Marquez is a very spirited fighter. Excellent counter-puncher. Has superb punch placement. But his chin has consistently failed him. In most of his more significant fights (Barrera, Pacquiao, Mayweather, Katsidis) he has hit the canvas.
I would have to say that Morales is the best Mexican boxer of THIS era. He has the chin, the skills, the guts just like Marquez and Barrera...... but he also has a legitimate win over Pacquiao, the one guy neither of them could beat convincingly.

I do think the guy is a memorable world-class boxer, but he always tastes the canvas in the big fights, which makes it easier to score against him on the scorecards. He is resilient, but that doesnt remove the fact that he is prone to being knocked down.

This is the perfect example on why refs should not stop a fight in the 1st round. I've seen fights where one guy gets knocked down two or three times in the 1st round and the ref calls the bout over.

Marquez is a very spirited fighter. Excellent counter-puncher. Has superb punch placement. But his chin has consistently failed him. In most of his more significant fights (Barrera, Pacquiao, Mayweather, Katsidis) he has hit the canvas.
I would have to say that Morales is the best Mexican boxer of THIS era. He has the chin, the skills, the guts just like Marquez and Barrera...... but he also has a legitimate win over Pacquiao, the one guy neither of them could beat convincingly.

@gameboy010203 Sure.. yeah. In all of his high-profile match-ups, he's taken shots to the chin that results in him hitting canvas.... and eventually losing. Katsidis is the only exception. I do think the guy is a memorable world-class boxer, but he always tastes the canvas in the big fights, which makes it easier to score against him on the scorecards. He is resilient, but that doesnt remove the fact that he is prone to being knocked down.

Marquez is a very game fighter and by far an elite combination puncher, but his critical losses have always stemmed from him being prone to getting knocked down. If his chin was that of a Pacquiao or a Maidana, he would be comparable to Chavez Sr..... just my opinion.

@SuperPerfect5th When a "chin fails" you get knocked out. Getting knocked down is more a measure of balance being thrown off by the opponents power. One of the biggest mistakes of non fighters is the idea that a chin is no good if a fighter gets knocked down.

This is the perfect example on why refs should not stop a fight in the 1st round. I've seen fights where one guy gets knocked down two or three times in the 1st round and the ref calls the bout over.

@trplngzz Not on your life! It's much easier to see the merit in one fighters work over the other when the commentary team of a network are bias in their framing of the action. Jim Lampley, whom I have all the time in the world for as a blow-by blow commentator, was slanted toward Barrera in the majority of his observations, which were typified by his remarks surrounding the knockdown. Marquez clearly got the better of the action in what was a close and top class fight.
