  • Nice video! Were you back again this past weekend filming during the race? I am the co-captain of the mile 12.5 water stop and saw someone with a GoPro on their head, wearing a red shirt and cap.

I yelled out and got a glance -- hopefully that shows up in the video :-)

  • Great video!

  • I want that song on my playlist sunday!!!

  • I am definitely pumped!!!

  • Getting pumped for Sunday!

Weather forecast looks similar to 2010.

  • I like your video and had two questions before I do this at the San Francisco Marathon at the end of July. What size where the SD cards that you used and did you just use the jpeg size for each image from the HD Hero menu at 2 secs, or did you go into the settings to select a smaller sized jpeg? I hope you can answer

  • @luisysusnenes Hi! I used 32 Gig SD cards, and I used the full-size jpeg selection at 2 secs. The nice thing about using the full size is that it gave me some leeway in cropping and steadying the shots so they were not as jumpy in the final video. Actually even at full-sized jpegs, I do not think that I used more than half of the capacity of each card. I probably did not need to switch cards halfway. Good luck in your race!

  • @mikesrightbrain Thanks so much for responding and sorry for my late reply. I took your advice and now have two 32 gig SD cards. I just finished a 20 mile run and it works. I am using four batteries just in case. I am using Adobe Premier Pro and am going to keep my final video to about 14 or so minutes so it does not play as fast as yours. I will post a link when I am done.

  • Really cool!! Next run I'll try my iPhone for capturing a time lapse.

  • 5:04 woo that's my high school :D

  • Awesome, thanks for posting - brings the whole race back for me.

  • That was sweet! I've been thinking of doing the same for RTB relay in Septembe. I have the chest haness that worked well for skiiing. I'm sure it would also work for running.

I love the 2 second timer. What was your time and how long did the battery last? I read your note that you changed the battery at mile 14.... what was the time at that point?

  • @psvenssonfly Hi thanks for the comment! I changed the battery and card at about 2:10 at the halfway point for me. One bit of advice be sure to mark the cards and the batteries with a "1" and "2" or something to avoid confusion during the change. My time for the race was about 4:30, which is almost an hour more than my PR, but that's ok. FYI I tested chest harness and it didn't work nearly as well as headcam. chest harness moves left and right way too much, whereas head stays steadier.

  • Wow, the memories this video brings back! I ran that same day and I remember everything so very clearly. Just watching the video made my stomach a little sore at mile 10 where I got my my stomach cramp. I could feel my legs tighten near the end and the euphoria after crossing the finish line. Wish I could like this video more than once.

  • congrats on your run, and thanks for the great video! this is truly inspirational. I'm training for my first half-marathon in may, and one day I'd love to do the chicago marathon.

  • @rockxandxlove Thanks for the comment! good luck in your training, and I guarantee you'll get the bug and run the chicago marathon sooner than you think!

  • Hey thanks for the comment! Yes I changed the battery right at the 14 mile mark, and the sd card as well.

  • awesome video mike! did you need to change the battery at some point?

  • your video is touching. im a runner but i havent ran a full marathon yet. im just doing 5k races. but i just registered the chicago marathon for my marathon debut this year. this video is an inspiration for me. thanks!

  • @jaygax thanks for the comment! Good luck with your training... see you out there in October!

  • FYI -- GoPro has a chest mount harness which might work better for running. That way you don't have to worry about moving your head. Nice video!

  • Hey Dens-

I did exactly that; used a light running cap and then used the headstrap that came with the GoPro. I had it cinched pretty tight... it did give me a headache after about 15 miles. Perhaps try different hats? Or possibly use safety pins to hold the strap onto the hat.

  • hey mike - thinking of doing the same for NYC Marathon, but I can't get the GoPro to stay on my head! (wearing a baseball hat + the 3-way helmet strap).

    what did you use?

  • @mikesrightbrain Okay awesome! I'll give that a shot. I'm assuming you tried shooting video, realized it was pretty bouncy (which is what I did yesterday) and then switched to time lapse.

And thanks again for the inspiration to film the NYC race!

  • @dpstyles - Yep exactly. I tried doing video but it was way too shaky. This way, at least the images themselves are crystal clear. Good luck in the race!

  • Thanks and Yes- used GoPro Hero. Camera with case and strap weighed a little under a half pound I think.

  • how heavy is the camera??

  • great video. Did you use a gopro hero for this?

  • Nice work. Seeing that sun blaze down really brought back the memories. :D Wish YouTube would let me go frame-by-frame to look for my family in Chinatown since I missed them IRL.

  • Excellent! Well done, on both running and creating such a cool video.

  • So cool Mike! Love it!!!

  • Thanks for posting this. Starting temp 67 deg F, finishing temp mid-70s. I started 0:58 after the elites and D-tag time was 3:14:24. The low humidity made it not seem to be too hot for me, although I generally prefer 40s-60s.

Holding your head still is good running form, too!
