this tune is arguably the first pure bebop composition. Bebop of course had been around for about a year or so, maybe longer, but Parker wrote this tune specifically for bebop. That was new.
my new objective in life is to run on stage interrupting a concert, grab the mic, sing "salt peanuts, salt peanuts" then run off while yelling SALT PEANUTS!!!!!!
The whole performance is astonishing,climaxing with Max's insanely great solo.Whatever Bird's and Bud's personal problems were at the time,this track is a classic example of how the competitive fire of playing with one's peers can bring out the very best in everyone!
Parker sarcastically calls Gillespie his "worthy constituent"! In "Night in Tunisia" before this during the same concert, Gillespie had been banging on a cowbell during Parker's solo. Parker turned around and shook his head at Gillespie, then took the mic from him and introduced this piece. ;) The commotion heard during Parker's solo in THIS recording is from Gillespie throwing salt peanuts into the audience!!!!
@magicreader1 Awesome info. For years, I could only imagine what was going on during this concert. I could hear the chatter, commotion, etc., but was never certain what was going on. Tell me, where did you get this info?
I don't know why that man is yelling salt peanuts but I sure do like it.

@BuckshotLaFunke
His constituent.
Also, completely amazing that Charlie is playing on his Grafton here, which of course is a plastic saxophone.
