Shanahan, competition is fine, as long as there is some decency and decorum. However, when your passion overcomes your ability to reason, showing your ass in public, is NOT "showing how much you care about everyone is the room". Bill, as a debate coach you should know you can't have it both ways. First you claim it's not about winning or losing and it's not about a 3.0 or 2.1. However, when the black gentleman in the middle of the room stressed that it's all about fleshing out ideas and learning from the sharing of different viewpoints, you insist that it's all about "the framework of competition" and it's the competition that matters. You claim no one would come to listen if it were just to hear diverse ideas.

There is a connection. Chomsky wrote a popular book called, "Hegemony or Survival". He uses it a lot in speeches too. It's a good five-dollar word! Consequently, my allusion is sensical. Chomsky did not invent the word, neither was he the first to use it, nor was he first to reference it in literature. Shallowness or "flippancy" can only describe this if it were a monologue with a purpose of arguing or debating a topic. Besides, competitive debate (as opposed to, arguably, political debate) has nothing to do with discovering a correct answer--hence the requirement that you debate both sides. It is an art of rhetoric.

It's a great thing that people like Bill Shanahan exist, and debate has been much better off over the years because of it. His conduct in those eight minutes was execrable, but I've learned a lot from him over the years, as have most who have interacted with him. Don't judge him by his worst eight minutes. He loses it sometimes, but that's part of his personality. What he does best is make people think.
