@christalmann They have been my favorite band for 40 years! Ever since I heard THEN CAME THE LAST DAYS OF MAY I have been hooked thru the gills! I STILL get goose bumps every time I hear it!
Yes @SuperAkebono, we do know. That Buck riff at 2:35 has got to be one of the most badassed ones ever played, period. I mean, every time I hear it throughout the decades it hits me harder than before. Just too damned good.
i don't think the lyrics at 3:30 could be more mysterious. whether they are meaningful or meaningless, i sit here in awe wondering what the thought process was. I can only dream of the day i can play the guitar solo at 3:50 and when i can thank Buck for writing and performing such a breath taking piece.
Playing this song on the quitar is like playing four different songs in one. Man back in the day we used to just get wasted and listen to this album over and over again
Back in the day where few bands, like BOC, wrote songs where the feel and tone of the music reflected the theme of the lyrics. BOC gave you the real deal with their songs. This is rare in the music we are force fed these days. It is funny to find new bands on late night TV like Kimmel or Conan!!!! and YouTube of course..
I bought this album (yes...vinyl) about 30 years ago and beat the crap out of it. It was on sale for like 3 bux at a used record store. Best 3 bux I ever spent. Truly the most underrated band ever. They ALL write, sing and play guitar (ME262 live). Saw them at Studebakers in Burnaby about 13 years ago. They still sound awesome live!!!
There has always been something in this band. Cant exacltly figure out what it is..they just dont seem to fit to any genre. Listened to them whole week in my car going to and back for work -and felt good. Maybe cause I had time to think my own thoughts beside audio. Cause i really couldnt figure out, i'm going to play it again next week.
PS I'm from the ö-cult land. That's maybe the best reason for me to listen this "bull shit." Eh...
Correct me if I'm wrong but this song is about a group of people gathering together to witness yet another ufo sighting in the same spot armed with cameras and wanting to be taken by them. I heard this song once on the local rock station in 1979 and loved it. Never heard it again on the radio after that but i picked up the album so it didnt matter.
Why is BOC so underappreciated by today's generation? And the legends at tht: Hendrix, Who, Clapton...Music has been consumed by pop and alternative...they lack creative spirit.
As monolithically perfect as this song is, I can't help but feel the Devil's Hangnail demo is even better; not only for the level of complexity later toned down for the album, but really how can you live up to Patti Smith's lyrics about God's dick?
i cannot believe it, i musta seen these guys a dozen times in the last 30 years and they never once played this! best track on the album. come to us.....
I'd forgotten how great this song is. Thanks for posting it, Luffy. This song has all the elements of their big hits - melodic guitar, Buck's vocals, and the quick, repeating riff (at the 4:00 minute mark) - much like (Don't Fear) The Reaper and Burnin' for You. Love the lead guitar work - some of Buck's best. The phophetic line "We bit off more than we can chew" was written long before climate change became the doomsday issue of the 2000s. BOC rocks!
You can say that again. I would place this dam near Boston's 1st. Nearly every cut is good and some unbelievable guitar work. I just came from another song, talking about its solo and this one. Then I looked this up to see if it was even here. Of course, it was. Most popular cult song as far as I can tell.
This album is a masterpiece of rock music. Derided in England by dim-witted reviewers as ' over produced' it is as all rock music is, a product of technology, but with musical feeling showing through, glowingly.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Every B.O.C. song is about getting laid actually, for those that didn't know. They just put a bunch of sci-fi, occult, and horror stuff to mask the true meanings
Love the Bolero-like electric guitar work... --Worthy of being a soft rock song by a hard rock group played on soft rock radio, until you get to the meaty, crunchy hard rock stuff...! And is the one of the first songs they made featuring an acoustic guitar? (besides "In Thee"?)
One of the coolest, catchiest distorted rhythm guitar riffs ever. There are so many great contrasting musical ideas in this song...i play this song for people I know don't know it, and they always get hooked. An overlooked, lost gem...but the BOC fans, we all know, don't we?
@SuperAkebono I just saw BOC last night in Ridgefield CT at the Ridgefield Playhouse and they played this one LIVE. It was Great! Overall show as good, but Eric Bloom was sick and not there, so the show was a bit less than usual. Still rockin' the crowd however.
The main guitar riff has got to be one of the coolest of all the riffs out there. Its a wonder this song hasn't gotten more airplay. One of my favorite songs from BOC and Buck D. Thx for posting this.
Jenga---Most Cultists will say there are no bad "albums", BUT when this was released, it along w/ "Agents" & "Spectres" was thought to be somewhat of a pop sellout to the early fans. If you listen to any of the first 4 releases, IMO, there really are no comparisons in musical direction. Sonic-madness could describe most of the material from the first 4 releases, 1 of those being a live release. If not in your collection, I highly recommend BOC, T&M, & Secret Treaties.
I saw this tour at UCLA/Pauley Pavillion in 1979. It was festival seating (no reserve seats) so we got in line 6 hours early. In our haste we dropped our cooler and broke our beer bottles, but we still had our weed.
Buck played the Explorer on this tour, which it's input jack gave him problems that night, so the guitar tech brough him out a Les Paul.
That gtr was the Giuliano Valestra "Vulcan" - I've seen him use it now and again. Was the LP the black one or the brown sunburst one? (just curious). Buck uses Steinbergers now.
The red sunburst would be Allen's guitar; not the first time I've seen or heard of Buck using it. Buck has a 1972 LP Deluxe brown sunburst - an awesome sounding instrument. Buck also had two Guiliano Valestra "Vulcans" made for him as custom jobs (not 100% sure if it is the luthier you are referring to) - he gave one away and kept the other only to have it stolen and later recovered. First time I saw this one (1980) I thought it was a Dean, but I was wrong.
That's cool, slant . I used to have a huge poster of the Cult on my wall, the guitar Buck had in that stage shot was the one in the Burnin' For You video - it looked like a Gibson Flying V with an additional lower fin , sort of made it look like an Explorer aswell. I've worked in guitar shops on and off for years but never seen one in the Gibson brochures. I suppose it must have been a custom job. M, London, U.K.
stood in line for general admission to the show at cumberland county convention center in N.C. the dead of winter for hours, and my beard froze! in the middle of the show, during cities on flame, i saw a female cop beat the living shit out of some redneck for hittin some little doll in the audience. they brought the girl onstage and she danced for two or three songs.
boc headlined, and were preceded by rush and reo speedwagon.
Buck's solos in this song alone rise above the entire catalogue of most other guitarists works...I used to feel Hendrix was my favorite but Donald Buck Dharma is my all time personal if I had to choose just one.
A riff like that could crush even the most extreme metal bands. As per usual though, BOC keep it classy and understated... they know they've got nothing to prove.
My #1 all time favorite BOC songs, the guitar is so spiritual in some parts and so hardcore in others, the mirrors album is the perfect album to blast up in your mustang convertable on one of those warm, summer nights. of corse this song is about U.F.Os, and they are one of the only artists who can sing about U.F.Os and make sense, My 2nd fav BOC song is Dr. Music. such an influence to my music!
Sloppy drummer? - lol This guy is one of the all time greats. His style is totally unique. When they lost Albert Bouchard, boc changed forever. They were awesome however.
But i guess you'd have to have a brain bigger than a speck of fly shit to realize that. 8D
I agree. I pretty much like almost everything they've done, but I think their music is just too intelligent for most people to enjoy or appreciate, which is why they aren't topping the lists they make.
BOC is #1 on my list. My girlfriend also likes everything i've shown her they did, and she'd only ever heard 2 songs they did before she met me. That's how most people are, they just know "Don't Fear the Reaper", but I think they have better songs, although that one is good. They got better.
Yeah I sort of phrased that wrong. I didn't mean to say that I actually think Buckethead "got" Big Sur Moon from this. He may have never even heard this album, but the little bit of similarity in the guitar there is interesting.
Buckethead and kiss my... you know what. THIS has by far one of the best guitar solos in i've heard. It's not just good string work, it's how the music effects you, and this music sings to my soul.
"mirrors" is the closest b.o.c. got to the eagles :-)...i like "dr. music" and "moon crazy" best. best album in my opinion: "some enchanted evening"--it very much sums up their live-qualities. best studioalbums: "fire of..." and "cultosaurus.."
yeah, good record, this is only band with a sloppy drummer that works!!! THESE GUYS WERE BEYOND HEAVY METAL FOR A WHILE. GREAT HARMONIES. BOURCHARD BROTHERS ARE COOL.
The opening solo of this song kicks ass... and the rest is kinda forgettable. Oh well. BoC rules anyway. Wish they'd kept that tone from the first forty-five seconds for the whole tune.
Sure it does, thats called TALENT,REAL TALENT! but what are they singing about? eh? This is ONE of the MOST IMPORTANT SONGS of our TIME,written and played to and thruout the WORLD 33 years before the END! Too bad this video cant be cranked up some more decibells! Like UTUBE, they were getting the word out and getting paid to do so. sweet gig if you can get it. Blends perfectly into I AM THE STORM!
boycott the rock and roll hall of shame. they are crap. they are the rock and roll hall of fake. do not support them or the lame agenda they are promoting... it ain't rock and roll they care about, it's socialism and liberalism. left wing looney non sense has nothing to do with great rock music and the great musicians that made it. period.
the rock and roll hall of fame is shit, when they put madonna over b.o.c. you know something "liberalism" fishy is up... f*ck them. BLUE OYSTER CULT still kick ass and madonna is STILL NOT ROCK 'N ROLL! period. who cares what those douche bags think. f*ck 'em. ROCK AND ROLL IS KING!!!
Look at it this way....all you people on here who get a feeling from blue oyster cult music like you dont from any other and youve worn all your albums, cassettes, and cds into dust from playing them over and over and over and over and over and over well........you know something the general public doesnt!!!!
What you've said sums it up precisely. Blue Oyster Cult is something you either get (and LOVE) or don't. As long as these songs are on youtube, hopefully some lucky souls who've never heard them will realize what they've been missing.
To those lucky souls: The cult's been waiting for you. ;)
Me, me, I am one of those lucky souls! I listened to B.O.C for the first time today and am totally taken by this music. A M A Z I N G stuff, will be sure to add this band's name to my shop list of cd's to get... I've known about this band for some twenty years, yet never heard them, what a crime, lol.
Fire of Unknown Origin is the album I'd pick if I could only keep one CD for the rest of my life. I should probably have a copy of it buried with me, haha.
Really, the sound quality is crap. It needs a remaster..and even then the sound is a bit dated with the heavy keyboards. Good album though...Mirrors is better..
blue oyster cult makes me live in a steven king movie from the 70s. if anyone else can relate to that your rad.

Gee... I think it was a red suburst... can't recall exactly. It WASN'T black though.
The "Vulcan" must be from Guliano's rare Guitars in NYC?
krsongs 2 years ago
The red sunburst would be Allen's guitar; not the first time I've seen or heard of Buck using it. Buck has a 1972 LP Deluxe brown sunburst - an awesome sounding instrument. Buck also had two Guiliano Valestra "Vulcans" made for him as custom jobs (not 100% sure if it is the luthier you are referring to) - he gave one away and kept the other only to have it stolen and later recovered. First time I saw this one (1980) I thought it was a Dean, but I was wrong.
slant40 2 years ago
That's cool, slant . I used to have a huge poster of the Cult on my wall, the guitar Buck had in that stage shot was the one in the Burnin' For You video - it looked like a Gibson Flying V with an additional lower fin , sort of made it look like an Explorer aswell. I've worked in guitar shops on and off for years but never seen one in the Gibson brochures. I suppose it must have been a custom job. M, London, U.K.

okay , heres my story of the same tour.
stood in line for general admission to the show at cumberland county convention center in N.C. the dead of winter for hours, and my beard froze! in the middle of the show, during cities on flame, i saw a female cop beat the living shit out of some redneck for hittin some little doll in the audience. they brought the girl onstage and she danced for two or three songs.
boc headlined, and were preceded by rush and reo speedwagon.
tickets were 8 bucks.
edslides 2 years ago 15
@edslides Holy snap! Blue Oyster Cult and Rush and even Reo Speedwagon were playing at the same place, when was this??
Bojoe777NaBl 2 years ago
@edslides Holy shit I am so jealous, Rush and BÖC are my two favorite bands, and REO is pretty cool too.

so awesome i dont even know what to say younger people like me are stupid to these great musicians and songwriters eric bloom is a baaaaaad dude!

Buck's solos in this song alone rise above the entire catalogue of most other guitarists works...I used to feel Hendrix was my favorite but Donald Buck Dharma is my all time personal if I had to choose just one.
dapoetmaster 2 years ago 7
He's the chosen one alright, the ace from space , Dr. Music in the flesh.
robj200735 2 years ago
A riff like that could crush even the most extreme metal bands. As per usual though, BOC keep it classy and understated... they know they've got nothing to prove.

@JohnnyFox86 damn straight brother!
Bojoe777NaBl 1 year ago
@JohnnyFox86 They just play the music and tell the tale. That's the beauty of BOC.

Eerie, eerie otherworldly guitar parts in this choice track.

Sloppy drummer? - lol This guy is one of the all time greats. His style is totally unique. When they lost Albert Bouchard, boc changed forever. They were awesome however.
But i guess you'd have to have a brain bigger than a speck of fly shit to realize that. 8D
Pist0npants 3 years ago 3

I like this music. I had this on LP, cassette, and now CD. B.O.C. rules. I
could smoke a joint and listen to this
kind of music forever.

This is awesome, and it appears Buckethead got "Big Sur Moon:" from this. 3:50 or so.
exquisiteoaf 3 years ago
I don't think buckethead got Big Sur Moon from this song...
Solo's are great! The singing part is less ;)

markguitar132 3 years ago 2
It sounds little bit same but when you think.. it doesnt.
kirbyhh 3 years ago
Yeah I sort of phrased that wrong. I didn't mean to say that I actually think Buckethead "got" Big Sur Moon from this. He may have never even heard this album, but the little bit of similarity in the guitar there is interesting.
exquisiteoaf 3 years ago
Buckethead and kiss my... you know what. THIS has by far one of the best guitar solos in i've heard. It's not just good string work, it's how the music effects you, and this music sings to my soul.
nate556 3 years ago
"mirrors" is the closest b.o.c. got to the eagles :-)...i like "dr. music" and "moon crazy" best. best album in my opinion: "some enchanted evening"--it very much sums up their live-qualities. best studioalbums: "fire of..." and "cultosaurus.."

The opening solo of this song kicks ass... and the rest is kinda forgettable. Oh well. BoC rules anyway. Wish they'd kept that tone from the first forty-five seconds for the whole tune.
ruphia 3 years ago
You know what, forget that, I don't know what I'm talking about. This song is okay. I didn't give it enough of a chance.
ruphia 3 years ago 2
Sure it does, thats called TALENT,REAL TALENT! but what are they singing about? eh? This is ONE of the MOST IMPORTANT SONGS of our TIME,written and played to and thruout the WORLD 33 years before the END! Too bad this video cant be cranked up some more decibells! Like UTUBE, they were getting the word out and getting paid to do so. sweet gig if you can get it. Blends perfectly into I AM THE STORM!

boycott the rock and roll hall of shame. they are crap. they are the rock and roll hall of fake. do not support them or the lame agenda they are promoting... it ain't rock and roll they care about, it's socialism and liberalism. left wing looney non sense has nothing to do with great rock music and the great musicians that made it. period.

the rock and roll hall of fame is shit, when they put madonna over b.o.c. you know something "liberalism" fishy is up... f*ck them. BLUE OYSTER CULT still kick ass and madonna is STILL NOT ROCK 'N ROLL! period. who cares what those douche bags think. f*ck 'em. ROCK AND ROLL IS KING!!!
edwardprzydzial 3 years ago 4
The Rock and Roll hall of fame is a joke if they don't let B.O.C. in. I liked Agents of fortune the best.

I go Spectres at one. Agents at about seven.
clubninjarock 3 years ago
Look at it this way....all you people on here who get a feeling from blue oyster cult music like you dont from any other and youve worn all your albums, cassettes, and cds into dust from playing them over and over and over and over and over and over well........you know something the general public doesnt!!!!
B.O.C. is not meant for mainstream!
This music is for the enlightened !!!
You get it or you dont!
If you do thats all I gotta say...
jonpaul61 3 years ago 7
What you've said sums it up precisely. Blue Oyster Cult is something you either get (and LOVE) or don't. As long as these songs are on youtube, hopefully some lucky souls who've never heard them will realize what they've been missing.
To those lucky souls: The cult's been waiting for you. ;)
jedirina1026 3 years ago 3
Me, me, I am one of those lucky souls! I listened to B.O.C for the first time today and am totally taken by this music. A M A Z I N G stuff, will be sure to add this band's name to my shop list of cd's to get... I've known about this band for some twenty years, yet never heard them, what a crime, lol.

Fire of Unknown Origin is the album I'd pick if I could only keep one CD for the rest of my life. I should probably have a copy of it buried with me, haha.
jedirina1026 3 years ago
Really, the sound quality is crap. It needs a remaster..and even then the sound is a bit dated with the heavy keyboards. Good album though...Mirrors is better..
clubninjarock 3 years ago
I agree . The record company wanted some top 40 action and they brought in Tom Werman to produce this LP. Way too much treble on all of the tracks..
