Thanks so much for the kind comments! The "smart" in the title of the video refers to when I tell them to sit and they lie down, so it's supposed to be sarcastic. I made this video when my 12 year old BT had advanced brain cancer, so he had lost the ability to do quite a few of his tricks, like "dance", and "roll over" and "play dead" and "sing". But he still loved his treats.

My BT is only ten weeks and is already learning tricks they are so clever, i cant wait to take him running anybody know what age i can reasonable expect him to go running

@griff4035 you have already probably figured out by now, but my BT puppy didn't really want to go running until about 9 months old, and at that point, I could not run far enough for him.  3 mile runs when he was one did not phase him in the slightest. He loved it!

Loved the video, I have a 10 week old puppy border called Mowgli, he is a handful but love him so much given us so many laughs in just the last couple of weeks of having him.... starting to train him soon as x

Thanks for all the sweet comments, folks! Quigley, the old dog, passed away in 2009 of a brain tumor. I can't believe it's been that long. But we still have Abbey, and she is amazing. I taught her to sit when I hold up a 3x5" card that says "SIT". Now I am trying to get her to lie down when I hold up one that says "DOWN". I am doing it by scenting the 2 cards differently. I will post a video of that if I can get her to do it!

My BT Taffy does the same thing when you tell her to sit. She lies down instead, but it's only when she REALLY wants a treat and you won't give her one.

@mrfizzzzzzzy Quigley is just really old, he is 12 in this video, so that is why he is so white! The other dog is a puppy, and she is really dark for a border, her grandfather was a blue and tan.

Aww, really cute! I have a border terrier too and I love to teach him tricks and he loves learning them.. He can do quite a bunch of tricks now. I think they are really smart dogs, they can be taught a lot and they always use smart techniques to get to the food (hehehe). Nice video [:

yeah border terriers are really smart. i have one too and she learned how to shake and high five in one day. it's easy to teach them how to high five once they know how to shake, mainly because you hold your hands up and they reach to touch your hand. x)

x8xlornzx8x, thanks for the comments, and enjoy your puppy!! Try to get her into a puppy kindergarten or socializing class. Borders are so smart, but all dogs need socializing as puppies! A good border puppy is a tired border puppy, so walks outside and playtime are great. Also, the best command I ever taught my dogs is "Go Potty!!" When you are housebreaking her, every time she goes, say "Go Potty" or whatever command you want, and then praise her like she just made gold bullion for you.

Thanks for the comments!! Some of the other things I have taught Abbey are "touch", where she jumps up and touches my hand, and "bow" where she puts her butt up and her head down. Also, if I hold up a card that says "SIT", Abbey will sit.

Thanks for the kind comments! Quigley, the older border, was just diagnosed with a brain tumor, he probably had it when I made this video. Borders amaze me with their ability to learn. Abbey and Quig both can roll over, play dead, they love agility and earthdog. We are going to do rally obedience with Abbey soon.

I have 2 Border terriers too. Brother and sister. They can sit,lie down,stay,roll over and paw and they learned it really quickly.Guess the breed must just be quick learners. I couldnt think of anything else to teach them lol. Gorgeous dogs BTW

Those are clever dogs. I remember trying to housebreak my border terrier puppy. It took him less than two months to train him to whine at the door to let us know he had to go outside. They are definitely easier to train than most terriers.

Your borders are so cute and the older one looks so old and wise. I have a little border terrier puppy girl, too and I am surprised how clever she is and how sneaky she is! She picks up new tricks and skills like shaking paws so quickly.
