Smart man who cares about important issues, but I never got the "no shoes" thing. In cases like this, I don't think you have to LITERALLY put yourself in someone's position to sympathize what they're going through. I'm fortunate for the things I have, and I know that. For example, I'm not gonna go days without food/water just to prove I know what it feels like. I think just knowing that you're fortunate is a good start.
