Bluegrass is a mixture of African/Irish/gospel. White and black people worked in the fields and mines of the Appalachian mountains and played music together. Listen to the interviews of famous old bluegrass musicians one would easily count off as "rednecks" they're the first to tell you about it's roots and great bluegrass players are some of the least prejudice people you'll meet.
Early rural string bands and country blues musicians also had a great impact on the bluegrass repertoire. An easy example is: John Henry, a folklore story and song within the country blues tradition, would further lend itself to the popular bluegrass song Nine Pound Hammer.
Beautiful, haunting, and hypnotic! You can see how bluegrass came directly from Africa. The ekonting is definitely the ancestor of the banjo. It sounds like a sparkling, flowing river.
Informative and entertaining. The man has serious talent.
I have been studying the dispersion of cultures and artifacts through Africa and beyond for some time now. I can see the direct relationship of the akonting and banjo. I am also looking at that bridge and thinking of the donso ngoni and kora. The seed is right there.
The more I am learning about African music, the more I still want to learn.

The traditions that formed roots music carry such deep history that we're still trying to figure it all out,
