Gary Lewis was supposed to be my choir teacher but he moved out of the position. I was so disappointed because I was missing out on the instruction of this caliber!
I agree with the comments below.. Why would he ever consider singing that falsetto when he can nail it like that? This versions is is their best on here i think. Cheers for posting.
Yeah. I I have a tremendous amount of respect for the collective musicianship of Max Q -- I don't understand why he didn't get a bit of expert coaching (maybe from his dad?) and post that sucker full voice every time they sang the song -- because when he does, it screams!
Question for someone who owns the CD -- does he post full voice on that recording?
I know I just commented and I shouldn't again this shortly after but I have to have this question answered my someone. Does Max Q make all their own arrangements? I want to find this particular arrangement of, 'You Can Fly' but I am having a difficult time doing so. PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!
I love Max Q! In particularly the bass, Jeff Oxley, not sure if his last name is spelled correctly. I'm a bass myself and if I ever had a hero, it's him.
Thanks on the vid compliment! I wish the picture was clearer, but in a concert with a still camera, it's a little difficult to grab a good image. I'm glad the sound at least does MaxQ SOME justice.
They are frakin AMAZING! I love the classic barbershop but I love the new stuff too! These guys make me NOT CARE because I just plain enjoy it! Their CD For the Children is wonderful and my boys love it - and even though it isn't all classic bbs, it is beautiful and full of mind blowing harmonies! I also love that their LIVE performance sounds JUST as fantastic as their CD in a studio!!!! Love Max Q!
what i find makes a barbershop arrangement distinctly barbershop is not simply the high number of 7th chords, but the high frequency of secondary dominants. this is where most of the 7th chords come from in the first place. i believe contestability also is based on a clear introduction, chorus and tag. i'm not sure on that.
There has to be a certain percentage of 7th chords as well as some voicing rules(lead must have they melody for a certain percentage etc.) Also the parts must be mostly homo-rhythmic not all "doo" with a solo. Just a few things
This was such a good performance. I have made previous comments about them in the past, not caring for them much but wow, bite my tongue I feel like an idiot, they are so good now. Love it!!!
Max q is an ACAPELLA quartet. yes, their main art form is bbshop, but why shouldn't they do other styles? and by the way, the 'you can fly' is barbershop, it's just not contestable. I thought their children's cd is genius because they had awesome music and pulled off the jazzy stuff really well and it was something really new.
Acoustix's Jazz Jazz Jazz cd, along with Cool Yule are prime examples of a "barbershop" quartet NOT doing bbshop music. Same with Realtime's new cd.
To all who are unfamiliar with Barbershop culture, there's been a sort of ongoing cold war of the KIBbers (Keep It Barbershop) vs. the Progressives (those who feel that Barbershop should adapt with the times or else fade away entirely). ChopGaMan is an example of a KIBber.
The whole argument is silly. Why not do what other genres do? There is Classic Rock, and more modern Rock, for instance. Why not have Classic Barbershop, and more modern Barbershop?
There are BASIC, FUNDAMENTAL qualities to each major genre of music. Any music that lacks the fundamentals should not be considered of that genre. In the case of Rock, there is the Rock Beat (a half-beat played by the Bass Guitar and/or Bass Drum on the half-beat just before either the first or second downbeat in a measure). Every single Rock song has the Rock Beat, and any song that lacks it is not Rock (it may be Metal or Pop or Disco or Hip-Hop or some other modern genre, but not Rock).
In Barbershop, the fundamentals are: a capella, four-part, with the Melody NOT being the highest-pitched part, and mostly homophonic (all parts singing same syllables at or about the same time). If it's six-part, it's not Barbershop. If the Melody is the highest part for all or most of the song, it's not Barbershop. If the Melody sings lyrics over "oohs" or "doo-wop" for all or most of the song, it's not Barbershop. And if there is, say, a guitar or piano playing, it's not Barbershop.
This song meets the fundamentals: It's four-part (there are only 4 guys up there, duh!), Melody not the highest part, mostly homophonic (plenty of embellishments [themselves characteristic of Barbershop] notwithstanding), and not an instrument in sight. Therefore, it's Barbershop. Just not CLASSIC Barbershop. See how this works? Both the Progressive AND the KIBbers can be happy with this!
I think you've got a really god point here, I also agree that progressive modern barbershoping often makes this genre a lot more interesting. I sometimes get tired of listening to traditional barbershop arrangements for several hours, because they actually sound quite the same. But it's a good thing that there are clear rules for contestable songs. This makes the singing and the presentation more important than having the best songs & arrangements.
Max Q is one of the most powerful quartets I have ever heard. They are great. However, what really irratates me are the fact that they sing too many contemporay type songs & not enough true Barbershop type song's. For example Acousix & Realtime are also fine quartets but they also sing to many contemporay songs & not enough barbershop songs--in my opinion.
This song is very contemporary but they did not sing it in contest. I think having a good mix of new and old songs, so long as they are arranged in the bbshop style, is good for a quartet. OCTimes is another good example of this.
Most of their songs are arranged in the barbershop style. "Contemporary type" songs is one thing that will help to increase the number of young people in the Society, in my opinion.
I think it's important to remember that we are preserving the barbershop STYLE, not necessarily holding on stubbornly to old songs that (mostly) do not speak to the current generation of young guys. We can still preserve the style while singing newer songs.
True-I understand all about this--Contemporay songs-changing the arrangement to Barbershop stlye to increase the number of young people. Still some songs, even though the arrangement has changed--still is just to contemporay for my taste. Of course--I'm old fashion & not a young Chicken anymore. Ha! Lol!
To further say more about this matter--Go to accepella dot com & click on Max Q's new double Cd "For the Children" & click on alot of the song titles of this CD. Even though the arrangements is changed some--This New CD is a bunch of "CRAP". This ain't Barbershop people. You might as well listen to Manhattan Transfer.
Do you really want to publically keep people from donating money to St. Jude's in memory of the dearly departed young daughter of one of these singers in this way? That's not very nice of you, nor does it speak well for your KIBber position.
20% of each "For the Children" two-CD set goes to St. Jude's.
To call Max Q "crap" really takes guts. I think that even if you don't prefer their arrangements and their "contemporary" music, there is not one ounce of CRAP on ANYthing they do! Have some respect for the dynamic singers and the amazing musicality these four guys have! I mean - most of us would KILL for one OUNCE of their talent! My quartet and chorus has been coached by Tony and he is amazing, generous, kind, funny, and a BARBERSHOPPER through and through. Have some class, man!!
When Max Q formed, I was not a big fan. They are a completely different quartet right now. I also think that they have a shot at being the highest scoring quartet of all time. I don't know if they could have presented this song this well three years ago. Also, for those of you who aren't die hard barbershoppers please notice the "wall" of sound Oxley presents at the tag. It is something to be worshipped. This is truly one of the best tags I've ever heard.
Chumbley1 there is no way this is contestable, but it is great song and display of how talented they are. The other song(Put your arms around me) is quite possibly the hardest song you could ever sing in barbershop and is contestable and will score in the 93-95 range if they sing it like that.
I have always been a Acoustix and Platinum fan. I hope they wil this year because I have been disappointed in Maxq the past 2-3 years. But they have stepped it up.
i've seen MaxQ in concert a few times over the last few years...this concert was by far 100% better than any of the others. They were solid at all times and were so tight they will definitely win this year!
I have NOT been a big MaxQ fan the past 3 or so years(only cause of Tony as a lead) but after seeing this video and another one recently, wow, this is what they need to win the gold this year and I bet they do it.
After giving Jeff a few pointers...I can see he is doing much better now! I am so proud of my student. Just kidding......Jeff Oxley is god!!! Noone comes close...besides me on a Schlag night! sheeeeeee
was that an overtone or did the tenor just think, " i think ill go up an octave for the hell of it"

I was thinking the same thing- they blend their voices right into each other's for that change it's crazy.

If they're swapping, that is amazing. I thought that was Tony on the high root, why would they switch? Tony seems comfy in that range.

Tony's voice is going a bit after all these years of barbershop... not the healthiest technique.
