  • omg why why,, another shooter??? lol i love tg but damn

  • @lovelorn8888 Lol! Oh...just wait my friend. Ha ha. We didn't even scratch the surface yet! :) Thanks for watching.

  • @spida1a haha.... I love the TG man,,, was the first system I played when I was like 4 LOL yeah man maybe you would know.... some of my games look really bad, im not sure if its the RF switch or just how some of them games look... like the color looks really off... splatterhouse looks really bad on the 2nd boss fight.. maybe its RF switch???

  • Ahhh... the cute schmup with the Psychosis-like options. If Nec pushed these kind of games instead of others the consumers (except us : we were already sold!) may have laughed at Sega & Nintendo for accusing the system for being "8-Bit". Bad corporate practice aside, This is a gem that should be experienced by everybody, even in emulated form if one isn't able to do it the best way...

Aren't reviewing these kind of games awesome Chris?

  • This is my first time actually seeing a Turbo 16, really cool.

  • 1:30

  • @MrVitHp97 ??

  • You can leave Topsy and Turvy set to rotate around you the opposite direction you are pressing on the D-Pad, or locked in place like a shield like you said, but they can also be locked and set to fire in a set direction no matter what you press on the D-Pad, or locked and fire the opposite direction you are pressing on the D-Pad. This is important, and forgive me if you mentiond all these options. I'm a bit fahsnickered. Good review though.

  • @greedostick Thanks for watching. :)

  • the backgrounds are amazing - you'd think the turbo has 2 bg planes looking at this game, they pull it off nicely

  • @VBshredder Yes, totally. When they figured how to "manipulate" the backgrounds like that, it truly looked amazing. You know? Thanks for watching!

  • @spida1a no doubt- i was always secretly jealous of genesis back then for the 2nd background, but its also cool to see the programmers pull it off without it. seems a little more"special" that way. Parallax is by far my favorite eye candy from this era, ahead of scaling, rotation, etc. it just really brings games to life!

  • I Download An Emulator Of The US Version The Other Day On EmuParadise, But I Don't Know If It Works Or Not. I Haven't Tried It. Even The Complete Condition Copy Was Sold For $1,801.?? On eBay I Saw A Few Days Ago.

  • cool! thanks!

  • @jenenjisgarden Thanks for watching!!

  • The TurboGrafx totally passed me by - I guess it was more of an American/Japanese thing but this game looks really good. However, anyone thinking i'll be paying $500 for it anytime soon can jog on lol

  • @bluetonic78 I wouldn't pay a third of that for it either. Ha ha.

It is a shame they don't put it on Virtual Console so people can enjoy it. :)

    Take care.

  • Man, Coryoon and Magical Chase are 2 of my favorite shooters of all time. Too bad those 2 games alone would end up costing me at least $500 or so...

  • @snowcon3 Totally. I am so glad I was able to complete my Turbo collection in 2003. I definitely couldn't afford (nor would I want to pay) this game. :)

    Thanks for watching.

  • @thesentinelonline I totally agree. Love this one!

    Thanks for watching!

  • Where on earth did you find yours at?

  • @Marwarluigi I can't remember. Picked it up about nine years ago. :) :)

    Thanks for watching!

  • I Wish It Was On The Virtual Console Right Now. Because This Game Is Super Extremely Artifficialy (Artificialy ???) Hart To Hard Expensively RARE. Whoa! How Much Did You Pay For It On eBay?

  • This game really showed what the Turbo Grafx was truly capable of graphically and sound wise! :D

  • hey spida1a there is a spiritual successor to this game on the neo geo pocket color namnd cotton fantastic night dreams

  • @dde12321 It was also released on the Turbo Super CD as well. Good game! :) :)

    Thanks for watching!!

  • @spida1a

The game's name is 'Cotton' - Magical Chase was used because Quest licensed the original title to SNK for redistribution in American arcades. The reason for the lack of an ending is because, being an arcade game, it was animated and you can only find it on the Sega CD version - this is due to the memory limit of the Sega CD vs. The Super CD-Rom system.

As someone who (still) has never owned a Sony or Nintendo system in their life, STAY HARDCORE!

  • I did not have this game. I was'nt even aware that this game existed.

  • @jayce79 Thanks for watching!

  • The last auction for the US version ended at $2000.....wow!

  • @123doomdoom Hmm. Now you start to look at your collection and say "How bad do I REALLY want this anymore?" ha ha

  • @spida1a I don't have this game yet. But I have a pc engine duo, so I can settle for the cheaper pc engine version, which is around 150 dollars.

  • It's super rare game in Japan.

  • Who has the publishing rights to this? This one seriously needs to be released on Virtual Console.

  • Do you know that the Turbo grafx/ Pc-engine can only show one layer of background. This means that the layer over layer effect was not possible...But this game proves that the developers learned tricks to work around that limitation. That's what i like about the pc-engine...it that uniqueness.

  • @123doomdoom I am very thankful for those who figured out ways to create this "dimension" on the Turbo. Definitely.

  • When you said the game was rare, you weren't kidding...I was thinking I'd spend maybe around $100 or so for this game to complete my personal TG16 collection...saw it on ebay awhile ago go for two grand!

Oh well, I got Soldier Blade at least...

  • This game looks even better than many sega genesis games !?

  • Thanks for watching!!

  • why are you apologizing for killing the teddy bear, it tried to kill you.

also are you saying that the game is so good that even an emulator would work

  • Ha ha. You analyze the "jokes" way too much. :)

  • but I am right.

is what I said about the emulator true?

  • I think that it's really nice of you to reply to every comment on your videos, other people don't reply at all, but you reply to every comment and that's nice of you

  • Well....I try when I can to "reply." I really appreciate the friends I have made on here who watch the series.

What do you mean by "even an emulator would work?" I don't know anything about emulation so......I probably wouldn't be able to answer.

  • WOOOOWW this game is interesting, and the graphics wow they are like snes quality jajjajajja

  • They really did a great job with it. Thanks for watching!

  • It does look like a fun shooter, admittedly. Still, it being rare? Heh... sounds like something you would expect from a title published by Atlus USA!

  • Yeah, I enjoy it. :)

    Thanks for watching!

  • I saw this in an old game magazine and just remembered it when I saw your vid! It does remind me A LOT of Cotton! I just love these real quirky shmups!

  • Me too. There were a lot of PC-Engine "quicky" shooters that didn't even make it to the states. You know? I always loved them myself, too.

    Thanks for watching!

  • Awesome!! I have to get a hold of a PC-engine one day!! Thanks for your reply!! You have earned a sub to your awesome channel!!

  • Hey, thanks a lot. Glad to have you on board new YouTube friend. :)

  • Now if we can get this game ported to the Wii VC so a lot a people can play this game. This game reminds me of Cotton Fantastic Night Dreams for the Super CD which should also be reviewed and ported to the Wii. I think Cotton is the better of the two and with the Wii NES RetroPort I could give my NES Advantage a much needed workout playing them on Wii VC.

  • Cotton is a fun game too, yeah. Hopefully get to that eventually. Ha ha. :)

    Thanks for watching!!

  • this game looks excellent. i dont know much about the TG16 or is siblings so I'll sub your channel to learn about more games. Keep up the good work man!

  • Hey, great. Thanks a lot for watching and subbing. :)

  • I love the music for this game!

I even got hold of constantlimit's remixes of the tunes there (The only thing lacking is the first boss theme and the mid-boss rollcall), and I have them on my iPod! Always gives me a boost when I'm taking a walk!

It's a shame this game came out as late as in 1993, and the GameBoy Color port of this was only released in Japan.

Also, this game has an unused track, which is used in the GBC port.

  • It kind of reminds me of Keio Flying Squadron.

  • Great review of a great game. You are really good spida1a, you got more talent than some so called "professional reviewers", love your style and it was a great touch to include artwork from the games manual into the video. I also like that we can hear the music even when you are talking, music is to me a very important part of videogames, and many reviewers shut it of on their videos.

Great work, keep it up man!

  • Hey, thanks so much. I'm glad you enjoy them. If you haven't subscribed, please do as I am going to continue the series (eventually getting to all the American games......in say.....about ten years). LOL! :)

    Thanks again!!

  • yeah this is an awesome game. its the only emu I played for tg16. lol I thought i beat the game untill i saw this review since the emu was in japanese. oh well . Gotta save my cash.

  • Thanks for watching! :)

  • I keep coming back to this review over and over... partly b/c of the cuteness of the game but your review makes it sound like you're having so much fun playing it.

  • I totally am having fun playing it. I love this game. It's a shame that the game is SO expensive and a lot of people will never get a chance to play it. You know?

    Thanks for watching!

  • You are so lucky to own this game. I remember seeing it on the shelf at my local Electronics Boutique way back in 1993. I had a fleeting thought about buying it, but at the time I was so enamored with the SNES I ended up buying a Super Nintendo game instead! Big time regret!! I wish they'd at least release this game on Wii Virtual Console so I could play it. I used to think this game was related to COTTON for some reason.

  • I agree. I wish they would put this out for Wii. It is a great shooter! You know?

    Thanks for watching!!

  • those graphics are fantastic!

  • i just played this game on an emulator, since i dont have a turbografx, magical chase isnt on virtual console, and the game is really rare. but, DAMN IT'S FUN!!! my favourite shooter of all time.

  • Awesome! I really like the game as well.

    Thanks for watching!

  • Ended up getting the Japanese one due to the price and rarity of the U.S. one. The minor graphic changes are weird.

  • Yeah, I noticed that. Very strange. :)

  • oh this looks really nice, gorgeous graphics and fun gameplay.

I certainly won't sell my kidney for it but if I find it fairly cheap I'll pick it up.

  • No game is worth the money this game goes for. Period.

    It's really great though.

  • I havne't looked at the price yet so I wouldn't know :)

  • It seems like this game has parallax scrolling... I thought PCE/TG16 hardware was not capable (only Supergrafx was)... is that correct? Or is this some programming trick that makes it look like parallax scrolling? If it's true parallax, I wonder why more games weren't released with it. Turbo games are nice and colorful but suffer from the excessive one dimension-ness b/c of single scrolling.

  • There are a ton of games with multi-plex scrolling. But, from what I understand.....the programmers had to use "tricks in the software" in order to get it to work. It wasn't something that was capable right out of the box with the hardware, you know? :)

  • never heard of this before watching this video. Very cool!

  • Awesome! Thanks for watching!

  • Every time I watch one of these reviews it blows me away that the TG 16 wasn't more successful.

  • I just got the ROM and played it on Ootake. Very great game!

  • Wohoo! Sweet!

  • Well...i just purchased this game finally and it should be here in a few days, i rarely see the US version so i snagged it while i had the chance, but im ashamed to say how much i spent on it, its the most i have ever spent on a single game in my entire life and i have a sick feeling in my stomach, hopefully i'll feel better when im holding it in my hands,,ughhh

  • Did that go for over a grand?

  • no well below 1k, it was the hucard only so i paid a few hundred for it......:sob:

  • Ouch! Well, I hope you end up liking it. You'll blast through it quickly but MAN is it fun to play! :)

  • Worth it. Buck up, friend! Why make the money if you can't enjoy it?

  • This was one of my favourite TG-16 games. I never owned the Hu Card itself and always regretted not buying it when I did have the chance. Of all the sidescrolling shooters on the TG-16, this one I thought was the best, followed closely by 'Side Arms'

  • It's like Fantasy Zone to me. I would like to play this games! +_+

  • great review, i must have this game! Sounds like it will be mega expensive though, is it worth it ?

  • I love the game. Is it worth it for the money it fetches.......? No. No game is......in my opinion. You know?

But, that doesn't change the fact that I LOVE it as a shooter. :) :)

  • It's good to see a true retro gamer with the real deal hardware and software for once.... wanna trade this hu card for a U.S. mint version of Cotton for the duo?

  • Hey, awesome! Thanks so much for the compliments. I'm glad you enjoyed it.

Ha! Well, maybe Cotton + about four times as much money as Cotton goes for normally. :)

I already have Cotton, though. Thanks! :)

  • LOL that's kinda funny spida... Thankfully those days of Magical and Bonk 3 pushing 300+ are long gone... It's hard for them to get even near the 200 point in bid price anymore... I'd never sell Cotton myself as I play it quite often, cheers :)

  • LOL. Wow! I don't know what stores you shop in, but I know A LOT of collectors who would love a Magical Chase for anything under $400. Pass those along to me, that's for sure. I've never seen them anywhere near that $200 price point yet.

    Maybe some day. :)

  • LOL I've never seen them go anywhere near the 400 mark myself... send some links that have these at this price, recently anyway... are these "collectors" that pay 400 for these things the same guys that buy Florida swampland? HAHA.. better yet I know someone that has an extra copy that would gladly sell one for 400, send me the emails to these collectors willing to shell out and I will gladly put one in their hands, but only for 400...

  • Bonk 3 definitely doesn't fetch that kind of money anymore. But, Magical Chase on "Ebay" (mostly money hungry collectors who can afford it, LOL!) still regularly goes for around $400.

The links are dead now, but there were two toward the end of last year that went for $495 and $400 with just chip and manual (and they sold, not just some moron's overpriced buy-it-now). Hee hee! :)

  • what was the pacman game for turbo grafx 16 i wish i still had mine

  • I think you're thinking of Pac-Land, right? The side-scrolling (arcade port) that was similar to the cartoon that came out. It was fun, I'll get to that one too. It was one of the first games I ever got for the system myself. :)

  • wow man i cant believe hoe AWESOME THIS LOOKS!! MUST....Play....Magical CHASE!!!

  • Was this released in the U.S. or is it import only.

  • It was released in the US. That is the version that I reviewed.

  • Wonderful review Chris - loved the little pieces of humor you put into it and attention to detail. Keep up the great work!

  • Thanks! :)

  • This game looks sooo fun. Reminds me of the Cotton series :D

  • It's has some very distinct similarities. :)

  • Every time I see a review, I love the recognizable intro music. Another great review-- and wow! You've gone above 4 chips, haven't you!? Great :D

  • LOL. One day the theme song will be on some YouTube Favorite Themes compilation. Hee hee! ;) Not many will get the elusive five out of five......but MC came close, love this game!

  • Whoo-hoo! Another great video review! Thanks for reviewing all of these TurboGrafx games; I wouldn't have the money to do so myself!

  • Never knew that game was so rare, wow. Seems like a fun game though, great review once again!

  • Another f***ing masterpiece! :)

  • I just found out recently that the Japanese call those levels where you fight all the previous bosses in succession a "boss rush" stage.

But good review, have you ever played the Japanese version as well? surprisingly different game!

  • I've never played the Japanese version but I have heard that there are some differences. Some say that the US version is actually better. True?

  • From what I recall the US version had a lot more parallax scrolling than the Jap version.

  • yea a review of a game I will never own

looks fun I might have to go to your house and take it.

  • Ha! It's locked away and buried, you'll never find it. Hee hee!

  • amazing review and wow $500 with no box thats a lot you were lucky

  • LOL! Yeah! Thank goodness I'm not a "I need the box" collector or else.....I'd be BROKE! :)

  • this game looks awesome!!! especially the Jason voorhees snowman at 4:18!!! great review btw 5/5

  • I may be wrong but this game was ported to the early PCs also if I want to remember right... I know that psychosis were on the PC also

  • Another great review - keep up the quality material! How much those chips sell for?

  • The last one on Ebay I saw with manual and game (no box) went for over $500. Luckily, I bought mine back in 2003 for considerably less than that.......whew, glad I jumped on that a while ago. :)

  • Wow - thats huge!

  • The price for this one is just insane I know. Cool review and the game reminds me a lot of another Turbo shooter called Psychosis although this one plays better.

  • Psychosis is great, yeah. I love that one. :)
