  • I think you should put more pause, because for "english professor" like me it is hard to fallow.

  • my eyes glazed over :(

  • Awesome organization in this video. A great refresher!

  • this did not help me much - the voice is monotone and just rambles on without variation which makes it boring, my mind started to wander after 10 seconds so I had to focus like crazy and .... I still don't get it all. I find it a waste of time I rather read about it on wikipedia.

  • @KatBjorky You have an extremely short attention span. You are also stupid.

  • @sarcasticattimes well yes I do have a short attention span - mainly because I daydream like crazy - and I might not be a genius but I do not care for some random person on youtube calling me stupid. You know being rude to people is a worse kind of stupid.

I think my dislike for semiotics was a bit rash and uncalled for. But if you took offence then by all means -> sorry.

  • i still dont get it

  • This brings back memories of Social Psychology degree I did in London.

  • Thanks for an interesting video. Could you give us an example or two of scientific principles of semiotics and the practical applications of those principles?

  • Tried studying this my reading.. I.. after an hour I felt like I was swimming in words....thanks your video helped get the idea across ^^

  • Great Work! Semiotics is the initial basis for the more in depth phenomenon of psychological Hyper Reality:

  • spoke way too fast for me to be left with any new understanding afterwards

  • dude....you spoke way too fast how am I supposed to understand the concepts if you don't actually teach

  • Thanks loads!!!! didn't understand pierce at all, but what i get is that, saussure talks about words in advertising, and pierce talks about imagery in advertising and how interpret it!?

  • thanks a lot

  • oh god, I have an essay on this...... so boring (but ur vid is good)

  • could use subtitles... Just saying...

  • please help me >>

what does " sign" represent in saussure concept of structure ??

  • I literally just had a two hours of lecture about semiotics, and this video explains it in 3 minutes

  • I like this video it's very terse and informative. My only gripe, which has nothing to do with the quality of info, is that C.S. Peirce's name is not pronounced that way, it is pronounced like the handbag, purse, or like pursing your lips together.

  • Very nice film!

Though I did cringe a little at the mispronunciation of Peirce's name

  • That was really well done guys. Excellent work.

    Great post. Thnx.

  • Thanks so much for posting this! VERY helpful!

  • Great vid thx!

  • excellent

  • You have to think also about reality of the human being.

  • Good Video!! clearly defined and i have a midterm tomorrow so..

  • Connotation is an act of recognition where the emotional significance of the sign being recognized from experience (right brain function), denotation is an act of interpretation and speculation aimed at determining causality between signs inorder to change the impression of the sign to something more stimulating and favorable (left brain function)

  • very nioce.

  • Peirce is pronounced like "purse."

  • wait... think i got it. is it like an overlapping of ideas ? like realism spilling into pragmatism spilling into agnosticism for example?

  • ok, soo something like michael jackson then connotations like pedophile and weird then a symbol that represents it? like the fish for nursing??

  • 2007 was a great year. so can someone help me?? ok so semiotics are basically the study of avatars kinda or like an embodiment of a concept???

so like a diagram instead of written words??? please adumbrate

  • I like the bit at the end explaining why conciousness in humans is unique

  • I love this! Thanks!

  • thank you

  • Yes! Great video.

  • Very nice video, i have to watch this for one of my uni lessons,

very to the point, loved it.

  • very good, good voice and easy to understand

  • It would have been nice if at the beginning and end they pulled back and showed the whole tree graphic.

  • Great video, well done!

  • Though many basic semiotic concepts are ignored, it is a very good introduction to Semiotics.

Needless to say that semiotics used to affect many sciences, esp. social ones

  • My mind is about to explode!

  • Very nice video! Clear and to the point. Good job, and thanks!

  • great video - thanks for posting!

  • The way we think and feel about signs, words and concepts depends on the relationship of one sign with another (connotation). This relationship can either be functional or casual. The quality and character of a sign is determined by its emotional significance. This is why artists rule our paradigm.

  • straight over my head

  • I like! Helped me grasp the concept of Semiotics with more clarity.

  • dude great video - I really coudnt get my head around semiotics at all...what software did you use for the video - it looks great!!

  • thank you very much ^_^

  • durka durka

  • thanks! use it for my lecture

  • great video, but the narrator should have had more breaks between sentences rather than having constant dialogue, so the viewer cn absob the great!! information their being given.

  • @ctoan1 agreed

  • @ctoan1 That's why Youtube has a pause button.

  • hooray for this video!!

  • thats really good:)

  • my penis is semiotic

    the "choche" = Car

  • sarah smells

  • ayone else studyin this for film studys ight know

  • Will is gay.

    :)

  • The video was well made. But the view of meaning you guys are endorsing is about 100 years out of date...

  • way cool!. pretty clear!.. eye-sound-sensitive video!

  • Wonderful! I came accross the 'Introducing semiotics' text from Icon Books and found it very helpful, and this illustrated approach in film made things clearer still. Congratulations!

  • C. S. Pierce: his name is pronounced like "purse." Otherwise, good job. Check out the KRAP News parody.

When will the Semiotic Square (Greimas) be posted?

  • love this! Make more!! You forgot Barthes! Please do him

  • Barthes was not forgotten!!! We felt he was maybe too involved to include here- especially when discussing the liguistic and mythological...Your right we should do one specifically on him!!! Thanks!

  • Great video explanation. Your explanation of Pierce's modes of expression are different than I came to understand them from Daniel Chandler's "Semiotics" and I must admit that kind of had me a little thrown off.

  • WE chose to stick mainly to Peirce's "icon, index, symbol, typology because it is probably his best known and easily visualized...His sign relations-sign, object, and interpretant- could probably have worked.

  • by any chance do u have the script from this video, if so by any chance could i get a copy. it would be much help cheers

  • Not sure I have the script- we compiled it from different sources...the main authors we found who gave fairly basic overviews are recognized in the front...I'll search my files though!!!

  • i need help finding text about sausurre and semiotics can you or someone help me?thanks anyway

  • Shit ! I've been struggling with a compulsory course in semiotics and you've explained it so clearly, I've feel like I finally understand something to this science. Still I don't know what it could be used for. Good job !

PS: Could you make an another one -:) ?

  • Well, semiotics is important for understanding a process through which we derive meaning- most importantly, that meaning is negotiated- and this has specific implications for the use of power and control through language.

    Thanks for your comments!

What would you like the video to be about?

  • word to ya mom chief.

  • thats a brilliant video. mad helpful
