@TwistedSpeech I have seen Motorhead outdoors! Unfortunately they were the opening act and plagued with poor sound. Dinosaur Jr is up there with the loudest, and oddly enough Excel, that Venice Beach HC band ...had my ears ringing for days after a show in Reseda...
@thejacksaints I've seen the melvins and motorhead many times. and they were loud. but the three loudest shows I've ever seen were the Bad Brains at the elite club, Husker Du at the I Beam, and the Clash at the warfield in 1980. the Clash were so loud they actually made me permanently partially deaf in one ear. it's nice seeing some decent footage of Lori. thanks for posting this.
Agreed about the volume. They were hands-down the LOUDEST fucking band in small venues ever. The did not care where they were playing, they turned that shit UP. Such a great fucking band.
@manhuntruler2 : Honestly? The reason they didn't break worldwide is probably because they (although they were from Montesano WA, 5 miles from Aberdeen), moved to San Francisco when "grunge" was breaking in Seattle. It is not fair, because they are much better than Nirvana or AIC. Melvins are what got Kurt interested in playing music; he lived in Montesano for half of his teen years. But, despite the fact that Dale contributed several tracks to "Incesticide", Melvins were in the wrong place.
@MadCatRiley I don't know but I could never really hear their bass live till mark got in the band and that was mainly because he'd hit a lot of high notes...
@MadCatRiley : That's Lori Black, Shirley Temple's grand daughter. Hank Williams III also played for them. I think it's hard to hear the bass here, but probably because of the microphone.
@ClassicColtCabana yeah college shows are weird, especially back then...they always paid great though, so the Melvins might have picked up $300-$400 bucks for that afternoon gig! At those things you always gotta figure most people won't get it and won't like it. There were TONS of Melvins fans at this though, and at one point I had 3 or 4 different camera angles from all the people who were filming that day.
I like the random people walking by not even realizing they are within farting distance of the band that spawned the obscenely popular "grudge movement" doing one of their best early songs.
wow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have only seen the Melvins once and it was 93 at the Reading festival in England. The same line-up as this clip. It had been raining and the field had turned to mud. But it was fucking great. The Jesus Lizard played after...oh the memories. Great vid despite the sound quality. Bullhead has always been my fave Melvins cd too
Would anybody mind posting "Joan of Arc", "Set Me Straight", and "Eye Flys" from this show?? I tried downloading the torrent and would've uploaded the clips myself, but my computer is shit..............
Lori was awesome; it's a damn shame she retired from music after getting fired from Melvins. And to answer dude back there, that does look like Mike Patton in the audience. Hmm...
@Gorpisnorb Yes. Wiki: Lori Black (born April 9, 1954), also known as Lorax, is an American musician born in Santa Monica, California. She is the daughter of Shirley Temple[1] and Charles Alden Black. She played bass guitar for Clown Alley[1] and for the Melvins.
@enginear Ha!! I didn't know you way back then of course, but I knew Buzz and Dale from going to like every show they played in Southern California and interviewing them a few times. Our old stoner rock band from Palm Springs played with them not too long after this when they got Mark in the band.

anyone knows how he makes that super high pitched sound with his guitar?
Rankmoistmeat 9 months ago
@Rankmoistmeat I'ts simple feedback. Turn the amp up loud, distort, put the guitar close to the amp, and it will squeal like a pig.
Osthropek 9 months ago
@Osthropek ok so basically he's just not touching any strings which creates feedback, because of the volume and distortion....
Rankmoistmeat 9 months ago
@Rankmoistmeat right. also note he's doing an upward movement as the feedback starts, which changes the pitch of it
Osthropek 9 months ago
@Osthropek o ya! Must be kinda hard to do it right each time no?
anyways, thanks for the info.

To me The Melvins asound like Metal Punk with a Grunge sound (not as "cheery" high pitched as regular metal.)
