magic.

He also captures a raw old time sound in it and nice instrument choice, at some point I'll have to find out how this sounds on a regular mandolin :)

  • whats the difference between the mandola and octave mandolin?

  • Ahhhhh very relaxing.

  • i am jealouse

  • Superb playing! Really enjoyed this

  • That was beautifull

  • Alright. I've decided. Octave mandolin is going to be my first instrument. Now to save up to buy one! Do you have any recommendations on who to buy from?

  • @AEtherBreather I love Rigel Mandos ever since i got a Rigel ct110. Breedlove mandos are awesome too, when i was in the market for a new piece i was hanging out at the mandolin cafe message boards, i'd post a link but my acct got locked the last time i did! if you google "mandolincafe" it should be the first link. While you're at it google "elderly instruments" their cd selection is awesome! Good luck!

  • That's beautiful

  • holy crizzap you are good at this

  • awesome performance, awesome piece, great music, i love this kind of melodies, so pure... it simply great

  • sweet

  • You are a genious!

  • Please make some more of this. I like this kind of music.

Very laid-back, a bit like Dowland.

  • juste magnifique

  • love it how he plays rhythm and melody at the same time

  • Awesome job Olivier! What tunings do you prefer on Octave Mandolin? Fingerstyle sounds great on this instrument!!!

  • very very nice!!!!

  • you should end it with harmonics.

  • Nice.

  • and is traditional mandolin played with a pick or finger style?

  • Is this your main instrument of choice? also how much did this cost you and how long have you been playing?

  • what brand of mando is that?

  • This is an amazing tune! What tuning do you have?

  • Lovely tune!. What is it called Uldry?.

  • What is the make and model of your instrument? This is very good!

  • Can you tell me who made your instrument?

  • I am looking for an octave mandolin. I love the sound and look of yours. What is it?

    Thanks

  • Very nice playing and composition.

  • great played !

  • this is probably gonna sound stupid, but its like the same concept as a 12 string guitar right? the strings are octave right? I'm still pretty new to the mandolin and I was wondering, great song by the way. Almost has a renaissance touch to it.

  • @politicalanomaly Mando's tend to be tuend in myriad different ways. They can be 5ths, or a whole range of different folk tunings.

  • @politicalanomaly A mandolin's strings are paired into the same notes. some are octaves, some are just doubled to increase the volume of the instrument. and the tuning, from a guitar standpoint, is the bottom four strings (EADG) upside down (GGDDAAEE). This makes learning and remembering chords a little easier.

  • @dvgeiger well, you can tune it anyway you want. but i think the most common tuning, at least for bluegrass, is the one i mentioned

  • @dvgeiger thank you!

  • do u have tabs for this?

  • hey dude, do you have any tabs/sheet music for this. I have worked out some of it but some of the turnarounds i cant get.

    cheers

  • mp3 version please? i'd buy it from itunes if you made one.

  • Sounds remarkably like "galway bay", were you at all inspired by that? :)

  • Such a sweet sound coming from that thing.

I should really see to it that the next instrument I buy is an octave mando.

  • Could u might send me a tab of what u played? =x

    It sounds so amazing!

    Greetz ^^.

  • gorrgeous.

  • Oh.

  • Beautiful. I gotta get my hands on an octave mandolin at some point. Right now all I have is a Crafter M-70E which, in addition to not being an octave mandolin, is quite honestly one of the most putrid pieces of shit I have ever played in my life. /rant.

  • nice

  • This song is timeless

  • what tuning do you use (strings) I am thinking of using octave string tuning do you know anything about this or have you tried it?Thanks

  • Beautiful piece, I play an octave Mandolin made by Paul Doyle in Galway. Sometimes I tune it GDAD as wll as GDAE, what tuning is used here?

  • Beautiful piece, I play an octave Mandolin made by Paul Doyle in Galway. Sometimes I tune it GDAD as wll as GDAE, what tuning is used here?

  • Okay, it's been a month but I actually bought a mandolin (not entirely to do with this video, but it helped). I know that it will be a good many years before I can even think about playing like this, but I just figured that the creator would want to know that he has inspired someone to learn such a beautiful instrument

  • EPIC!

  • have no words O_o AMAZING!!! :)))))

  • whats the difference between an octive mandolin and a bouzouki?

  • I thought tats an irish bouzki,,,,,,

  • i loved your song

  • Absolutely beautiful composition and performance. I'm inspired.

  • i always thought this instrument is called irish buzuki

  • What's the difference between a bouzouki and an octave mandolin/mandola really?

  • this is the greatest mandolin video ive heard in a long time. you inspire me so much to pick up my mando now, although its 11pm and my parents would get pissed...lol and my mando sucks but meh who cares! thanks man!!

  • Fantastic composition and a fantastic sounding instrument.

  • The melody is realy great I like it! Seen this wideo many timen, but I didn't knew that you composed it :)

  • classic and haunting ..... very nice

  • Makes me wanna go pick up mandolin :p

  • nice

  • i want one now, wish i had the cash

  • is a octave mandolin the same as a tenor mandola or octave mandola?

  • this is amazing. I love the sound! It inspires me to write!!!

  • This is great! Simply awesome!!

  • very nice ... bravo

  • non riesco a smettere di riascoltarla!... complimenti davvero! it's great!!! ;)

  • I don't think I said this earlier - but this is a really nice piece - very catchy melody :=)

  • simply awesome \o\

  • Where is your lovely wench? :p

  • This is brilliant. This is exactly the kind of music that I would like to play. Anyone have any suggestions as to where to find such music or what name we can give to this kind of music?

Plus, Olivier, post some tabs! Please! My octave mandolin can't wait to play this song...

  • It's pretty folky. Look up Brian Borus march on the irish bouzouki...that'd be Irish folk then.

  • it seems to me some kind traditional irish music..or maybe celtic, but certainly from north Europe..

  • There's actually no such thing as "Celtic" music - when people think "Celtic" music, they mean Irish and Scottish. There were people all over Europe and even parts of Asia who spoke languages from the "Celtic" family of languages; but as these are dead languages and cultures, we don't know what their music sounded like; this is decided Irish sounding in my opinion.

Sorry if that sounded condescending; I was just trying to inform :=)

  • no problem man..!i'm always open to information!we cannot know everything!so,thanks!=-D

  • barrry9

You are absolutely correct. How is it someone so young knows this much about one of the most ancient of civilizations..Much more evidence of the CELTS has been discovered in the past 15 years, but is still not widely known & almost unheard of by the general public.

  • haha - well you're talking to someone from an Irish family but also someone who loves his history ;=)

  • This is brilliant, promise me you'll never stop composing songs like this :p

  • It sings for our souls :)

  • excellent! 5 stars!

  • That's just great.

  • a question to olivier. did you make this song. and also can you tell me the name if this song? please i would really apreaciate it.

  • sounds very medeval

  • yah your so right!

  • sounds lovely :)

  • I'm amazed. I feel I know this very tune very well, but if it's your own composition how can that be? This will bug me.

  • Have u named the song yet? and do you have sheet to share?=)

  • je l'adore!

  • What appears on that video is clearly finger picking. (Melody + bass line)

  • Any chance you could tab this out I just got an octave mandolin and would love to try playing this

  • Wow! I never get sick of this. I really hope you write more solo octave mando songs.

  • You are a genious! Great music! What the name of your tune?

  • That was awesome :)

  • Love it :)

  • youre awesome :O

  • I'm not interested in the notes themselves, but I'd be fascinated to know the musical history and influence of the composer. How did you get to be able to create and play such a beautiful piece?

  • Im loving this tune. And loving the Medieval feel to it. Great work.

  • One of the best tunes i never heard, i fell in love with the sound of your octave mandolin.

  • a wonderful piece!

  • GIA MPOYZOYKI EISAI

  • holy shit thats so fuckin good OMG

  • is that in regular tuning? I mean GDAE

  • Very nice!

  • I could listen to this forever.

  • yea can you?

  • can you try that with any other stringed instruments, for example a guitar, or an electric guitar, or maybe even a violin and cello?

  • Violins, Fiddles and Mandolins Have very nearly the same chords. A song from any of these can be played on the others.

  • @noctusnal a fiddle is a violin.

  • @noctusnal fiddle and violin are pretty much the same instrument, the name is more about the style that they're played

  • Wow, always a trip to see people playin fingerstyle. Totally rad & cool composition, too!
