This reminds me a lot of the old Sega Genesis/PC game Starflight. Except way more graphically advanced :D Gonna try this out, and will buy it if the price is right. I always support good games from indie devs.
@Kole777 The beta testing period will have everyone start from scratch. Once the beta period is finished the beta universe and characters will be cleared. So for those few months everyone will be playing like that yes.
