I'm presuming English Coonhound's were bred for hunting? If so that's probably why he hides things from natural instinct. My dog hides his stuff some times and he's a hunting dog. Usually he hides his ball and when you say "where's your ball?" he'll look at you with his ears up and leave you to find it. I think he forgets where he put it sometimes.
