  • Thanks for the test videos. Also sitting on the fence about switching over to this setup vs. staying with LTTO. Currently I only have 8 LTTO guns, and have a hard enough time finding people to fill those guns. What are your impressions of the guns now that they've been out for a good while?

  • @zolrac01 I wouldn't buy a new arsenal if you already have LTTO and like it. The limited Ubiconnect range in Battletag disappoints players who are used to going wherever they want with LTTO.

  • I've had this set for about a month and agree with the range - this is the biggest limiter. Otherwise it is a great system. We just have to play in a small-ish area. The addition of the vest, along with ammo, health and base boxes (respawn) makes this much more fun than LTTO, in my opinion.

  • When you first get the gear, you have to update the software on them. Trick is to only upgrade 4 at a time. I made the mistake of trying to upgrade all 12 of the new ones and 2 hours later it still wasn't done. So I did them in groups of 4 and all 12 were done within about 35 mins. Once you get past this, the hosting is lightning fast.

  • So, what did you guys think? Worth the money? Will it usurp the throne of LTTO? I've got a DX9s hosting station coming, so I'm not jumping ship just yet, especially at that price.

Once we figured out the connection issues and display the gear seemed quite promising. Battle Tag has two major advantages over LTTO:

    -Well designed vest sensors

-Accessories: Medic boxes, Respawn zones, Ammo boxes

    And two major disadvantages

-Limited to 8 players (At least that we could figure out)

-Limited connection range (reliable to about a 300 ft radius)

My verdict is that Battle Tag is worth the price for small groups, but does not overthrow LTTO for large games.

  • @mattbeachly From what I've read, the Ubiconnect can be daisy-chained to provide up to 40 players (5 Ubiconnects x 8 players each). I wonder if that would increase the reliability of the range?

Do the guns have sensors, or can a player hide their body/vest behind cover and shoot blindly at other players wile being protected? One of the few things I've always hated is when a player can shoot at others without being vulnerable.

  • I couldn't tell how much you cut out of the game set up process, but I would imagine that the wireless/non-IR nature of the system means that the hosting/joining process is a bit smoother and faster than when you've got 8-24 LTTO players all trying to join into a hosted game. That's the only thing that still bugs me about LTTO.

  • @GregGaub

redbyrd64 hosted but from what I saw there was a complicated setup process before the first game but hosting the later games was quick. We tried using two Ubiconnects on one laptop and logged in 12 players but the game crashed. Perhaps a separate computer is needed for each Ubiconnect to get 40 players.

There is not a sensor on the guns so cheating could definitely be a problem.

  • For a set of 4 guns, the first time you run the software it takes about an hour to download and update the software and then update the firmware on the guns. Learned the hard way though that you don't want to try and update more than 4 guns at a time. We had 1 gun that kept hanging things up on the reprogram. Once you get past that though, hosting is almost instantanious - way faster than LTTO in that respect.

  • To answer the question if this gear will replace LTTO - NO. For a small field, Battle Tag is great, and though many of the features will make some clubs switch over, its lack of range and inability for the guns to run without the hosting radio signal makes it useless for large scale games like the ones we play at Tagfest, or up at the Fort Battles. I like the gear - but it will not replace our use of LTTO/LTX/Steradian gear.
