Got one a few weeks ago. Got a question. I´ve bought a secondhand sh-201. I can only load the patches from the sh-201 librarian and editor. I can´t get sounds out of my synth without using the librarian or editor and I don´t want it to be stuck on my computer! can someone give a detailed instruction?

True, most of the sounds being used sound like ones I've heard from VST presets before. I looked it up though because there's an amazing band called Abandon All Ships! that uses this synth.

Just an example, Madonna and Milk Inc. use this "kids" synth. Besides, this is NOT a $ 3000 synth and nobody claimed it was the best out there.But for $ 500,what are you expecting ? A Prophet or Virus ?
djomercohen, I can say from my unfortunate experience that this synth is a huge piece of shit and downloading a vst would be better than buying the sh 201. Now I'm stuck w/ the god damn thing cuz I was the last person to realize that it is the worst synth ever built.
good luck by getting a normal synth, if you cant afford it than buy something from display at the store, you can get it for half price and in good condition in most cases...

And the arpeggiator, well, believe it or not the SH has better arpeggs than many other comparable synths.Besides, you can make ur own using the software that comes with it,something other similarily priced synths cant do.

Second, people always knock the SH for no damn reason other than being a Roland SH. It's like only Korg can make synths. Maybe if the MK was like $ 100 brand new it would've been worth it. Though i think other people have already said this. Almost all keyboard are made of plastic, synths and otherwise. Saw a Yamaha with wooden keys or something, it was weird. Being an amateur with synthesizers can actually make you not understand 1/4 of the true potential of it and cast it aside as junk. They're tricky instruments. It's like saying your first guitar is boring 'cause you can't shred on it on the first day.
i couldn't either for the longest time. you have to sit and mess with it for a while. my sounds are all on different numbers so i couldn't give you the right sound. just find the sound that sounds like a sitar and change the oscillators, you need two at once. i need to make a tutorial. hahaha.
@lkb94 sorry this is late. but: you basically just start with a basic waveform or initial patch, and then work your way down the board tweaking the knobs till you have the sound you want, it just takes a little bit of time to get used to creating your own sounds.
This just is a splendid instrument with a lot of cool options.
Something that should also be pointed out for the newbies to making their own music - it can function as a USB soundcard with full ASIO and all that. So you dont need a seperate soundcard to get proper recordings, and it also works as a controller for VSTis. So with this, a DAW program like Cubase and download some free VSTi and you got a complete studio really with all the most important functions. It's more awesome than you think!
@MarctheDarc Hey Marc,how do you think the SH-201 compares to the R3?It seems every body's crazy about the R3 for some reason.I personally wouldn't bother with anything less than 49 keys even if it has the sounds of a Virus.You seem to like the SH a lot and just wanted to see ur opinion on the R3.
@niteowlsam Make no mistake, the R3 is a good and solid synth. The Korg MMT sound engine inside it (same as EMX-1, Radias and MK XL), is a work of genious. I prefer the SH-201 though. The interface is much more straightforward - 1 knob 1 function (almost). Where with the R3 you flip through screen-menus. The SH-201 is built to sound close to an analog, and the filter is brilliant, so on raw synth sounds, it's unbeaten. Where the R3 has a bunch of PCM samples like piano and so on, as a strength.

@MarctheDarc What? It also acts as an ASIO interface? I knew the new Gaia could do that, but I wasn't so sure about the 201. Since I Just ordered an sh 201 as a studio instrument I now have one more reason to look forward to the delivery date.

It can also do CD-quality recording from the RCA inputs - just note that the internal soundgenerator and RCA-in doesnt track as seperate inputs in the DAW, so if you do an audio recording of both at the same time, it will be placed in the same track/audiofile.
You cant really go wrong with the SH-201, although i'm liking quite a few of the new features on the Gaia SH-01 too - just too bad that they didnt include the feedback-osc.
@MarctheDarc Hooorray! I received my sh 201 at last. The store I ordered it a couple of weeks ago, didn't have any left it stock, so I bought one off ebay, used but almost in mint condition and 220 bucks below the regular retail price for a new one. I spent nearly all day playing and tweaking sounds -pure bliss.
@dudewhosaysarrh Congratulations! Sounds like you made a pretty sweet deal to boot ;-) It just is a sweet synth. If you didnt get a printed manual for some reason, i recommend downloading the PDF from Rolands homepage, the parameter-control section towards the back is pure gold! There's ALOT of extra tweaking features to be found beneath the surface. And tweaking this synth is worth so much!
Ya, it has two oscillators. If I recall correctly, each oscillator has 7 waveforms: triangle, square, (I forgot what it's called, maybe an asymmetrical square?), sine, saw, supersaw, and noise.

This is a badddass synth, i HIGHLY recommend it. I've had mine for a while, but recently bought a MiniMoog Voyager. I still use this for pads, as it is polyphonic. If you play around with it you can get it to sound pretty analog and phat.

You can down load most any sound path from your computer into your 201, it's set up for that kind of thing. Read up on it more through your users manual.
