Thank goodness that Shock and FremantleMedia (formerly Grundy) worked together and released the show on DVD some years ago in Australia, and are releasing them on DVD in the UK now too, so we can buy them online (and in stores like HMV) then we can watch our favourite prison drama whenever we want. :o)
That's terrible that some regions of ITV didn't either continue their second run of Prisoner like Central, or even their first run of Prisoner like Carlton. I am from London, which was the Carlton region, and they would, like some other regions I have heard about, broadcast episodes or not broadscast episodes whenever it suited them. And sometimes they would make us viewers wait for a couple of weeks, which happened around the 500's era of Prisoner back in 1996.
They did that here in America too. We saw season 1 in 1980, from 7 to 8PM on an independent station. Then, at the start of season 2, they put it on in the middle of the night, then took it completely off the air. I finally got to see all 692 episodes here on You Tube. Thanks to Gueen Bea, Uncle Muncher, GueenBeaAgain and several more.
I think it was about the usual prisoner time 12 midnight/12.30am. I wouldnt mind but from what i remember they replaced it with some stupid pointless programme. I think that they really was embarassed by Prisoners huge popularity in the U.K and maybe thats why they always gave it bad time slots etc.
Yeah the bastards lol they stopped showing it on the episode ending when Sharon Gilmoore had just been sentenced. I wrote to them and they said 'the audience had diminished' i had to collect the rest of the episodes from various people around the country.
I think that it had something to do with Carlton taking over Central at the start of 1995. I looked at the Sunday night schedules for January, February, March 1995, but it never returned. I do remember feeling tired all Monday morning at school because I was watching it the night before! Interestingly, the newspapers and TV listings magazines didn't list it as a repeat.
I do also remember that Yorkshire, who was the first region to start, was still on the Bea Smith episodes at that time.

Granada were very good with the show, with the last ever episode being screened in 1995.

I find that slightly hard to believe. Also, what time slot did they use for this repeat run?

I agree. Also a degree of snobbery because it was an Australian production.

Did Central actually start a repeat run, which stopped after 96 episodes?
