  • I used this speach for my school. We had to analyse a presentation of somebody. And this presentation is technicly not very good. But he does take you an a journey with him. :D

I have seen this over 10 times now. Love it. :)

  • Rich people have so much free time

  • wow.........meanwhile in africa

  • For anyone interested, His Creative Projects folder is now 60gb's and he won't upload it because it contains Proprietary information

  • Man, my dad would have LOVED this....

  • i know that guy! myth buster! LOL

  • Wow. He's so amazing, his energy and excitement!

  • "Yeah...I know!"

  • When I was younger, the only "creative projects folder" that I had was full of pin-up shots of women. Hands down, Adam Savage's Creative Project Folder wins...

  • HIs excitement is why I love TED

  • awesome!

  • i don't even care what, I would just love to have that much passion for SOMETHING

  • @Shindai I know exactly what you mean!

  • this shit again

  • Cryptozoology novel about two boys who find something strange on the beach one night see video book trailer

  • He's so awesome in real life but he is a parody of science in mythbusters :(

  • And I thought I was detail oriented! Honestly, no one I know is as detail oriented and picky in terms of authenticity for props, but Adam definitely gets the levels of symbolism and why there are people like him and I that love lightsabers and ODST helmets and whatever.

  • I have 20 GB of creative projects too... ok fine... its porn.

  • @lazer1235

Maybe if you weren't so stupid you'd understand.

  • @epilepticdwarf Maybe if you weren't such a faggot replying to a month old comment that I don't really give a shit about, you'd understand, fucking douche-bag.

  • @lazer1235

You probably shouldn't give a shit about that comment either because it further makes you sound like an idiot.

  • Good to know I'm not the only one with intense obsessions. Go Savage!!

  • I have to quote the vlogbrothers (specifically, John Green) on this one: "Saying someone's a nerd is like saying Ýou like stuff'." and "The great thing about being a nerd is that you're allowed to be unironically enthusiastic about things."

Having said that, I am proud to count Adam Savage as a humongous, unbelievably made-of-awesome nerd.

  • @latestranger I JUST SAW THAT VIDEO!!!

    NERDFIGHTERS, UNITE!!!

    DFTBA! XP

  • Wonderful!

  • I thought this was fantastic.

  • First the dodo is always portrayed as huge than its actual size..the dutch governor always recorded everythin they came across in the island..n they made pictures of dodo, which is not exactly

identical some made is small and some made is big..there are many dodo skeletons found in Mauritius in a place called 'mare aux songe'..btw, the last dodo was seen in the 17th century...

  • Adam Savage is my hero, not for Mythbusters, but because he shows the same kind of obsession for projects that I do from time to time. I just wish I had the kind of resources and knowledge that he does.

  • I wish I had so much energy like this guy.

  • @Wolf46

    I recoomend crack.

  • cool.

  • i would love to go into that creative projects folder

  • @SpadeBag talk about a hell of a weekend huh?

  • I believe that we should clone the extinct dodo bird, we cloned the pyrenean ibex, I mean why can't we clone a dodo?

  • he fits sooo well on mythbusters^^ (taking my hat of)

  • Wow. The depths of his nerdiness surpass even myself, and I recently spent ten hours redesigning the label on a bottle of wine because I didn't like the font.

  • whats the point to this story? Kinda reminds me of my accounting professors who give tooooo much information in a short period. Information overload....

  • WOW I love fascinating people! This guy reminds me when the times I smoked weed and would get wild and wonderful ideas and projects!

  • the audience just laughs at anything, its not even funny, What is wrong with u people

  • I'll have to disagree with you, I do find this very intresting, aswell as funny. However I'm sure your far more of an intellectual than myself or any of the other TED attendants, with an extremely well developed sense of humour. I hope that second bit bit sound to sarcastic. In the future you should consider that maybe it's yourself with the humour disfunction and not "u people"" as I think most people would agree with me in stating that this is an excellent presentation.

  • it isn't meant to be a joke, adam is high lighting the stupidity of the bitish natural history museum. The audience are laughing because it was such a stupid discision to make, and i agree with him. why would any proffessional destroy the only remaining specimen of a dodo bird. so you'd be a little more accurate to say the english are stupid, even if it is rediculous and xenophobic. your only making yourself look more rediculous, so just please, stop your negativity is repugnant.

  • Haha! Yes, mavrick45, apparently there are enough trolls out there to turn anything positive (even something as awesome as this video) into a negative...and a negative based on bullshit at that! Lol @ humanity. OH THE HUMANITY!

  • Ahh but he forgot he is now a theft target ? Or Not ?

  • Whoo yeah what a talk and what a great guy

  • I am a surgeon and I want my copy of Jenna Jameson, any ideas?/ ROFL

  • that was great

  • you crazy bastard =O

  • This guy rocks.

  • Intro music is pretentious and annoying as HELL. GET RID OF IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • ... and deafening compared to the talking :(

  • if you havent already seen the maltese falcon, then you havent seen the maltese falcon, my favourite film with boggie, its on you tube so enjoy, enjoy, a classic classic

  • I love the frenetic energy of creative people obsessed with creation. :)

  • Creative obsession. Love it.

  • Other obsessions...self

Half of Ted Talks are about self-absorbed people in love with the way they think. The other half are pretty damn good.

  • If you took those reference images of the front back and sides, scan them, and convert them to greyscale, then use the topography of the greyscale image as a direct map to a 3d model, you could probably achieve something approaching the accuracy of scanning the original.

  • seems like the point of this talk was to brag.

  • the point was to show his obsessions and to show the pride and the detail of commitment he gave to his project and that that is what everyone should do, be committed and proud of the work they do. Not to brag or finally show off the finished work but the fun and love that it took to get to that point.

  • oh really? who are you? adam?

    let's examine the video.

he never offers anything other than point out the idiocy of the british museum. and show how cool he was to assemble a skeleton. what good is this? cache of bones, front piece, he's using big words.. conservator, obsessed by objects and the stories they tell. PUKE. who cares about your personal obsession? these talks are supposed to better man kind? this is a long winded uninteresting "look what I can do, mom!" rant. zzzzzzzzz.

  • I wish I had that kind of talent like Adam and yes lets examine the video he does talk about his the stuff that he is interested in. Yes he made a dodo but if you watch he isnt trying to get all the attention he can. All he is doing is showing how much he cares about the details and the journey it took to get to the end.TED talks are to better mankind in all shapes are forms not just in technology and science but all forms. If you didnt realize TED stands for Technology Entertainment and Design.

  • Wow a mythbuster giving a TED talk, I never thought I'd see the day

  • The ability to break through the cultural bias of contemporary societies, namely, positivism, is as I see it the great achievement of this video: Having a purpose doesn't mean to have a strict end [...]

    Priceless!

  • Great video. Its nice to see some other TED videos obsessing with changing the world or revolutionizing some form of technology.

Personal obsessions happen to all of us and it was interesting to see how this one unfolded.

  • This guy makes me feel hyper. My obsession is mj, i want to look at it and smoke it all day long

  • My obsession is handguns I want to look at them and shoot them all day long.

  • lol his mind jumps around so oddly...weird associations and stuff

  • What do you do with yours?

  • saving the world

  • ★★★★

  • ★

  • Wow. I am happy to share the planet with humans like this.

Thank God not everyone's as slap-dash as me. :-)

  • Before watching the video I thought hes only interesting on mythbusters and now I think hes interesting everywhere! 5/5

  • Amazing.

    Adam Savage, you are marvelous.

  • All right, now I have my own obsession confession.

I'm a fanatic about "The Maltese Falcon"

Anyone know anything more about the Nippenhauer (sic?) Hawk???

  • Wow, Adam is awesome! Huge respect!

  • i wonder how big his authentic porn collection is.

  • An awesome person. With an awesome mind.

  • I like his attention to detail. ★★★★★

    Katalyzt

  • i agree with Katalyt ★★★★★

but i still dont really get why the hawk was so important to people is it because it was in a movie? (dont say i'm dumb because i just dont know)

  • Whoa /... i am so like this dude. !!!!!!!! Yeah !

only my brain obsesses about other things.

Still , I get your brainwave Adam. cool shit.!

  • Plus at 14:29 he says, and I quote "I could fire a friggin lazer at it!!!"

    Nice Austin Powers prop there.

  • nice! didn't catch that at first lol

  • So, I've been an avid subscriber of TED now for the better part of two years here on youtube, even before I got my channel, I was watching TED. Now, I've never posted a comment for you, TED, but this one earns the proverbial cake.

2:39 into the video, Mr Savage shows a map of middle earth, and that he hand drew it himself....BRAVO.

I love you ted, really, I do. I mean, where else can you get gems like these. Keep it up, my interweb friends, you have my complete [non-monetary] support.

    Odius S.

  • ocd much

  • God, I wish I had that kind of dedication to fulfilling my creative ideas...

  • This man loves his work and i can see why. He has a lot of talent and ever so modest about it. Very nice work.

  • great ending

  • As someone once said, "Frenzy is its own reward."

  • That was just... wow....

  • hey isn't that the guy who stuck a fork in his butt and pics of it leaked on the internet?

  • 4:31

he just made cleaning my room 500% easier

  • Great talk! I can totally sympathize with that level of obsession when it comes to artistic endeavors... there's a special kind of madness involved.

  • WOW:-

    Cosmoline

    What Poetry!

    Nicely stated.

  • To be amazed, inspire, replicate, create, to seek, to find and to grow, that is what creativity is to me, although you can be original, sometimes the best things already exist, or wait to be made better. Adam's journey may seem silly to some, but what he described was a wonderful process of growing and learning, and his passions help him discover not only about what he is interested in, but also himself, and I hope we too can learn from this and follow his example, well... with more restraint...

  • this was amazing. no other words can describe it.

  • The process is the point. When I have reached my goal I typically sell off or toss whatever I spent so much time on. It no longer has any real appeal to me. A project is like the movie the bird comes from. The stuff that dreams are made of.

  • Whew.

  • Wow, I had no idea how deep the rabbit hole went.

  • Thats a whole different level of passion. Bravo!

  • That was simply amazing. The way his mind works is so great.

  • I am already in love w/this man's mind; I am relieved to see another extolling this perpetually-whiled firestorm of passionate discovery. This really cheers me up. Great Job, TED!

  • probably the OnLy person I would ever watch on tv if I ever had tv again.

    effing brilliance.

  • :P If it weren't for Mythbusters, the PBS Newshour, short films and my efforts at learning CG my poor TV would never get used.

Anyway, Adam Savage is one of the best parts of Mythbusters. He's a really smart person.

  • That was brilliant!!

  • Brilliant! This is the reason I subscribed, for talks like this.

  • Art, I know exactly how he feels.

  • comic relief

  • freakin brilliant

  • I really didn't know where this was going, but it ended perfectly.

  • Insane man! He deserves to be flogged! :-)

  • inspirational

  • ADAM SAVAGE!

    GOD OF THE GEEKS!

  • That's what you get when you're rich and have plenty time on your hands.

I like obsessions like that though.

  • This gave a whole new perspective of Adam Savage for me. His burning affection, not for the materialistic, bur for the achievement (as I see it) of creating/replicating an icon with his own hands. I can totally relate.. and his speach was however fast, a testiment to his dedication to receive his own goals. And in my world, that is what completes a human..

hmm.. that was rather deep.. :)

  • Excelllenteee

  • Adam is awsome

  • simply awesome...

  • Adam Savage

  • lol!!

  • I want that FALCON!

  • o-m-g

    HE HAS HAIR!!

  • I think that's just glued on from his dog.

    xD

  • He's quite a frenetic speaker. I like a lot of the ideas he talks about. I think it's important not to get too attached to material things, but at the same time, there is value in the enjoyment of such things.

I found myself in a situation where I had quite a few material things which I didn't need or use and needed to lighten my load as much as possible, so such things can actually be a burden if we're not careful.

  • Not my favorite TED Talk, but it held my interest. Kinda reminds me of the idea of the importance of play by Stuart Brown. This is the way Adam "plays" and it has driven him to learn and develop his artistic talent and intellect.

  • I understand his obsession. It's fun, makes you look forward to getting up in the morning, and feeds the mind. Sometimes doing something is it's own end.

  • Facinating and fun. The creative process is mostly about the process. At least this nut (me), doesn't feel he is as much of nut.

  • I love mythbusters, but I'm not sure if Adam is right, it's just another compulsive behavior, sure, it isn't a bad thing, but, it's still compulsive.

  • eternal or infinite quests...

    Obsessions feed obsession.

    blah....

  • myth confirmed

  • Mythbusters fucking rocks

  • That was absolutely fantastic! I geek bonded. LOL.

  • Haha, Adam is great. A great sculptur too I now found out :)

  • So cool

  • Kaw!

  • I don't get what is so special about that movie prop...

  • This guy must be stark staring mad. I heartily approve. XD

  • why is a raven like a writing desk?

  • Because one leg is both the same.

  • Fantastic, thought provoking conclusion there!

  • Adam in a corduroy sport coat... weeeeird...

    Awesome vid!

  • This is just like his talk at TAM 6, which was about replicating The Maltese Falcon. I don't find this talk, or the other one, at all compelling.

  • cool video i watch adam on mythbusters all the time the best show !PERIOD!

  • Narcissist!

  • This only goes to demonstrate my contention that absolute, unreasonable obsession is necessary to achieve great things. Well, whether a great thing is achieved here is debatable, but, uh, well, the guy is clearly obsessed, isn't he? And if he could turn that obsession toward something more, I don't know, useful, then he might achieve something great.

I'm glad that he is happy with his birds. :)

  • As a creative obsessive myself (I replicate videogames and improve on them, although I'm too shy to release most of my stuff.. :/) I know that you really don't want to force your creativity, as any interest in the subject is quickly killed this way. Once interest dies, so does pursuit of the goal.

When it works it's beyond control - I just need to hope that something useful comes out of it.

So far, it's gotten me a job.

  • Should be named 'quest for the falcon' there was very little dodo.

    Anyway. Pretty fascinating story.

  • i like adam. he's energetic and fun, even when it isn't perhaps the most meaningful ted talk, it was a great one.
