I once owned a 1977 Thunderbird...I bought it in 1992 from someone who worked at a 7-11 for $500. It was a nice car, but did use a lot of gas...only about 12-13 miles per gallon. My T-Bird had a 351 Windsor that was very smooth. However, being an older car, I did have to patch up a rust hole by the passenger side back seat, and did have problems with the car failing AIM tests...it overheated once while I was taking some friends to Cedar Point. I drove it for 2 years before I had to junk it.
Yeah, it sucked gas, polluted like a Chinese coal mine, and required serious upkeep after 60,000 miles. It also rode like a cloud, steered with one finger, had room for all your crap, and the air conditioner would run you out in Tennessee summer. Compared to many things now it was crap but girls loved it and that was all that mattered to me. The good old days weren't all bad.
I guy used to pump gas with, as kid, bought one of these in the summer of '79. It was dark blue with the bright orange interior with matching vinyl roof. I loved that car.
My parents had a '77 when I was a litttle kid. The 2 barrel carb choked the 400 to death. The dealer never could solve its compression knock--the car ran on and shook violently after shutoff. Rust appeared within a few years. Most were gone from the roads by the mid-80's.
@Clint9465 THANK YOU. People are so god damned nostalgic. THE CAR WAS GARBAGE. There's no good reason for a car THAT BIG to have rear leg room SO SMALL. C'mon folks! It might trigger fond memories for you but please don't go on-&-on about it being a good car because quite frankly, it wasn't. Matter of fact, there were few really good American cars in the late '70s. Be honest. AGAIN, I'm not saying that you can't have a soft spot for this stupid barge but pine away for something else please ...
I learnt how to drive and got my first driver's license (Minnesota) in this one. Sweet car. 5.7 L of torque. Bet you could build a Mini just from the hood metal. Getting my Norwegian driver's license in a Mercedes 190 later on was a real anticlimax. There's no substitute for cubic inches. :)
@TheLizardKing1967 Yeah!!! I wanna know Oscartripe--- is that Cheryl Ladd? Was this commercial filmed before or after Farrah left Charlies Angels?? Don't forget folks, that in the first couple seasons, all the characters in the show drove Fords. Bosley had a dark blue 77 Thunderbird with wire wheel covers, and the Angels had Mustang II's (Pintos with the word "Mustang" on them)
The commercial and the song are awesome... the car, eh, it's a matter of taste huh?! I was a wee youngster when these cars were new, and by the time I had an interest in cars these T-Birds were old and rusty. I remember seeing the 1983 T-Bird for the first time and being very very impressed by its rounded aerodynamic looks! Funny...!
My grandfather had a 1977 white Thunderbird with tan interior and padded top. I remember he bought it in October of 1976. That was one badass looking FORD.
my dad has a 77 nicer then no other. original excepet the tires and the oil. and the only thing that ever had to be replaced was a dimmer switch . 55 thousand km black with gold rims stainless steel roof belt chrome package
Beautiful car, this is my favourite model T-Bird of them all.... They really knew how to build them back in the 70's, The T-Bird, LTD II & the Galaxie 500.... Just Beautiful!
What a great commercial! Ford really went to town on the space theme with the Moody Blues soundtrack (not sure if it was them or just sounded like them). Heck, they almost made this - the most ugly of Thunderbirds - seem desirable! And it must have worked, they sold a lot of them during this part of the decade. I know this because many were still gracing our roads into the early 1990s!
we had one in our house; fully loaded with the biggest mill available; white with white leather, full instrumentation; even an ammeter! we are from Puerto Rico, & it cost here 14,000 dollars then...that was quite a lot then; the engine lived on; it was remounted in, of all things, a tow truck! the car, now rides in the Walhalla of motorcars. I will never forget it once got over 110 MPH w/o feeling anything, only way u knew was by looking at the speedo...so smooth it was...
By the late 70's the T-Bird was a shadow of its former self. The original was a two seater sports car. I used to drive one of those 70's boheamouths... Wow, the front end from the windshield to the bumper is longer thatn my current entire car. That whole late 70's era of car building got a little wierd, but it didnt' last.
it was twice its former self. I cant disagree with you more. The late 70s was a terrible time for american automobiles because of goverment regulations that kept forcing more into them too quick. The 77-79 thunderbird is one of the best looking cars ford ever produced.
1977 Thunderbird had for it's time unique styling and I remember seeing this same commercial for the first time when watching Charlie's Angels. It was just after the show was first on the air. RIP Farrah..I am sure she would have looked nice in this car. She looked good in anything.
I took my drive test in my moms 79 T-Bird... I passed. Loved T-birds ever since. I have owned an 81 and still own a 90.
These cars did have style. and you could get rear-ended and have no damage what so ever.. Can't do that these days Big bad ass ride with front bench seat. Rollin 7 deep.
I've got a white over brown '77. Always been in the garage. Never any rust. No rattles after 32 years. It may have never been intended to be economical, but it sure is built to last. I guess you could say, after 32 years of service, and still going, it's more than paid for itself.
the exact body styling? Not hardly a torino based elite which is what the thunderbird replaced looked like a pig. The thunderbird road a modified torino platform the main difference being better handling due to a front anti sway bar and the seat came back further. But the styling on this is alot cleaner than the torino
true, the interior carried over from the 72 torino into the duce body after the torino bowed in 76. this started ford's downsizing combining the torino replacement and t-bird up to 79 then carry over to the fox. the 79 LTD went to larger fox platform also.
I love my 78! I drive it alot more than my 96 Grand marquis. If you look at these hybrids and future cars they keep talking about they don't show much promise they all lack size and style.

Like the word "trimmer": I used to see these cars on the road, and they were HUGE!
I also have to laugh at how the narrator portrayed the vinyl roof as a cool feature. There used to be many cars with peeling vinyl roofs, and they looked TERRIBLE. Even an intact vinyl roof looks tacky. Interestingly, some GM dealers today still offer a vinyl roof as an option despite the objections of GM.
your full of bull, the top nada value for one is $8,875, and there is a pristine model that has 20k miles , that is the "heritage coupe model" (special edition-linked to tthe mark v collector series+diamond jubilee) and its going for 3,500......quick lying, or better yet show us some vehicles that are selling for 8-12k.....
to find the one im referring to go to ebay and search heritage coupe
so no you cant say what they are going for b/c your wrong! and stupid at that
Ok cold plays you have shown your true colors ebay them yourself. they have a stripper model for sale for 8000 bucks. And since you call names also when you can't argue intelligently you lose Good day to you sir.
I know that but it still was a huge car wider than most "full sized", only a couple inches in length seperated it from many "full sized" cars of that era and actually it was as big as some full sized of that era!
well i will tell from personal experience put the thunderbird next to a similiar vintage ltd 2 door you will see the difference lol. Or better yet the lincoln town car that thing was humungous. Love them all anyway!
I know the Town Car was humungous, I still the the "really" noticeable difference was the 79 to 80 T-Bird. The width was way down on these besides a major length change. We were looking at some old pics adn we had a 77 T-Bird, 78 Mark 4 and a few other land yatchs, and my mom was saying wow I can't believe I use to drive those big things.
Lol but dammit the 77 tbird was downsized! I think the acutal difference was in the wheelbases of the cars. Dosen't matter take my word these cars are alot more fun to drive than the modern small ones.
Ha! I love this video..I had this car, but it was a dark maroon with moonroof, Town Landau...at :20 I can see sparks at the rear, just like mine when I backed into a tall curb & tore the rubber support that held up the tailpipe. lol.
Man, these cars were so damn nice for the times. I remember the only complaint I had about this ride was the damn black glue that held the rear & front glass in, it melted in the hot desert sun in Vegas & would make a mess, could not clean it up, other than that beautiful cars.
This so sad to see this.cars were cool looking ..no worry about the gas.....Now the car thing is crap damn gas cost to much...you cant enjoy the car no more...the world realy starting to suck.......
Wow, could they have made that car ANY bigger? It went to gargantuan proportions in the late 70's. They should've taken a tip from the Mustang dept. and down-sized it a bit instead and left the yachts for Lincoln/Mercury.
great cars. Weren't real good on gas (especialy if you had the 351M) but you could drink coffee while driving through the grand canyon without spilling a drop. They liked to eat power window motors though.
bull shit i have a 77 t-bird thats getting 18 to the gallon and it has a c6 and a 400 cleveland. all though its got low 3's for gearing and the rear is sitting on 275/60 r15's
no actually its sitting in the shop and im putting a DOVE block 460 bored 80 over and stroked out to a 512cid. WTF does talkin about a car have to do with living in it?!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Late seventies T-birds are very popular cars for homeless people. They are comfy to sleep in and utterly worthless. On the other hand who puts a built engine into a car that weighs over 4000 pounds?!? Some smart aleck in a VW GTI will blow you away and get 30 MPG doing it.
any where any time i would race that german POS and its called being old school about things. and the late 70's t-birds is the only decant gen. made and y.. r u homeless??? do u live in a bird??? just stoppin in the local library to talk shit about ppl loving their car? and i just didnt settle witha bird i also gotta sweet 67' galaxy 500 witha mild 390.and so what if i want to make a sweet ground pounder outta a car that u dont c anymore. and i bet ur driving a volvo s60 arent u. whatever dude
Dude/bitch -- whatever you are -- WTF is up with you leaving stupid-ass comments at all the T-Bird videos. Seriously...these people are just trying to enjoy themselves. Get an f'n life.
I still remember the day we drove our '78 TBird home from the dealership. The neighbor lady came outside in her housecoat and gawked...I powered the passenger window down...she came up to get a closer look, leaned in and exclaimed, "OOOOoooo, Joanne (that was my Mom's name) We got ourselves a sex wagon!"
My aunt had this particular year/model for ages, and it ran well. I suspect the everything is bigger logic of the '70s that ended a few years later was that ''Thunderbirds'' are majestic if not mythical beasts that fly through the air, and Detroit will be damned if they don't make it.
The Seventies of course ended in a giant hangover.
The Thunderbird, especially the '70s era models, were the greatest cars ever made.
Ford was really thinking when they made the T-Bird into what it was in the '70s.
they took the LTD, which was the greatest luxury car ever made, cross-bred it with the Mustang, which was the greatest sports car ever made, and created something that was so unbelievably unique; a massive luxurious powerful sporty land yaught. I like to call the Thunderbirds of that era SPORTS BOATS.
LOL Yes, the 77-79 Birds were good looking, and they were large by todays standards. But they were actually DOWNSIZED for 77 from the 76 models to try to make them more fuel efficient. The 70-76 Birds were HUGE!! Ahhh those were the days....
I have a 30-second commercial for the '78 Thunderbird, it uses the same music and announcer, price had gone up to $5808. It was from the very first tape recorded in the 70s that I had found at a thrift store. I'll try to put it online soon.
This T-bird was built on the Torino/LTD II platform. IIRC it used the same bodyshell as all the other two-door Torinos but the longer wheelbase of the four-door sedans and wagons, with the difference going into an extra-long hood.
I drove my dads 1979 Thunderbird I rem the bill $8995 Canadain , that thing was like driving the Titanic , the outside was big but inside was small and fuel economy well 17 mpg if you are lucky that was with the 302 this one most likey came with the 351 cleveland

Lumotaku 3 years ago
I know that it was but it was still a big car even then, most of the weight savings was due to the smaller engine!
loaferguy73 3 years ago
well i will tell from personal experience put the thunderbird next to a similiar vintage ltd 2 door you will see the difference lol. Or better yet the lincoln town car that thing was humungous. Love them all anyway!
Lumotaku 3 years ago
I know the Town Car was humungous, I still the the "really" noticeable difference was the 79 to 80 T-Bird. The width was way down on these besides a major length change. We were looking at some old pics adn we had a 77 T-Bird, 78 Mark 4 and a few other land yatchs, and my mom was saying wow I can't believe I use to drive those big things.
loaferguy73 3 years ago
Lol but dammit the 77 tbird was downsized! I think the acutal difference was in the wheelbases of the cars. Dosen't matter take my word these cars are alot more fun to drive than the modern small ones.
Lumotaku 3 years ago
man i wish i could go back and buy a new one!, the 70's where the last of the best, this is a real car! dam i got to get me one of these!

Ha! I love this video..I had this car, but it was a dark maroon with moonroof, Town Landau...at :20 I can see sparks at the rear, just like mine when I backed into a tall curb & tore the rubber support that held up the tailpipe. lol.
JoeyJr702 3 years ago
The '77 T-bird has a "wide stance"? I wonder if Sen. Larry Craig (R-ID) has seen this video?

A radio too? I gotta have one.

Man, these cars were so damn nice for the times. I remember the only complaint I had about this ride was the damn black glue that held the rear & front glass in, it melted in the hot desert sun in Vegas & would make a mess, could not clean it up, other than that beautiful cars.
chuckycheese22 3 years ago
Damn....Look at the price of that thing brand new! Nice car.

This so sad to see this.cars were cool looking ..no worry about the gas.....Now the car thing is crap damn gas cost to much...you cant enjoy the car no more...the world realy starting to suck.......
BLAISTOM 4 years ago 4
Wow, could they have made that car ANY bigger? It went to gargantuan proportions in the late 70's. They should've taken a tip from the Mustang dept. and down-sized it a bit instead and left the yachts for Lincoln/Mercury.
jupitr2 4 years ago
This is a downsized car the car lost 900 pounds for 77!
Lumotaku 3 years ago
wow is this for real , is this the new Ford Thunderbird 2008 ? and the price is only $5434 ?? no it can not be
sneyder69 4 years ago
Is that a serious question?
mastazuki91 3 years ago
I'll take this over all the modern crap they sell now.
Lumotaku 4 years ago
great cars. Weren't real good on gas (especialy if you had the 351M) but you could drink coffee while driving through the grand canyon without spilling a drop. They liked to eat power window motors though.

Late seventies T-birds are very popular cars for homeless people. They are comfy to sleep in and utterly worthless. On the other hand who puts a built engine into a car that weighs over 4000 pounds?!? Some smart aleck in a VW GTI will blow you away and get 30 MPG doing it.
dawnnaYT 4 years ago
any where any time i would race that german POS and its called being old school about things. and the late 70's t-birds is the only decant gen. made and y.. r u homeless??? do u live in a bird??? just stoppin in the local library to talk shit about ppl loving their car? and i just didnt settle witha bird i also gotta sweet 67' galaxy 500 witha mild 390.and so what if i want to make a sweet ground pounder outta a car that u dont c anymore. and i bet ur driving a volvo s60 arent u. whatever dude
onecylanderracer 4 years ago
Asshole I would take this over anything VW makes unless you have ever drove a car like this and can appreciate the feel and ride shut your ass up.
Lumotaku 3 years ago
Dude/bitch -- whatever you are -- WTF is up with you leaving stupid-ass comments at all the T-Bird videos. Seriously...these people are just trying to enjoy themselves. Get an f'n life.

I still have my parents 79 Cougar which they bought as a demo in 1979. You talk about a land yacht/tank.
James05574 4 years ago
I still remember the day we drove our '78 TBird home from the dealership. The neighbor lady came outside in her housecoat and gawked...I powered the passenger window down...she came up to get a closer look, leaned in and exclaimed, "OOOOoooo, Joanne (that was my Mom's name) We got ourselves a sex wagon!"

A friend of mine owns a 1974 Bordeaux Edition which fully loaded was over $12,000. about $40,000 in todays money.
frankd1965 4 years ago
My aunt had this particular year/model for ages, and it ran well. I suspect the everything is bigger logic of the '70s that ended a few years later was that ''Thunderbirds'' are majestic if not mythical beasts that fly through the air, and Detroit will be damned if they don't make it.
The Seventies of course ended in a giant hangover.
daftmahatma 4 years ago
These were actually good cars!!
mhevalow 4 years ago
BTW, when you come to a red light beside an early '70s thunderbird, don't try to race it. That massive boat will kick your ass.
wilkes85 4 years ago 2
The Thunderbird, especially the '70s era models, were the greatest cars ever made.
Ford was really thinking when they made the T-Bird into what it was in the '70s.
they took the LTD, which was the greatest luxury car ever made, cross-bred it with the Mustang, which was the greatest sports car ever made, and created something that was so unbelievably unique; a massive luxurious powerful sporty land yaught. I like to call the Thunderbirds of that era SPORTS BOATS.
wilkes85 4 years ago 2
Nice, but nothing beats my '66 T-Bird with sequentail signals!

I own 1984 Ford Thunderbird when I was in High School.

LOL Yes, the 77-79 Birds were good looking, and they were large by todays standards. But they were actually DOWNSIZED for 77 from the 76 models to try to make them more fuel efficient. The 70-76 Birds were HUGE!! Ahhh those were the days....
triman95 4 years ago
I had one it had the 400m engine in it sucked gas like it had a hole in the tank good crusin car .

I have a 30-second commercial for the '78 Thunderbird, it uses the same music and announcer, price had gone up to $5808. It was from the very first tape recorded in the 70s that I had found at a thrift store. I'll try to put it online soon.
eyeh8cbs 4 years ago
This T-bird was built on the Torino/LTD II platform. IIRC it used the same bodyshell as all the other two-door Torinos but the longer wheelbase of the four-door sedans and wagons, with the difference going into an extra-long hood.
nlpnt 4 years ago
I suspect then it wasn't exactly the most space efficient T-bird made!!!

YOU're smart.

I drove my dads 1979 Thunderbird I rem the bill $8995 Canadain , that thing was like driving the Titanic , the outside was big but inside was small and fuel economy well 17 mpg if you are lucky that was with the 302 this one most likey came with the 351 cleveland
revelation1965 4 years ago
It may have been a big seller in the US - but that thing would look like a Cruiseliner when parked alongside anything from Europe or Japan!!!

Believe it or not, that ('77-'79) was one of the best-selling T-birds of all time.
jdizzle61 4 years ago
Strangely, that was one of the better looking Thunderbirds..... much better styling than the "bubble" version of the 80s.
