you need to remember that it was not only Americans who fought in Europe after D-Day. There were British and Free- French and Canadians and men from other countries.  The Russians had the worst time during the war. they had an estimate of almost 24 million casualties, military and civilian.

At the end, if I'd be in charge I'd have ordered the bridge blown immediately and fallen back across the other side.

IT WAS ONLY A SMALL BRIDGE !

Result: Germans can't use it, are blocked off, and mass advancing US troops can overpower them.

Result 2: Allies are slowed down a bit, but it only takes engineers to 3 days or so to set up a bridge crossing for vehicles.

Result 3: All US troops saved and live to go home.
