I made some of these, too. I used small PC power supplies without fan. I have one plugged into an old amp in my room and I made some for my friends with built-in amplifiers I ripped out from old PC-speakers. You just need some resistors to reduce the signal to avoid blowing the speakers. It is one flat, portable unit and one built into an old bedside cabinet from the trash.

How to make it:
1. Buy a power supply or dig for one on your computer junk pile (embedded switch recommended)
2. Buy a CD ROM drive with volume controls, headphone jack, back/forward play/pause and eject buttons or repeat the second part in 1
3. On the motherboard plug, use a paper clip to connect the top green wire to the top black wire beside it with the other black wires
4. Duct tape the CD drive to the power supply
5. Buy some speakers or repeat the second part in 1
6. Connect the speakers
