  • That's a great tip. And a very good explanation using the phone company example. I was under the misconception that choosing a hosting company that offers a domain name too would be a real time saver and would save me the inconvenience of transferring domain names access from one company to another.

  • Another serious con of having your domain name and hosting service together is that in even initiating a domain name transfer to a different registrar the hosting service you are currently with, upon knowledge of this can decide to completely nullify the domain, deleting several hours of work . That situation is disastrous especially if no back up was kept.

  • I see a lot of disagreements with this video, and I can see where its coming from. Speaking from personal experience of having a separate hosting company and a domain registrar the only reason I did that was to not put all my eggs in one basket, not because of being locked in. However if you are not internet savvy you might get locked into extending your domain + hosting when you only wanted to renew only 1 of those services. (more work/time consuming for you to opt out)

  • It is ideal to have a separate domain registrar from your web hosting service because it gives you that flexibility to switch between the two if one or the other is merely generating more problems for you as opposed to accomodating you with a good service. It also helps you manage things better. Not to mention, save more money than you would with the same hosting service and domain registrar.

  • Using two separate domain registrars and web hosting services saves you tremendously in terms of power to choose the type of service desired. It allows you to be flexible and change service in terms of bandwidth related issues and gives you power to switch over to another provider who can provide a better service.

  • I actually completely agree with Timur's approach to this situation. The services offered now by hosting websites are very flexible and are renewed on either monthly or an annual basis. You are not compelled to stick to one host, since all the material belongs to you and you would have already backed the information on your own personal server. The hosting site cannot withhold such information as ransom, not to mention the relatively cheap switching costs.

  • A reason to keep domain and hosting names the same is help you manage things better and to eliminate confusion for the client/customer. People are used to seeing and dealing with one company for hosting and domains so this may create some fuss and confusion. It will be easier to market one company name and people generally feel more comfortable working with one company. Also, if you need help/technical support, then your contacting one company, not two.

  • This video is very informative as I was not aware of keeping hosting service separate than registration. When i bought my domain from go daddy, their rates looked amazing and did not realize that I should have kept them separate. However, what my concern is that usually cellphones companies like rogers, telus offer amazing plans with their low-cost phone hence they 'lure' customers in. Those amazing plans are almost unbeatable. I find companies like godaddy and other provides do that too.

  • The analogy of being "locked in" like in cell phone providers really helps. I actually thought it would be the opposite but I understand how that could be a problem. I have to ask though is that the only disadvantage of being with the same hosting provider, I mean, aren't there a lot of benefits of being with your hosting provider that could bypass this disadvantage?

  • Having a separate domain registrar and host is important, because by keeping them together can end up costing you a lot more. Also you may end up in a contract, where you would be stuck with that company for a certain amount of time. Also, if you keep the registrar and hosting together, and the company goes bankrupt, it can cause a lot of problems getting set up again. However, if its kept separate, it wont be as difficult.

    Jasmeet D- MGD415

  • I would also rather have web hosting and domain registration with two different providers. It doesn't have any disadvantage and as already mentioned you have more privacy and you can't be scammed that easily. At least I haven't heard of any problems with two different providers so far.

  • I’d never think that keeping domain name registration from the hosting services will be a terrible thing until I watched this video. I had registered a domain name from a “free” hosting services for my networking class and the most thing bothering me is that they keep sending me email.Ididn’t had that problem yet probably because I did not put a lot of big files inside. I think I can share this video to my other friends whoare going to host a domain name in hosting services.

  • I never realized that there was such an issue with getting a domain name & hosting from the same provider was such an issue. I find this topic very relevant to me considering I had to buy a domain name from godaddy.com for another class assignment within the last week. We were taught all about buying domain names but not the issues from getting hosting from the same domain registrar. But it makes sense now to keep the 2 separate, therefore your not locked into a contract.

    Ameerah R. - MGD415

  • It's very true that you should keep your domain name and hosting service separate. The hosting service can lock you into a contract and it may become difficult to switch to another service (similar to the cell phone provider example). With more and more companies coming out, you can find cheaper rates. For instance, with new cell phone providers such as Wind providing cheapter rates, many people can't switch over because they are stuck in a contract with Rogers or Telus.

    Kerndeep S. - MGD415

  • I wish I had this information when I purchased my domain name and hosting services. It is from the cheap combination that makes this partnership quite attractive. I think like all things in life, you need to simply do the research. I can completely agree though that by having separate domain and hosting services can give the individual more options and flexibility.

  • READ THE CONTRACTS BEFORE HAND KNOW WHAT YOUR GETTING INTO...Sorry i need to stress that because if your buying a domain name and tying your self into hosting or getting a cell phone and tying yourself into rogers or bell, you need to know what your limits are. Why have a domain name thats yours and not be allowed to do what you want with it.

    Peter S

  • This makes a perfect sense. If I want to have a domain name, I want to have 100% control over it and registering a domain and hosting it with a same company will definitely eliminate my control over my own domain name.

  • I never realized getting the domain name and hosting service from the same provider can be such a huge issue. Most of the time we tend to get all we need from one place for convenience but apparently it can prove to be more trouble.

  • I don't think purchasing hosting from your name provider is inherently a bad thing, but just like everything else, you need to know what you're getting into. Whoever provides the best services related to your site should be chosen, regardless of who you bought the name from.

I found a website that compares name and hosting services, but Youtube doesn't allow links in comments, I'll send it to you by email.

  • Buying a domain register and hosting service is a problem because it may not be a benefit to you. The reason is because you may not like the hosting service provided to you and can get better bandwidth costs i.e. I understand the difference but it would make sense to give benefit for registering your domain name and hosting you're helping the company out. For example rogers has Rogers bundles for having the same television and mobile service giving you a discount

    Anselm T - MRK619

  • I did not realize this could be such a big problem. Your analogies are very easy to understand and now I do see how this can become very costly and sometimes problematic. I also did not realize that you can come across domain transferring and ownership issues as well. I guess in a sense it is like a cell phone contract, or any contract as a matter of fact (which at this point in my life I am aware you must watch out for). Thank you for the good advice WTGR.

  • Don't put all your eggs in one basket why?

By having a domain registrar and hosting service as one company, you will be locked in and unable to switch if your website starts to increase traffic. And increased traffic increases the data that is being sent from the hosting service to the visitors. And in the end you'll have to pay more than you initially signed up for. Once again, sneaky.

    J Davies MRK619

  • By separating ones hosting service from their domain name register, allows better flexibility and options. This way you can look at different hosting services to see which one provides the best offers that suits your website. For example, hosting services may charge you more money with increase traffic on your site. If you are obligated to one hosting company this will create difficulties to switch and end up costing money as the demands of the website changes.

    Maggie N.

    MGD415

  • This definitely presents a conflict of interest . Since the hosting service is also the provider of your domain name, as a registree, you are more susceptible to being locked in to premium fees, and losing content hosted on that domain name if you opt for an alternate hosting service. It is more beneficial as a registree to keep your domain name and hosting services separate to circumvent issues regarding the hosting service charging more for providing the same service.

  • yes, it is the "getting locked in" part that i am shy about

  • I still disagree. This outlook is outdated. Firstly, you could by all kinds of services for any period, some services its even monthly. Ultimately, you need to choose a hosting service that allows convenient use, reliable service and has a bunch of sub-services that you can buy. For e.g: blog service, shopping cart system etc. The ONLY possible argument against even going into a telephone plan (ultimate prices on telephones) is being locked. This is really inapplicable today...

  • thats true! always use 2 different service providers because you wanna be on the safe side. if anything - you can easily switch and your website wont vanish with all the work you've out into it. I wish we could do the same with cell phone companies.

  • Registering your domain name with a different company then your hosting service is the only way to protect yourself against cancellation charges, and allows you to switch companies if you find a better rate.
