I'm 22. I wrote a guy once from new york, a poet, I suppose he never had a girlfriend, I knew in my head the other day that I had talked to someone interesting and something about a band. Then I remembered the poet I talked to that was madly in love with porcupine tree, I went on the web and looked and looked for the poor guy, no luck. Now I find Steven quite fascinating as well, but he's twice my age, but still smart and pretty, but I'm ranting sorry.
Hello everyone. For about six months ago (I think) I saw a fantastic interview with Steven Wilson where he talked about how young people experience their lives as irrelevant because they are aware of the fact that there are 6,5 billion people on Earth - therefore they find it extremely important to be famous. I have literally spent hours looking for it without succes. If anyone in here knows what interview I'm talking about PLEASE tell me - it will be very appreciated!
i'm just gettin into these guys. i got the album the sky moves sideways, its pretty good, very mellow. which album should i get next if i am a fan of progressive metal, what do you guys recommend?
I'm a huge Dream Theater fan (Well, I was... let's see how they do without Portnoy) and my favorite Porcupine Tree albums are:
1. In Absentia
2. Fear Of a Blank Planet
3. The Incident
4. Deadwing
5. Stupid Dream
Harrison's drumming is very very creative and if you are a drummer, you will want to listen to PT on a good system so that you can hear every single time he even taps against something. His timing is an art.
If you're here because you like DT or other prog metal acts, then you should check out PT's later albums, meaning In Absentia and onwards. The Incident and Fear of a Blank Planet are probably the heaviest.
However if you're here because you're a prog fan, I would recommend their older material, i.e. Lightbulb Sun and earlier. For psychedelic-ish, see Sky Moves Sideways and earlier.
If you love both (like me), anything is great! But I'd say a good place to start is Deadwing.
@RICbass78 yea i checked out deadwing and in absentia, fuckin incredible, also checked out sky moves sideways, very interesting. i definitely wanna check out fear of a blank planet because alex lifeson and robert fripp helped colaborate on it apparently. thanks man for th advice

Flame away, but this guy is not a genius, he is a fucking hack. PT is not that epic, not that amazing. Likewise, the way he treats his fans. Don't take my picture, don't even have a fan site that may list (not distribute) possible live recordings. Fuck Steve Wilson and fuck Porcupine Tree.
@talefromthepit Everyone is entitled to having his own opinion. I´ll grant you that! I don´t know Steven Wilson in person and I do not care about the fact that he might be very careful about "pirated" material. It is his right to do so, he created that music and I´m very glad to part from my money to get his recordings or buy some live footage.
I do know that he is a perfectionist and therefore could never allow some lesser quality material to be published. He IS a genius, no doubt about it!!
@InstinctualJealousy well for one he hit me with copyright violation for simply trying to review his show (yes, I had permission to take video in the venue).
@SpicyDonuts Well you know, a cute gals tongue or finger has never been an issue down there. Never taken a cock. Well, this Steve Wilson asshole fucked me. What a giant fucking douche. Oh and his band blows.
@talefromthepit You don't have to like PT. But Steven Wilson has more talent in his little finger than your entire band has combined. I'm sure PT could play simple bar chords as fast as they could and scream into the microphone like he was being butt raped by a centaur. Your shit band could never dream of making music as beautiful and sophisticated as PT. This music actually tugs on the heart.
@talefromthepit Even if I was a fat smelly bastard (like your fans) it doesn't change the fact that you are not as muciscally gifted as Steven Wilson.
@SpicyDonuts It's not about being musically gifted. It's about being good to the people who allow you to make music for a living. Steve Wilson is anything but.
@talefromthepit Well I just listen to his music I don't know who he is as a person. I'm just arguing their talent, because you of all people say they blow.
holy shit! me and steven are almost exatcly alike,we both are very passionate about music, and love to create it,and we both love to film things and are both interested in the film industry! and both are names start with an S lol,GO STEVEN!
True about the media brainwashing.......Half the world starving isnt news.....Cheryl Cole at deaths door, 'drastically underweight' by losing half a stone ( she took her extentions out ! : 0 ) ....now THATS news!
I have thought this same thing...the deaths of millions vs the death of one. We are easily manipulated by numbers and presentation.. It's nice to see someone so thoughtful and intelligent, and all of these ideas meld together and oozes from his music...so rich and complex.
Steven Wilson is a towering intellect, I would absolutely love to sit and discuss cinema with him - why isn't someone giving him money to develop his full-length film projects?
It's funny how Lady CaCa, Rhiana, Justine Timberfake, and countless others who have no talent in their useless bodies get all of this attention and recognition, while bands like Porcupine Tree get overlooked because they aren't mainstream. Great band who gets no respect from the industry.
Rush went through the same thing, and years later they got the respect and attention they deserve far too late in the game. and then EVERYONE finally loves them. well this is the way i puy it, i've asked so many people if they have heard of PT, (of corse the answer is no) so i keep them to myself, kinda like my own epic secret. :D
trust me, the people i work with have no idea who PT is. i guess that's a good thing. but believe me when i tell you, i try to spread the gospel about this group, they are just too fucking awesome. in the midst of getting their entire catalogue. especially their earlier stuff with Gavin redoing the drum parts.
I've never thought of him as pompous. If I had to describe Steven Wilson with one word, that word would be "geniune." In every interview I've heard from him, regardless of the subject matter, he comes across as genuine. I'd love to sit and talk with the guy for a couple of hours and I can say that about very few musicians I respect.
