  • I envy you.

  • Thats how its done

  • Wonder where this footage came from..wondering if it is from Here Are All The Young Men, which was released on VHS Format..I'd love a copy of that if it was watchable..have seen one from a famous torrent site (SAY NO MORE).

Anyhow fellow Joy Division fans, can you help me with this one..!!!!!

  • @bookai69 I saw it in a charity shop in Amesbury once around about 5 years ago. If you manage to get a copy be it slightly warped or whatnot get it to digital innit, vcd or usb or whatever :-D

  • Ah the "Ian Curtis Dance!"

May 18th 1980 was a tragic day in REAL originality in music...

......now we have shitty U2 and The Killers trying to be Joy Division

I think Ian is in heaven thinking, "Wow...perhaps I should have waited"

  • what pub was it likely to be have in?- the stamford arms? the navigation?

  • I wonder if anyone sat in that room realised what impact these 4 local lads would soon have...

  • Rock and Roll in its purest form..

  • Blimey, wish a band like this would play my local !

  • sehr, sehr geil !!! Danke schön ..... Ian lebt ein kleines Stück weiter R.I.P

  • Saw them in 1979, Blackburn King Georges Hall supporting Buzzcocks - I was only 14 and didn't really watch them as I was waiting for Shelley and gang...shame on me ...one of my favourite bands too..... oh well...

  • awesome my old man grew up in timperley n great to think these guys were around there at same timeish thanks for posting

  • what pub in altrincham was this filmed?

  • @chrisellin929 old market tavern

  • @chrisellin929 its bowden vale youth club not old market tavern

  • Its fantastic to think that this band playing in this pub in England spawned to one of the greatest ever rock bands wether it be Joy Division or the resurection of New order that went on to have world wide hits and played stadiums and festivals in front of thousands and created a massive fan base wordwide ! These days you have to be under Simon Cowells wing to do that. Local pubs in front of 50 people to stadiums and millions of fans all over the world now thats the X-FACTOR !

  • "in a room without window, in the corner I found truth"

    that's a great song

  • I just downloaded this mp3 at instantmp3s..com

  • Never seen this- so wonderfull that it exists. Thank you for posting.

  • Is this not Bowdon Vale Hall? Near Altrincham. Now a '7-11' type shop.

  • Amazing. This for me is just one of those songs that makes life a lot more interesting.

  • Forever and ever.......

  • Its amazing how my mum and dad met as this very pub on the same night. They would of been in that very crowd !! My dad from altrincham and my mum from sale. On this very nyt they met :O I think thats bloody cool !

  • I find that Pretty Interesting mate :)

  • Bands such as the likes of Coldplay, Travis, Stereophonics and Keane can go suck on THIS!, thanks for posting.

  • i agree with you. one of the best bands ever. Im almost 50 and have heard alot of music. I was younger than Ian Curtis when he died. This stands alone. NEVER FORGOTTEN. from he old crew.

  • RIP Ian & Tony

  • Brilliant, thanks for posting this! Reminds me so much of when I saw JD in Nov 1979, they were supporting the Buzzcocks. The best band ever, RIP Ian

  • I am so very very incredibly and deeply jealous!!!!!!!!

  • @TidesWillTurn - Thanks, since then I have got virtually all their records on vinyl. They touched a nerve live and had an unbelievable chemistry. I was tingling and shaking when they played - there were only about 100 people watching at the time and I was 2 metres from Ian. They hed to carry him off stage at the end. We didn't realise what had happened, his dancing became so intense I thought he was collapsing due to exhaustion. So sad to hear of his death just months later. RIP Ian

  • Wow! I didn't realize you witnessed all of that. That must have been surreal, and the heartbreak a few months later. I really couldn't believe it myself. Living in the U.S. It was kind of weird being the only kid in my town who listened to them, but cool at the same time, like they were my very own little band.

I read Deborah's book and it was very enlightening. And the movie was amazing!

30 years later and I'm still listening.

    Cheers!

  • @TidesWillTurn - Try listening to the Peel Sessions and Les Bains Douches sets on Youtube for the ultimate live versions. It's worth getting the CD's from Amazon, although I prefer my vinyl originals. Cheers, Paul

  • i have those and they're great.

  • Too light-hearted for my tastes.

  • dance Ian, dance!

  • Brilliant video. Thank you.

  • Control is an excellent movie, however, they could not replicate the way Ian danced. Awesome video.

  • Hooky was an amazing and underrated bassist. He made his bass sound like a lead guitar, truly amazing

  • Great video. One of the best bands! I always think how fortunate were those who attended their concert appearances...

  • Some great Curtis dancing in this clip..love it

  • wow.just.fucking.wow.

I love hearing a new variance on ANY of their songs, no matter how subtle. It always feels like there is new air to breathe. Yes, I'm rhapsodizing. Yes, I'm obsessed.

  • jees that must have been a jolly night out in a sweaty working mans club listening to proto goth doom in rainy manchester lol

  • hahahahahaha

  • with all due respect naturally

  • @ybot1983 haha!

  • It isn't in Altrincham or Bowdon assembly rooms. It was in the Bowdon Vale Club which is no longer there.

  • yep, bowdon vale youth club, a guy called Malcom Whitehead filmed it. It's in the joy division documentary called "joy division".

They interviewed Malcom Whitehead about the gig too.

  • no matter how hard I try, after hearing the drums in joy division I can't help playing the same kind of robotic/machine like beats live when i'm on drum duties, i can't help it, my other friends get pissed off about it, I seriously can't help it though.

  • steve morris IS the best drummer EVER.... peter hooks bass is so fuckin awesome!!! .... AND IAN CURTIS.....WELL IT GOES WITHOUT SAYING RELI..... XR.I.PX

  • was this bowden assembly rooms ?

  • I believe so! Altrincham area nr Manchester.

  • utterly brilliant

  • .memories like Erics liverpool in 79 he was dead 8months later.sad la, long live the Shadowdancer.much copied never bettered.New Order just headless chickens a body with no soul

  • I agree, Ian was the main man, but Steve Morris is a fantastic drummer, the rest are pure shite!

  • steve morris was an ace drummer.

  • What?

  • What?

  • harsh

hook is a great bass player

  • @door2yourheart huh? Hooky is an amazing bassisT!

  • wow. where did you find this? i've never seen it before. really brilliant. thanks. my fav band.

  • oooooooooooooooooooooooooohhhhh

    such a great video!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    My favorite JD song.

  • those dancing days

  • shes lost control-my favourite track of all time. What a bloody treat this vid is.had to come back and watch again.cheers.

  • I hope this great and influential band is remembered for another 30 years!

  • impresionante

  • Long live Alty and Joy Division!

  • Incredible!!! Thanks very much for posting that

  • This is pure gold, thank you very much for uploading it. I sure wish i could have seen them live.. oh well .. Ian Curtis, may your soul find a better place! You will be remembered!

  • this is great, thank you very much

  • this is great footage of Joy Division. they sound great, so powerful, raw energy.

  • Great to see Alty is gonna be back on the musical map soon with bands like El Policia and The Mandigans leading the light

We need more indie / alternative bands from this area though and get it back to the days where South Manchester ruled the airwaves

  • the mandigays?? really>?

  • Surgical support! That was the lads at the george street bash.

  • Can't believe they played in a pub in Altrincham..thats where im from! do you know which pub or where the pub was situated?

  • this was at a youth club in bowden vale i think its called just outside alty

  • the lighting here is so facking awesome.

  • why does no-one seem to comment on how great a drummer Morris was?

  • You've clearly never seen any of the comments on new order vids...

Thats all the majority are, just praising him and hooky and pointing out barney's flaws.

  • Thanks for your comment badfex. I'm sure you're right but I was referring to JD rather than NO.

  • Joy Division or New Order does it matter? We're still talking about Stephen Morris aren't we? With Joy Division, all people talk about is Ian Curtis and often forget that there are musicians in the band that also wrote the music which without it would only be a poem.

As for Barney, he's not technically sound, but we can't deny his creativity. He was also the one who often made the arrangements. The guy could do everything except maybe play drums. Each one of them were gifted in their own way.

  • Oh man, you're absolutely right. Pure talent... He's got the rhythm inside...

  • Was I negligent or what. Sumner has his haircut and guitar, and Hook his beard of the time. A healthy suspicion never hurt anyone though. It's an odd audio/video sync/cutoff at the end.

  • I was about 13 when this was happening and at this time and through the 1980s pubs were excellent places to see original bands learning their skills. Now they are only good for themes and gastro food. What a fucking shame. This and x factor spell the death of Britain's greatest export; innovative live music.

  • Get your ass over to Belfast mate. The live band scene is roaring. Expect great things in the next few years a la Snow Patrol and Ash. I predict the next big - no massive thing to come from Northern Ireland

  • It is when you live in Japan, ha ha (I do). The live scene is thriving here, but the quality is awful. Either screetching fake punk, soppy pop music or Beatles covers. Foreign bands come here but rarely and only after they have made it or are on their way out. The UK has great innovative bands, but they are not supported by small, affordable venues like they used to be. I envy your position. Maybe I'm out of touch?

  • Incredible, had the bootleg for years (Bowden Vale, Altrincham 1979) and in Mark Johnson's book 'Ideal For Living' he notes that there were cameras there. It's 100 per cent genuine for all the doubting pail heads. Sound board tape synced to Malcolm Whiteheads well documented footage shot on Super-8.

  • Absolutely right. I happened to re-read Mark Johnson's book about two months ago. Not a riveting read but full of great facts.

  • Alicia was Ian's wife..I doublt she would post a fake video...daft cunts

  • His wife was Deborah Curtis.

The poster is called Stefan, aged 27 if you look at his profile.

Try not to insult people when you are clearly not in possession of the facts.

  • WHAT??? His wife was Deborah Curtis...

  • this isnt the real joy division

  • mentira u are a prat a class prat if you have nothing of any value to say dont say it at all this is genuine im from the altrincham area my sister saw the band many times live i just wish uneducated people like u wood go bak to where u came from - thats a cave !

long live joy division and as we are still istening to joy division as ian curtis rip lives on

  • how could you say this isnt joy division performing? you are a complete idiot. super 8 was cheap back then and commonly used. wow you really are stupid

  • Maybe you could do some research next time before you post comments. The shadowplay footage is even used in the official Grant Gee documentary and Malcolm whitehead is interviewed about it in the documentary. A quick google search on Malcolm Whitehead and joy division would have been nice. It is funny you think Alicia created this while this is all over youtube.

  • fuck me, i was there

  • ...and was it fuck 'playback' they were a small band from manchester in 1979, playing in a youth club to a load of 17 year olds. what would they 'play it back' on

  • Really really?

    what was it like?

  • what was it like? at the time they were just another local manchester band. pretty good live. looked a bit weird and moody. of course no -one there that night would have any idea what was going to happen to the band and the legendary staus that would develop because of curtis's death. i remember someone in the audience shouting to curtis 'dont take yourself too seriously mate'. curtis proceeded to stare the bloke out for the next couple of songs

  • Compared to alot of the nonsense churned out now, from around the very area they played in this video, they were more than pretty good live.

  • Brilliant piece of musical history this footage..cheers for that!

  • Playback my fucking arse....no fuckin chance you were there pal an if ye were ye wir pished tae fuck.....in yer dreams...

  • great great , thanx for posting it

  • I love this footage it's a shame the whole gig wasn't recorded, this truly does rock!!

  • Joy Division are the sole reason I'd want to have been born before 1983. I would have so loved to have been there at the time...

Still their music lives on everyday for me and so many. RIP Ian.

  • I was there , saddly they perform from playback all show was borring.

  • is not only born before 83. (i born 70) the right place is the important. (i live in south América) and only could listen those guys from the distance.

  • Thank you so much. I was in my mid-thirties, working in Manchester city centre, and hadn't heard anything as ground-breaking since the Doors. Still fresh now. Excellent to see the bad in such an atmospheric setting.

  • cant explain how good they were, amazing, who can touch them these days? no-one.

  • This is from the Bowdon Vale Youth Club 14/03/1979 even though it says differently. Some people who posted comments were there. This is really rare bootleg footage.

  • out of the ordinary inventiveness will always be loved by us people am i right simon 1000 ,hit the nail right on the head

  • awesome!

  • ian's lost control

    wooo

    they were absolutely extraordinary

    Joy D still rulz

  • Bez with a brain

  • That is HIGHLY insulting, Joy Division were on a totaly other level to that trash.

  • not sure how you can label the mondays as trash

  • Very easily.

  • well you'd be wrong my friend. as mr wilson himself would have attested. Shaun Ryder was a lyrical genius and Bez, for all of the man's limitations, represented a time and place in a way that no one could have imagined. Their ability to sum up the hopes and fears of a generation and touch millions would never have been achieved by curtis - who was far too self centred

  • I remember 'Streets Ahead' Records on Lloyd Street, I knew the girl who worked there, and she gave me my first toke on a spliff... ahhh those were the days when drugs were very expensive, hard to find, and often didn't work. Still, it was very exciting.

I used to buy quite a bit of stuff from that shop, had a great selection..

    Memories.

  • This isn't the 'Check inn' club in Altrincham.

It was sort of disco we used to go to, with live music once in a while. It had a different stage, on the same level as the audience.

I was playing in the support band, I remember they were all dressed in black.

  • im playin the part of ian in the australian joy division show this fri night 30/5/08 at the lass o'gowrie newcastle nsw be there.......

  • That was just brilliant. One of the best videos on Youtube!! Ian Curtis had the moves, man. James Brown had nothing on him!! Thanks for posting this killer footage.

  • Love Joy Divison :)

  • Wow this is great footage...

  • Fantastic!

  • Awesome stuff. The rawness just adds to it. Is there anymore of this show anywhere??

  • dont think so... this is super rare

  • INCREDIBLE!!! I love Joy Division ...What can't band's be this good anymore?

  • This was not from Check Inn Altrincham, that was Nov 1978, I still have the ticket and poster. This was from Bowdon Social Club in Bowdon Vale in May 1979. The place is still there but alas has been turned in to a Co-Op.

The gig was organised by Bob Jefferies who was a Chiropodist from Oxford Rd in Altrincham, he also ran 'Streets Ahead' Records on Lloyd Street where Sainsburys is now. The last time I saw Ian Curtis was at The Factory on Royce Road in May 1980.

  • wow. you were really there? i was born in the same year ian died, but his songs still touch me, and hopefully the next generations.

  • the club was on the other corner its gone know iworked for bob at streets ahead his name is jefferson the hole gig was filmed they played twice on the same day under 18 1st great times

  • What an amazing video and marvelous song.

  • What were they doing playing a pub in Altrincham in 1979? They were quite big by then.

  • amazing...thanks for sharing.

  • Joy Division=Ian Curtis=Legend

  • thanks for this video, it's unbelievable.

  • well mr. deutsc2k7 I dont think you can actually judge the genius of these parts.. a crazy guitar riff doesnt mean its also good. I seriously doubt all that guitarists from the heavy metal bands that play the 5 min solos.. perfection in simplicity and inspirated music! that's what joy division was

  • I think the point you're completely missing is that they came up with the whole concept first and almost 30 years ago. it may seem obvious to you now but that's only due to the fact joy division have been such a huge and powerful influence on the music, style, stage presence, artwork and videos of such a vast amount of bands since - many of which you will know well. if it wasn't for them music would be very different now.

  • Great answer!!

  • Yeah great answer, they were ahead of their time.

    RIP Ian.

  • yes!

  • Ze spezial part iz zat dis vaz fun and zee muzic spoke of ze times. Now ze polish and ze speet iz on all ze muzic and ze muzic stinks of ze cocaine snorting silk suit men.

  • could you have written those songs over 30 yrs ago?

  • fuck moi!

    sends shivers up me gulliver.

  • fucking amazing stuff, love it

  • Genius

  • this is actually from Bowdon Vale Youth Club just outside Altrincham

  • Thank you Manchester for giving us the best ever band to walk the planet...

  • I have goosebumps!

  • I thought I'd seen every bit of footage that Joy Division had done.

    This is fantastic.

Read the book that Ian Curtis's wife wrote, excellent.

Listen to the silence let it ring on!!

  • fucking eery

    gives me goosebumps this song

    haunting

    x

  • Still mindblowing.Has there been a vocalist since as truly driven as Ian Curtis?

  • Joy Division were around when TV appearances weren't taken for granted and to see this archive footage of a real gig is absolutely fantastic. I've been a fan for 28 years and I haven't seen this footage. Thank you.

  • Yes...it was Bowdon Vale Youth Club...I was there taking stills...

  • mint

  • Simply Amazing

  • I love that little zooming in and out thing that the camera operator does - trying to add dramatic effects to what must be one of the most dramatic performers there has ever been!

  • Is this a film from "the check inn" on george street or one of the bowdon vale social club events? Brings back the memories anyway, a younger lad from school was in a band called "surgical spirits" and played support at the "check inn" gig. I got in for free as I was out with one of the pot girls, I think it cost a pound to get in.

  • Ah, from march `78, it was bowden vale. Scritti politti played there some weeks later, they were very weird on stage.

  • A mate of mine reckons this is Bowdon Vale Youth Club 14/03/1979. There's a bootleg recordings of this gig out there... if you can find them.

  • i've got a bootleg of that somewhere.

don't ask me for it though cos it's buried under a ton of other stuff.

maybe one day i'll transfer it on to cd or something.

  • Actually some of the recordings from there are in the Joy Division Box set.

  • Is this the Check inn club in Altrincham? I saw them there in 77 and I'm sure it was filmed.

    Gary

  • I'm from Taiwan, Love Joy Division Forever!!Thanks for posting that!

  • What an archive! I have shivers...

    Thanks for posting that!

  • It looks almost like he faints at the end of this!

  • Thanks You Callado

  • I'm specheless!!! This is the best video I've ever had seen!!! I can not believe yet! I'm in a dream! Thanks Alicia and youtube!

  • Fantastic archive footage! This is what youtube is fantastic for... I'm all nostalgic and homesick... Thanks Alicia for posting.
