@charreva He invaded Rome because the Senate was stealing from the Roman people and anyone who said otherwise was either killed or enslaved. After years of rigged elections so the current senate could stay in Power Caesar traded his daughter to Pompey for soldiers which he used to conquer Gaul then Rome. If you'll notice when he was in power Rome was at its heigth and when he died it slowly crumbled.

carcalla actually gave citizenship to every free man in the empire both free born, and freed. claudius just gave citizenship to a few prominent people in the provinces.

Sulla is more notoriously known for being one of the primary harbingers in the eventual demise of the republic.Scipio Africanus was probably greater in ability & moral bearing.
The finest Roman ever was Claudius. He began the process of granting citizenship throughout the empire. Without his far-sightedness Rome would not have been as unified as it was for as long as it was.
@voltshock99 You mean Carcalla of course? He was the one who wanted to give every inhabitant of the empire full Roman citizenship...and he got killed for his efforts
Nope, I mean Claudius. He served as emperor from 41 to 54 ad, between the reigns of Caligula and Nero. Caracalla was the one who extended citizenship to everyone who didn't already have it, but Claudius was the first to extend citizenship to those living beyond Italy. He was born in Gaul and so had little of the xenophobia "natural born Romans" often exhibited.
Hey, obviously you're a huge friend of Claudius, therefore I wondered if you already read or watched I, Claudius by Robert Graves. I am reading and watching it and can only recommend it. :)

I agree Claudius' decision was what led to the eventual downfall of Rome. Before him being a citizen of Rome had value, after that it became worthless bestowed upon those whom cared less for Rome's welfare than citizens had in the past.
I will write a latintest about this stuff tomorrow...
The shit is, that I don't have a clue. This helped me a little, but I think you left some important details out, didn't you? For examle Caesar crossing the Rubico, or did I get something wrong there?!
@ImperialGuard9001 He was not a tyrant,he was an opportunist. The late republic unlike the middle republic was unstable because of the series of civil wars,if the republic was stable it would have been tough to overthrow the senate. The senate lost it's power,if Caesar was defeated it would probably last for a few decades before another popular general seized power and took control.
yeah...we didn't have enough time to check the spelling. we were REALLY bent for time. this video was created in one day (the day before it was due). pretty good for one day.. i think :P

Some things not mentioned about the last of the populari
He cut taxes cut the high cost of usury by the oligarchs that killed him, gave land back to the peasants & middle classes, pardoned rents for a year for the poor in Cicero's slums, just some of the reasons the oligarchs had to kill him. He was sharing some of the wealth. It's those same family lines today hoarding much of the same wealth & killing the competition all through history...JFK, MX, MLK, RFK, there is no law for the rich
Indeed but this was Rome and rome was so big so they ruled over 25-35 %? (I think it was) over Europe because of Julius Ceasar. He was a great conquer and he was not like Hitler and the nazi, they killed innocent not Julis he killed the enemys army!
Caesar was no doubt a great man from any angle. But he did commit genocide basically in Gaul. It's estimated he killed 1million gauls that's 1 in 4 he killed! But comparing Hitler and Caesar is like comparing apples and oranges.
Actually, he was instructed by the Roman senate to reconquer or otherwise 'settle' the areas north of Italy. In otherwards, because of the growing unrest in th Gallic, Germanic, and Celtic tribes (Around his uncle Marius's time, they had had to be pushed away from Rome) - his responsibility was to take care of them. He also gave numerous, numerous pardons. Many of the casualties were people who refused his pardons.
No... after Caesars will that Octavian is Julius Caesar's heir, he went to gather an army, and was to be called Gaius Octavian Caesar, look up histroy my friend
Many talk about Jesus coming back, but I have to ask: What about Caesar? You don't think he is capable of coming back too? Let me tell you there is no Jesus without Caesar! 3- A way for Caesar to get the money he needed to repay those debts mentioned

no wonder if you cause a cilvil war and the enemy conquer you land just like WOII the people dont like the nazis when they take they are land
phoenixking321 2 years ago
