There was a time when the East African Safari Rally drivers would only wear green bush hats. I saw so many Safari Rallies. I would especially enjoy the day before the Rally when all the entrants/vehicles were parked together for technical compliance. Saw the Singh brothers (who won in a Volvo PV544 in 1965) and many of the regulars. The Safari Rally was a test for the drivers and vehicles.
My Dad died recently who was a Safari driver and I sent this video out as a tribute to him. I grew up in Kenya and was there around this time. They were special. RIP Roy Robinson 1928-2008
can't stop watching this vid. good old days of the 2 wheel drive rally cars. no roll cage, no racing seats, just get out there and drive. that's skill and guts for you!
back when SpeedVISION actually showed interesting shows and wasn't infected with the pussy's in NASCAR shit. Why can't we go back to what the channel originally was?
These were the good old days when there was plenty of mud, floods and rains around making it really good to watch and naturally difficult for the drivers. But this was and still probably is the world's toughest rally.
Don't know if anyone noticed but the navigator that gets out of the Peugeot #11 at the check point is a young Jean Todt..manager of the Ferrari F1 Team
I would like to inform you all that bjorn waldegard is a safari legend and has just won for a 5th time! bjorn won this years safari with his son mathias co-driving 30 years after his first safari
I have a 1977 4-door Colt Lancer. This vid brought tears in my eyes. In those days, there was a time when this car took 1st place 3 times in a row or was it, 1st, 2nd & 3rd places in one event. I love this car.
As far as I'm concerned, the car is quite easy and CHEAP to maintain. But you have to get used to some missing convenience like intermittent-wipers. My AC is the hanging type and is more efficient than most newer cars. I put in a 5-speed transmission and it keeps up with most cars on the highway.
Quite right!awsqtmai, and thankfully it's now called The East African Safari Classic - The World's Greatest Rally. Proper rally cars, proper rally drivers, and miles and miles of bloody Africa. Greetings to all the mud crews from a few years back, and Bwana Waldegard.
This is absolutely great. You have put on the music by one of my favourite "heavy metal" bands - Deep Purple as well as one of my favourite events in the Safari Rally Calendar. I, always made it a point to watch the rally cars drive pass and especially in the capital, Nairobi and go to whatever check point I could as a child.
Great cars, great drivers, greatest rally there ever was. I am Kenyan, born and raised and this brought back memories of my younger years. Easter weekend came with Safari Rally fever and we would drop everything to go and watch the cars zooming by! Thanks dude!
Joginder Singh was one of the best! The man had some serious skills. It's a good thing he is still involved in the sport. He is part of the team organising for this year's East African Classic Safari Rally. He has a auto parts shop in Nairobi and a couple of years ago he was rebuilding a replica of the Colt Lancer that he used to campaign in the Safari back in the 70's. It was a sight to behold!
I still remember his car. naturally, I supported him all the time. I also remember that once, when my family and I were just driving out of Belle Vue Drive In after watching a "Bollywood" movie, during Easter Weekend, a rally car drove past very fast. But I managed to get a look at the vehicle and my father asked me who it was and I replied "Joginder Singh." Later, on reaching home, I checked the number and I was correct.
Thats really cool, man. I still admire those old school rally cars like the Colt Lancer, Datsun 1600 SSS, Ford Escort Mk2 etc. Since the advent of the Classic Safari Rally, I have been hoping that Joginder Singh would participate even once.
I remember the way we would rush for the newspapers in the morning to keep up with who was still in the rally.
Do you remember the time a couple of Dodge Ram Chargers took part in the rally?
The other driver who I always supported was Shekhar Mehta. Recently, I was informed by one of his relatives, who is also, incidently, related to me, that he passed away some tiem back. But I remember the incident when I heard that Joginder Singh's vehicle had flipped over but he was fine and was still in the rally. I vaguely remember about the Ram Chargers but not much.
Joginder was a hero for me.He was named 'Simba ya Kenya' and all Kenyans supported him. Easter was such a special time & the Safari was just magic. All the media in Kenya went crazy. The great story was how the local drivers kept winning against the Europeans.
rafiki, I entirely agree with you - he was known as "Simba ya Kenya."If ever, Joginder Singh did not not, A lot of people, I think got upset at not being able to see him. The other was ofcourse, Shekhar Mehta. Easter was always the time that I looked forward to and seeing those cars drive past. This video jur relives the original spirit I think.
He may have done - I can't remember. But I know that he was one of the best Rally drivers around in Kenya besides Joginder Singh. Unfortunately Shekhar Mehta is no longer with us.
