@teethonthekerb hmmm, you can't really compare the two - the N900 is 9 months older than the iPhone 4 - that's an eternity in terms of mobile phone tech.
Second, I was using a T-Mo SIM provisioned for the Android/G1/new unlimited data plan (at a time when when T-Mo still had different data plans for phones vs. Android/G1 vs. Blackberry).
Because of the age of the SIM, the APN returned by the SIM when queried by the N900 was wap voicestream com (generic phone/old data plan) instead of epc tmobile com (Android/G1/new data plan).
So the N900 used the wrong APN when trying to connect.
With regards to the provisioning. I work for WIND Mobile in Canada. I activate nearly 30 cell phones a day. There is no specific provisioning for particular types of phones other then blackberries.
About the APN... I'm pretty sure that what i said...
@driftnut56 Furthermore, when the G1 came out I purchased one, and I switched plans with T-Mo from the old to the new data plan, but kept my SIM.
SIMs can contain info such as APNs that some unlocked phones (like the N900) use to setup data.
In my video the N900 review unit setup data using the APN for T-Mo's old data plan (info from the SIM) even though my account is provisioned for the new data plan.
As a result it was unable to connect to the Internet without me manually changing the APN.
you will have to pay internet if you use mobile internet (3G and so on) but not if you use wifi (which someone will be paying for) so in the end you either pay for 3G or your wireless Broadband connection
Yes, your mobile phone provider won't know which device you own, all they see is the data you transfer, so you should see which plan you are on and what it will cost.
If you buy a new N900, chances are you can get it with a decent subsciption with some provider that includes a good data deal. On my plan for example, they let me use unlimited data at the max of $1,30 a day. The first 200MB are at full speed, after this limit, they're supposed to drop my speed, but they don't seem to do that.
Nice review dude. I noticed the batter was about to die. Do you think that could affect the performance of the flash player or maybe it was your wi-fi connection (or did you use t-mobile connection)?
Until the N900 (which, obviously is the subject of this video), the only other phone from Nokia that featured initial auto-focus during video recording (the ability to set the focus distance ahead of time) was the N93, which I don't have...
Without initial auto-focus, using any of the other Nokia phones I currently have (N86, N97) would have resulted in a blurry video. The only other phone I have with initial auto-focus is the iPhone 3GS, so that's what I used!
Yea im dying to know and is there ny alternatives to beef up battery life wivout compromising on size of the overall unit? 1250mah to say.. 1500mah 20 % increase =]
ok..i only said the OS cuz i don't know anything about the n900's hardware specs..but i've seen how symbian s60 v5 and maemo 5 works so i can say maemo 5 is better when u compare those 2..
so how do you feel about handling this N900 on landscape mode most of the time? Because there is sometimes when you only have available one hand. and the portrait mode on this phone is only possible in a few applications, could u answer that for me? Thanx
Hehehe, browsing history uses thumbnails of each page with the current page naturally being the one showing when you bring it up. You need to scroll left to see older pages. (I think)
Its actually super intuitive but not immediately obvious when you are used to desktop browsers doing it the lame old fashioned way. :-p

Why did he say it was provisioned for the G1? The only phone that requires a specific kind of provisioning is the Blackberry...
I think his APN settings were wrong or not there is all.

@driftnut56 I never suggested that there is specific provisioning for particular types of phones on T-Mo either, other than BB (and Sidekick/Hiptop).
But when T-Mo switched over from their old to their new data plans (which arrived with the G1 launch), they also switched their APN.
This new data plan is commonly referred to as the G1/Android plan even though it applies to almost all phones.

It's unlocked, so yes. It supports 2G worldwide, but 3G only in Europe/Asia and on T-Mobile in the US (no 3G on AT&T in the US or Rogers in Canada).

I don't mind at all. Of course, it would be nice for the software to eventually support portrait (beyond the phone application).

Vimeo is too heavy for the Arm processor, until Adobe flash player 10.1 comes out. Youtube videos play pretty well on the N900.
