  • Which Tuba & in what configuration?

  • I am thinking of getting some Tuba Subwoofers vs Growlers, what do you think?

  • Did you switch to these from BFM? You must be the same person I'm currently reading @ DJF on the BFM thread (I'm only up to about page 10)

  • @LEVLHED Yeah, that's me.

  • nice. I'm fixin' to get the same set up myself....

  • @LEVLHED You're going to love it.

  • @MrNightro Jeff is personally delivering four of them to my house today! And I live like two and a half hours drive away from him!

I have 2 XTi4000's just waiting to make them breathe:)

  • @LEVLHED Jeff is a great guy with great designs & products back by just as great service. I was going to post up a couple videos from one of the gigs I did with my JTR rig but the camera was stolen during the gig. I'll have to take videos at another of my gigs though I am taking a break forthe moment from gigs.

  • @LEVLHED Ditch the xti and go I tech ITs like comparing a volkswagan to a porche. I stated out low as well but the difference is unbelievable. I am now doing 18 growlers and 3 I tech 8000's

  • @harleyshouseofsound Do a high definition video showcasing your system please.

  • and the mackies arnt bass shy on their own

  • You know I just placed the track you're playing, it's a sample taken from Shabba Ranks, Home T & Cocoa T -- Pirates Anthem sing.

  • One question pops to mind though, why didn't you wait for the 2010 version of the growler the upgrade your first two Growler drivers? Or is it that you did already?..., (even though the release isn't official yet).

  • Cant speak for Bman but I didnt wait cause the 2008/9 Growlers are plenty loud for most gigs. The extra power handling was not needed for my setup. Also, the 2010 growlers have a slightly different enclosure than the 2008/9. Although you can mix and match them, I wanted all the same with the same response curves.

  • That's the sweet thing about it, they are new & where sold in the original packaging. They where just bought out to demo a sub system in store for a client then placed in racks for about three months in the back store room before they sold them at the discount price.

Plus the six year QSC warranty is still intact so it was a great find & they make great companions to the Growlers.

The Crest 9200 looks like a good amp option as well.

  • Did you lower your HPF setting now that you have four of the Growlers. You now pick up a little extra extension with the coupling of the two extra Growlers.

Have you tried your Growlers on another amp outside of the QSC PLX? I know there are many who don't like the sound of a PLX on sub duty & prefer something like a QSC RMX or the like. Personally I have used many types of amps on sub duty but my present is my fav, the QSC PL380.

  • The only other amp that I have used on them was the Lab. My next purchase is going to be the Crest Audio pro 9200 or a PL380. The RMX series is nice but heavier. I am trying to stay as light as possible.

  • I've own a few Crest amps throught he years such as the Crest 8001, the Crest 9001. I've also owned Crown Macrotech 5000 amps as well as QSC EX4000 amps (my previous fav amp on subs). However the PL380 weighs in so much less then many other amps on the market as well as packing so much more power then many at the same time.

  • Yes the PL380 is my dream amp but 3300 dollars is a lot for a guy who only dj's for a living. The pro9200 is only $2200 that puts out 1300 @ 8 ohms compared to the 775 of my plx 3602.

  • You just missed out on a great deal then, locally there was a guy selling a fairly new PL380 for $1,500 but I hesitated too long thus missed the deal. However I was able to score a floor demo unit from off of Ebay for $1,800 about 3 weeks back. He had 2 such inits left but have since both remaining units have been sold.

  • I don't know if I could go the used route. I need everything to be brand new with that brand new smell, packaging etc lol.

  • You should look into a PL380 I had a dealer of mine selling a PL380 new for $2100 with full warranty and don't be afraid of used it will save you a lot of money, I have saved around $2000-$3000 buying used for my rig. That's the price of 2-3 new subs!

Plus another big thing for the PL380 is being 80-85% efficient it can get a good amount out of a 15 amp outlet even being capable of 2500 watts/channel.

  • Well, I have 4 underpowered Growlers lol. Each one was only getting at the most 550 watts of power compared to the rating of 1600. Also, in situations like these, I just elevate the mackies as high as I can to get them over people's heads. This was a BIG difference from the 6 that I had on the mighty Lab Gruppen.

  • I wouldn't worry, with the 2008/2009 driver (The one you have) you really don't want to have more than about 1100 watts available at clip to each driver. So I am sure you could put something on them like a Pro9200, PL6.0, or PL380 on them and get a touch more output.

I got my PL380 a few weeks back for $1800 and is very impressive on subs. I am not into Audiophool or "snake-oil" audio stuff but it is impressive.

  • 1100 watts max at clip is correct.... but the y key is to NOT clip!!! You can make the Growler pound with 1500 watts and no clipping!! Just clean power. I have a block of 4 Growlers with 1500 watts going to each and a dbx driverack to prevent clipping. Rule of thumb is ~1000 watts for a novice that might push into clipping & up to 1600 watts each for a pro and/or a DJ with clip limiting technology. Remember ... headroom is always nice. Hope this helps!!!

  • "1100 at clip" was meaning right when the amp would go into clip. Not actually clipping specifically. So 1100 watt peaks from a 1500 watt amp and 1100 watts from an amp rated for 1100 right before clipping "should" be putting out the same signal. So with that, meeting and talking with Jeff Permanian several have gone with the 1400-1600 watts per driver and have killed a driver or two. Jeff P still personally recommends 1000 watts and that will get them loud.

    Phil

  • I have put a 1100 watt amp on each of a Growler, and you will start to get into power compression after about 45 minutes of pushing the Growlers harder with that amp, (right before clip) and that is with live music, that has a much higher crest factor than compressed DJ music. I use a PL380 on my Growlers right now, but I have a peak limiter set to show me when I am sending a peak of about 1100 watts and I just keep it out of limit and that keeps you safe with the crest factor I am working with

  • But it really comes down to having enough rig for the gig. I got the PL380 in anticipation of the new driver that is coming out that should have no problem with the PL380. Jeff is recommending 2000 watts for the new driver even though the "RMS" rating is doubling. He did that because too many people blew up the old driver with 1400+ watts amps.

1000 watts is plenty for the 2008/09 driver and if you don't have enough SPL, you need more subs!

    Take Care,

    Phil

  • Dont be afraid of using up to 1500 watts on the 2008/9 driver and as Livesound states 1000 is plenty to get the Growlers loud. I am a firm believer of plenty of head room!! You can always turn the amp down but a smaller amp means you may go into clip which can result in death to the driver. Its all in how you use the Growler. I use them for DJing, thus can drive more power into them than live bands can. For all of you, please take a listen to the Growlers!! You will be impressed!!

  • How are your Mackies keeping up to four Growlers?

  • Nice!
