batman had a legitimate ticking time bomb scenario to deal with so he made a tough call. bush only made it seem that way to incite fear, then along with his administration made a misguided foreign policy decision based on bad intel. hey, that also reminds me of our current president! so bush = obama = not batman
Batman=caught the Joker who was terrorizing the city.
Bush=didn't catch Osama who had been terrorizing the country.
Comparison fails.
History will never vindicate Bush because he did not make the country safer or better off in the long run. Period. Armchair commandos like Klavan can whine about how the liberal media gave Bush a bad shake, but the end fact is his presidency was not a success. End of story.
He will someday be seen as the hero he is. I thank god all the time that a brave man started this war.... lesser men like our current president would have never even considered it.
Thank you bush.... you will always be my president.
Batman fought his own battles. Bush had others fight his battles for him.
Batman protected the citizens of his city. Bush protected the citizens of another continent in a different hemisphere.
Batman finished the job. Bush did not.
MOST IMPORTANTLY in that movie 1 person was dying a day in Gotham b/c of Batman. In Iraq 96k dead confirmed civilians; we've been there almost 7 years that's 2555 days thats 37 people a day; oh and 2 million refugees in Iraq 0 in Gotham.
Actually, they meant to make a simplistic analysis of the movie; obviously, not every nuance of the plot directly correlates to Pres Bush. I would disagree with the assertion that Batman compromised his principles, considering since his alter ego's inception was based on a vigilante persona, which doesn't rely on cut and dry principles to begin with.
That's a very simplistic analysis of the Dark Knight. When Batman pushed the use of that unethical surveillance technology, his counsel, Lucius Fox, threatened to leave his cause. Joker's only real goal was to get Batman to compromise his principles, and, in a way, he succeeded. Of course he failed to get Batman to violate his one sacred rule of not taking a life. So the message is not as cut and dry as these two doofuses are making it out to be.

We can bring peace to the middle east, it just takes time.

Bush was a C student who in 2004 ran against the intellectual John Kerry, a D student. Wow! Bush had higher approval rating than a Democrat congress. Yes, low approval rating. He knows people will see him as bad and he still does what he does. The approval rating is the same as batman's after the joker and Harvey incidents. As for thumbs instead of countering topics... I got thumbs down when I said you didn't counter a topic (and at the time, you really didn't).
Your country has a crisis that isn't coming close to the 1920s. There was a crisis in the 1980s also. Why don't you compare it to that? I understand what you say about the constitution. People are pissed at Bush for spying on people at a time of crisis. PISSED AT HIM FOR SPYING ON PEOPLE AT A TIME OF CRISIS. Reminds you of anyone? Any actor who has a name rhyming with Morgan Greeman?
You assume Bush's motives. You do not know the man. Batman tries to help people against villains. Bush protected America for 7 years since 9/11. The number of Americans killed from 9/12 to jan 20 from terror in the US is 2 people in LAX.
Bush has an economic vision you disagree with. Maybe you and him are just good people who disagree with one another? People can be moral, smart, and disagree with you.
Hello, xam. I read your response to my question. Thanks for answering.
The main problem debating is that we can't even agree on what the reality is. You believe Bush acted of selfish motives. I do not. If I'm wrong and you're right, then you make a powerful case. You feel toward Bush the same as many in Gotham feel toward Batman. He brought the Joker on them. He got Harvey killed, etc. Gotham thinks batman is the villain. You think Bush is a villain.
Wanna actually comment with substance? You think what Klavan is saying is BS. Okay. Now tell me why. What did he say that wasn't true? He talked about the joker being called a terrorist. Bush didn't protect anything. The war against terrorism came to nothing. They're spending billions of tax money to send troops overseas and achieve virtually nothing.
On the other hand, US citizens are suffering from lack of public facilities because Bush is spending all the money on war. Why did America revote him as the president? Are every single one of your brain cells high?
but the joker was always right. and that scean with the boats, IN RL THE GUY WOULD HAVE TURNED THE KEY (and im sure would have acctualy blow up their boat or even both). so is the movie telling us their right? see all of this is bs to get kids wanting to vote for republican. ITS NEVER GONNA HAPPEN
I don't agree with you about the guy (I presume you mean the convict?) blowing the other boat.I think what Christopher Nolan is showing everyone is that preconceptions about people are dangerous and wrought with repercussions. Concerning the man in the suit who shuns away from turning the key on the other boat,I think that's to show that those who shout first and loudest about an act (he was first to call for turning the key) are invariably the least likely to commit if the decision came to them
The argument still stands. The whole point is that we seem to think people in a certain position will act in a certain way. The fact of the matter is -one displayed correctly in the movie- that we can never know what they will do unless we are in the same position.
Bush has the lowest approval ratings of all-time, Republicans lost both houses of Congress 2 years ago and McCain's about to have his ass handed to him. So what do they do? They latch onto the popularity of a movie? I love how they point out that fictional movies convey conservative principles. Uh...that's because fiction often operates in terms of black of white, good vs. evil. The real world doesn't work that way assholes! And these children want to run the country.
The Republican base remains unethusiastic about McCain, so count on low Republican turn out on election day. Also, the polls you refer to are called in on land lines. Young people, who'll show up in mass numbers for Obama, carry cell phones...i.e. they're not being polled. Yet Obama's STILL ahead. P.S. The percent sign goes AFTER the number.
Obama is ahead in the polls because 80% of the polls take place in certain areas that have a liberal base. And even if it was every person who was being counted, then the republicans would have a higher electoral vote with such a small gap. THink of it this way, Georgia gives 18 electoral votes, and texas gives a large amount, and the areas of Arkansas, Lousiana, Alabama and Mississippi gives 40-50 electoral votes. You still have the mid-west, and I think McCain has Florida.
Considering he is witht he generation of Baby boomers, he has more people who approve of him number wise than the average. I think Johnson had the smallest percent of all time.
And this is CNN not FOX. CNN isn't even pro-McCain, why would they use pro-McCain ammunition?
Please tell me whether or not Osama is evil. If he is, then America is good and it's good vs. Evil. Please tell me hoe the bible isn't good vs. evil

The key thing to note about the Rendition and torture are that they produce catastrophic results for everyone. The Russian calls in the Joker after Lau's arrest. The torture of Maroni by Batman doesn't produce anything, the police officer gets more than he bargained for with The Joker and in the case of Batman, the Joker gives him inaccurate info. Concerning wiretapping, Batman doesn't eavesdrop on everyone, they use it to track the Joker's voice only, using it wisely.
No. I said that the results are catastrophic, not that it doesn't produce information. As i initimated, the info it produces anyway is inaccurate. Maroni doesn't give anything useful to Batman, the Joker gets the better of the cop who tries to torture him and before that, The Joker gives MISLEADING information to Batman, hence torture is useless. The point isn't "torture does/doesn't work" It's that they can be likely to produce catastrophic results.
With regards to Wiretapping, the issue is a little bit more subtle than that. Just because one has/knows something isn't the real issue, it's what you do with it that's important. As i alluded to before, it's FOX who has the power to use it wisely.
"So you can trust a masked vigilante who thinks he's a bat to use things wisely?" Irrelevant. You are now taking the view of a Gotham citizen, the whole process of understanding the roles, themes and characters are to be done OUTSIDE the movie.
And outside and inside the movie, he is still a mask vigilante who think he's a bat.
Outside the movie, we have insight on the true intent of batman. In the real world we have no such insight aside from a few who believe in conspiracies.
But dude, it's just a movie. We are just making comparisons where one instance seems to be acceptable to the audience and the other does not.
Of course it's just a movie. But we are able to draw comment on themes, characters and on the narrative and see what it would be like in our world. If we can't do that, then movies to a large extent become redundant. To give the best possible insight and explanation it is necessary we do this outside the movie, thats why i wasn't sure about your take on Bats. As spectators we know that his acts are wholly virtuous -so "a mask vigilante who think he's a bat" becomes irrelevant.
Glenn Beck is an idiot. We hate Bush because he IS the terrorist! He scares us with the media and invades other countries without thought. Rendition= Bush and Batman
Wiretapping= Bush and Batman
Being unpopular for himself knowing the right thing to do = Bush and Batman
Being hero people need but not necessarily want= Bush and Batman
Now last 2 are reaches and only Bush knows but there is a good comparison.
Obama that seems more like two-face or Joker giving great speeches but wreaking havoc.
