this did not help me much - the voice is monotone and just rambles on without variation which makes it boring, my mind started to wander after 10 seconds so I had to focus like crazy and .... I still don't get it all. I find it a waste of time I rather read about it on wikipedia.
@sarcasticattimes well yes I do have a short attention span - mainly because I daydream like crazy - and I might not be a genius but I do not care for some random person on youtube calling me stupid. You know being rude to people is a worse kind of stupid.
I think my dislike for semiotics was a bit rash and uncalled for. But if you took offence then by all means -> sorry.
Thanks for an interesting video. Could you give us an example or two of scientific principles of semiotics and the practical applications of those principles?
Thanks loads!!!! didn't understand pierce at all, but what i get is that, saussure talks about words in advertising, and pierce talks about imagery in advertising and how interpret it!?
I like this video it's very terse and informative. My only gripe, which has nothing to do with the quality of info, is that C.S. Peirce's name is not pronounced that way, it is pronounced like the handbag, purse, or like pursing your lips together.
Connotation is an act of recognition where the emotional significance of the sign being recognized from experience (right brain function), denotation is an act of interpretation and speculation aimed at determining causality between signs inorder to change the impression of the sign to something more stimulating and favorable (left brain function)
The way we think and feel about signs, words and concepts depends on the relationship of one sign with another (connotation). This relationship can either be functional or casual. The quality and character of a sign is determined by its emotional significance. This is why artists rule our paradigm.
great video, but the narrator should have had more breaks between sentences rather than having constant dialogue, so the viewer cn absob the great!! information their being given.
Wonderful! I came accross the 'Introducing semiotics' text from Icon Books and found it very helpful, and this illustrated approach in film made things clearer still. Congratulations!
Barthes was not forgotten!!! We felt he was maybe too involved to include here- especially when discussing the liguistic and mythological...Your right we should do one specifically on him!!! Thanks!
Great video explanation. Your explanation of Pierce's modes of expression are different than I came to understand them from Daniel Chandler's "Semiotics" and I must admit that kind of had me a little thrown off.
WE chose to stick mainly to Peirce's "icon, index, symbol, typology because it is probably his best known and easily visualized...His sign relations-sign, object, and interpretant- could probably have worked.
Not sure I have the script- we compiled it from different sources...the main authors we found who gave fairly basic overviews are recognized in the front...I'll search my files though!!!
Shit ! I've been struggling with a compulsory course in semiotics and you've explained it so clearly, I've feel like I finally understand something to this science. Still I don't know what it could be used for. Good job !
Well, semiotics is important for understanding a process through which we derive meaning- most importantly, that meaning is negotiated- and this has specific implications for the use of power and control through language.

Though many basic semiotic concepts are ignored, it is a very good introduction to Semiotics.
Needless to say that semiotics used to affect many sciences, esp. social ones
