  • you say its reffered to as the liquide rope coil effect, but its not. you made that up.

  • i only have one question, why was it always going clock-wise?

  • Damnit now I'm hungry for honey.

  • how have i gone from watching "the poop" to this?

  • I am imagining a fountain of honey....

    So relaxing!!!

  • yes, but will it blend?

  • someone should film this with a high speed camera.

  • Cohesion?

  • too much time on your hands dude

  • That is exactly the type of coil POOH uses to generat power.

  • is it me, or does the roping coils change direction?...

  • @hhairball9 it varies to how you start the rotation

  • It would be awesome if you could freeze it somehow and make honey straws for tea and stuff:)

  • i'll drip that honey to my mouth.

  • This is a neat little demonstration!

Fluid dynamics, particularly of viscous fluids, was one of the more interesting subjects I've ever studied.

    But now, answer this...

I know this video was made somewhere in the Northern hemisphere, and probably in a warm climate near sea-level.

How do I know that? ;-)

  • Well, obviously in his profile it says that his country is the United Arab Emirates, which is in the Northern hemisphere. ;)

  • Excellent...

You win the "Occam's Razor" prize! ;-)

I half-expected a slew of pseudo-scientific guesses about "Coriolis effect" or "Quantum entanglement" or "The right-hand rule" or "conscious electrons in Earth's core"... etc..

It gives me hope when make reasonable guesses based on observation & a little research, then choose the simplest sensible explanation.

Now, if you can help spread this "CSV"

(Common Sense Virus) ...the world will be a better place!

    Best Wishes! ;-)

  • @OldSchoolSkill

Been watchin' a lot of House M.D. lately, have we?

  • No. I have seen the show because my wife likes it, but I seldom watch TV.

  • Oh yes...

your fluid simulations are great and I really enjoyed your cello playing! Bach is my favorite, but the Piatti caprice was good too!

    Best of Luck At Julliard!

Your brain and talent will improve the planet.

  • Because of the direction the coils rotate (clockwise or anti-clockwise) and the viscosity is thin (in other words, it's not cold).

Just like you can tell which hemisphere you are in by flushing the toilet and observing the direction the water spirals as it drains.

That's not exactly rocket science. Maybe a career writing scripts for CSI is in your future... ;)

  • See the reply from kotsoft.

The answer is simpler than you might think! ;-)

  • LOL, as if everyone gives their real details in their profile... My answer eradicates the obvious flaw that is the human element.

  • @2000jago actually that is a myth. the coriolis effect isn't observed on such a small scale as a toilet. The direction of the swirl is of a design nature. To observe the coriolis effect in such a way, an enormous tank would be required. i can't point to the exact experiment now though sorry

  • @2000jago You need to study up on science a bit more if you think the way your sink, toilet or shower drains a certain way based on your location on the earth. That is a function of how the object was manufactured not anything to do with the Coriolis effect of the earth spinning and which hemisphere you are in. That is a popular myth. The Coriolis effect does exist but can NOT be observed in something as small as your toilet or in that short a period of time. Sorry to disappoint you.

  • you are some kind of warlock!

  • He was stoned when he found this out!...lol

  • CAN I TAKE BACK MY VIEW

  • great, im hungry now -.-

  • you can do freeze it, liquid nitrogen is the answer!

  • think... if we could freeze the coil... mmmm...

  • not related but i heard that if your engine smokes, put honey in your oil and it will cure it..dunno if it works though

  • Yeah, your car won't smoke anymore, but then it won't run either! Putting any sugar based substance into your car is extremely bad for your engine.

  • hey its awesome it works with shampoo too

  • gotta try that once!

  • Can you do that with other things??

  • watch the end of the video....................

  • thanks for adding fun to tea time.

  • pretty

  • Oh I did this before. Its fun.

  • Not the Coriolis Affect. Coriolis Affect is a moving object that is spinning as it is moving through space and time.

  • i think it goes by another name to it might be "the conversation of angler momentum"

  • sweet jesus I hope your comment was a joke.

  • i meant "the conservation of angler momentum"

  • its the Coriolis effect

  • good video for those who have never seen honey.

  • haha exactly, do one on how to breathe now hahaha

  • sweet (no pun intened)

  • lol :)

  • that hunny looks dyno

  • Yummy!

  • He is twisting the chopstick real fast

  • you sir are a moron

  • thats super cool

  • what sort of camera trickery is this?!

  • Smarter than the average Bear. Can't beat the Honey pot.

  • looks good taste good

  • cool thing dude

  • Think about this as a sculpture :D

  • why is the honey doing this?

  • because the honey is thick and its not like water where it melds together fast it slowly combines

  • i see

  • This is pretty cool and it made me hungry, too! Hahahaha XD

  • so in australia this would spin the opposite way

  • its cool................... not

  • Coriolis Effect is always cool to watch.

Apparently if you were on the other end of the planet it would spin the other way.

Same effect that makes toilets swirl in opposing directions on the northern and southern hemispheres. (Well a perfect funnel or sink is more correct. The Coriolis effect is very weak and the design of the funnel/sink/toilet and how the water is introduced have greater significance to swirl direction. The toilet swirl is a bit of an urban legend.)

  • iv heard this is a lie. as i have seen water going both ways down my plug hole and i live in uk

  • ok. in Controlled experiments this effect is real. A home sink or tub has far too many variables. This is a very weak affect and can be over powered by other forces. You pretty much have to build an apparatus, aka a perfect sink. The principal is the torque applied by the earth spinning. If you were on the equator you travel though space faster than at the poles. So the side of the apparatus closest to the equator is affected differently then other side.

  • I wonder how that feels on my tongue XD

  • O K .......

  • cool...now how do i set my laser printer to stun mode?

  • lolervision!!!

  • haha that looks cool

  • How did you get all that honey on the chopstick?

  • By plunging it into the rather large pot of honey and pulling it out again.

  • it does the same thing with shampoo but i guess you havent heard of that...loljk but it does with pretty much anything thicker than water

  • @psidot thats what she said

  • It's funny, I've seen and done this hundreds of times naturally, but I never stopped to think how cool it looks!

  • uau

  • im hungry

  • thats super cool

  • how much honey is on that chopstick

  • all liquids have a viscosity rate, some more than others, the higher the viscosity the more likely it is to coil

  • I wonder why the green liquid in your "Three Viscoelastic Effects" video didn't make coils like the one with the honey- i mean, they're both viscous liquids, right? What other scientific properties are in play that make this difference?

  • Awesome subbed

  • this was the biggest waste of time yet i couldnt stop watching it

  • lol true

  • that is so cool

  • just curious... who gives the name for all these effects that psidot share in youtube? are the names of the effects in the official list of kitchen and beach phenomena (lol! if there is such a list!)

keep on discovering other effects for the curious pipz in youtube! science made easy...

  • can you make a screen saver on this.. lol

  • honey will never go bad, it will never spoil.. pure honey that is.

    :0

  • AMAZING!

  • wow thats hypnotising, and really cool

  • nice

  • mmm honey

  • youve got some good videos, im subbing

  • I'm not sure but isn't this an example of Chaos Theory? Neways this is pretty kewl.

  • The hell? I just come looking at some fecking rope-coil effect and there's religious psycho babble in the comments? how....unnecessary.

  • lmao i know for real

  • @matycee-i lol'ed

@video-if you did that on other side of earth would i coil in the oppisite direction

  • Cool. I wonder if you were to spin the pot/basin the honey is falling into at variable speeds in either direction if it could stabilize the coiling or produce a different effect.

  • reprint? it wouldnt be "REPENT"? cause if i reprint my sins, i would need a lot of ink and paper

  • haha REPRINT BROTHER!!! REPRINT!!!! haha

  • NOOOOO!!!!! i dont have much ink...

  • all shall be forgiven.

  • i dont think god had that much time on his hands...

  • father, i have come to reprint my sins...what?...im gonna reprint my sins...that cant be good! lmao

  • if i reprint my sins, its gonna turn into a novel.

  • lmao

  • its not that like im not a christian but god isnt really like that the end will come later AND when it comes (believe it or not) it will be a good thing because all the people (in hell or heaven) even the devil will be forgiven and a paradise will be created with everything good and those kind of things.Damn its hard to type a lot!!

  • how did this start on a video comepletely unrelated?

  • what happens when u find out there is no god

  • Then we descend into hedonism and you get to lick that honey off my nipples.

    How's that sound?

  • I was wondering... since the direction of water flowing down a drain differs on each side of the equator, does the same hold true with the coil direction?

  • As an avid QI fan I shall take it upon myself to inform you that this is a myth, water does not flow in different directions in the 2 hemispheres.

Although there are forces acting on the water which come from the Earth's magnetic field, they are far too weak to have any effect.

  • Did You Watch Long Way Down?

Because On One Side Of The Equator The Sitkc In Draining Water Went CLockwise, And On The Other Side It Went Anti Clockwise, Those African Tribe People Must Have Some Special Machinary Or Something Then

  • That looks cool

  • bears love honey

  • cool
