  • I was born in 89 and for some reason I find these 80s commercials fascinating and awesome

  • That McDonald's commercial ``the New Kid'' was probably the most heart wearming Mickey D's commercial I have ever seen. Seriously that was really sweet. They sure don't make `em like that anymore , huh?

  • @Retrofanatic10 I found it a bit depressing. the guy's retired already and now he's taking some shitty fast food job.

  • @Lmaox94 If that's how you look at it , then that's pretty shallow. I don't care if it's Red Lobster or Outback , it's not about the food , it's about the message of the commercial. I look for the underlying message , not what the commercial is trying to sell ( which I have the choice to buy or not to buy ).

  • I'm sure someone driving a Trans Am or Firebird really cares about a Volkswagen Golf!!!

  • He better be careful with that phone....could take someone's eye out 7:44

  • EFFICIENCY EXPERTS, COOL COMAPANY BROS

  • 4:06-:09 yikes!

  • @daddygreenjeens Well, the 80s was when AIDS was no longer a "homosexual disease," but was starting to spread through the heterosexuals.

  • The world would be a better place if they had breakfast at McDonald's for 24 hours a day.

  • @MattTheSaiyan I think allowing people to buy Egg McMuffins at any time of day or night might have some unforeseen consequences. Down would be up, black would be white...panic and hysteria would quickly engulf the streets of America. Not to mention the inevitable muffin, cheese, egg and ham shortages and the violent riots that would ensue.

  • ...y'know, I kinda miss phones. Regular phones, I mean. These cellphones are great, sure, but those big phones were so much easier to hold on your shoulder when you're doing something (or if you just want to give your arms a rest).

That "new kid" commercial is pretty sad. I know older people at our local fast food joints (and grocery stores) that have to work that job in order to buy medication. ...when this was made that seems to have been out of the ordinary. How sad for old people today...

  • The most interesting thing about watching these old commercials is seeing all the products that have come, gone and long since been forgotten within my lifetime. Sticklets, Bounty candy bars, Pur-tenders just to name a few.

  • Commercial #1-How in the hell does, wake up someone get out of bed, get dressed, tie a tie, be ready for work, and hop a bus 18 mins. later? Did he shower and shave before bed and mainline some Jolt upon waking????

  • Commercials in the 80s were pretty stupid, but I still much prefer them to the loud, obnoxious, smarmy crap on TV today.

  • 4:20..... that old man is so adorable....unfortunately this is not how fast food industry works.....but it should work like this. :)

  • "LOOK HOW GOOD YOU LOOK NOOOOOOOWWWWW!!!"

  • Kathy Ireland was already famous in 1987 for being on Sports Illustrated for 3 years by then. It looks like a young Reese Witherspoon who would have been 10-11. The big hair and lighting makes her look older but, it is the rolling eyes look she gives the sandwich at the very end that ids her. It is the same look she gives in most of her movies. She did start modeling and commercials at 7 so, it is possible. What do you think?

  • @TheEmilyRoseShow Um, that's clearly not an 11 year old girl, and it's definitely not Reese Witherspoon. I tend to agree with the poster who pegged it as Mary Catherine Stewart from "Weekend At Bernies".

  • "The New Kid" ad nearly brought me to tears; however, I've never ever in my whole life seen an old person in fast food who moved that quickly. Also, is the girl at 4:57 the older sister from the movie "Man in the Moon?"

  • You got to feel sorry for the army, the marine ads of the 80's were just so much better. One had you doing stuff before 9:00 am, the other you were stopping dragons and evil wizards from ruling the world.

  • That old guy got home and what you didn't hear was "I made almost seventeen whole dollars for five hours' work!" (min. wage in 1987: $3.35/hr)

  • Huh, for some reason my computer stops this at 1:09.

  • McDonald's - "Breakfast For 4" (It'd be awesome if these guys had a sitcom where did literally nothing but sing in unison all of the time)

    I agree wholeheartedly.

4:19 "Hey Bill, wanna go see shit?" j/k, I know it's 'fishing', but it took me about 5 times to realize it.

    P.S. Breakfast by the hand!

  • @foxxyloxx

McDonald Breakfast made me who I am today.

    250 lbs of Breakfast

  • Night Rider wanted a piece of that VW Golf.

  • March 13th, 1987-the day both Evil Dead 2 and Raising Arizona came out!

  • Sorry, can't help you with naming the actress in the last McDonalds commercial. She was cramming that sandwich in her mouth so much it was hard to get a good look at her face.....

  • Jeez, all that first commercial did for me was wishing for a breakfast muffin. And I wish that McDonnald's would sell breakfast 24 hours a day. 80sCommercialVault, I've been enjoying your uploads for the past few days.

  • These ads were probably filmed during the first and last hour of sunlight...often called the "magic hour" or "golden hour" by cinematographers.

Because these commercials in particular are advertising breakfast at McDonalds, it was almost certainly an intentional choice. I can kind of see it in other ads, but it's definitely not as prominent as it is here.

Also, a few of my tapes tend to have kind of a yellow tint to them...either because of age or the broadcast quality back then.

  • The ad implies that a VW Golf will outrun a TransAm.

  • haha gotta love the 80s

  • Fuck! 12 dollars to see the dentist!

  • and and the ending to it is so tacky 0_o

  • "Men, they never stick around"... There's something you'd never hear in a commercial today. What the F#$!@#$@??

  • Great video! Anyone know the beer commercial featuring Magic Carpet Ride song by Steppenwolf? Early 80's

  • RE: chick in MCDonald's Hands commercial...she does look like Kathy Iremand, but she also looks like Kelly Preston. Both women were already making movies by 1988 (although low-budget), but I guess a paycheck is a paycheck!

  • Upon further review- I think this might actually be Kerri Green (from Lucas, the Goonies, etc)

  • Hmm, warmer. I don't think that's her though.

I think it might just be some unknown actress that happens to look like every other cute 80's girl.

  • Looks like Catherine Mary Stewart (the chick in Weekend at Bernie's)

  • No, it's a group from Chicago called Four Guys Standing Around Singing. They were essentially Chicago's Rockapella.

  • Oh, like those people in those commercials don't know Comtrex uses hidden cameras! sigh

  • It seems McDonald's commercials were longer back in the 80s. I think that is Kathy Ireland at the end of the last McDonald's commercial. I wonder if she spit that bite out after the director said cut.

  • Why is KITT stalking women in VWs?

  • The Loreal commercial...........................I will admit to you, I have been looking for this commercial for a VERY LONG time! I remember always seeing it back in 1987. I never thought I'd see it again. And, I always thought the music and the way they were waving at the end scared the shit outta me.

  • Back when joining the Army was just a career move...

  • Meg Ryan at the end in the McDonald's commercial... ?

  • No. She was already doing movies/TV at this point.

  • breakfast by the hand indeed. i remember most of those commercials.

  • I wish McDonalds would still make their commercials the way they used to. That New Kid commercial is sort of sad, but very heart warming.

  • dude .. the old man working at McDonalds is fuckin sad

  • Cool!! 2 Days B4 I was born. The 80's totally rock!!!

  • This guy lived through the Great Depression and two world wars, yet he gets to spend his golden years slinging sausage and egg biscuts... Poor, poor "New Kid".

  • I was three months old when these commercials aired. LOL.

  • i want that lamp!!! lol

  • All of the McDonald's commercials are classics in the sense that they're so damn catchy, but my favorite was actually "The New Kid" one because it so damn sweet.

You're right Mike, the sax was so cheesy but oh so good.

  • ok again, just not right! did anyone else catch the fact that one of the Dr's in the South Bay commercial shares his name with one of the inventors of the modern day zombie? and yes thats kathy by the way, i should know i had a crush on her most of my teenage years ( what teenage boy didn't).

  • The McDonalds quartet commercial reminds me of Ted's band on Scrubs....

  • So Im really into these old commercial blocks, and noticed all the McDonalds and Burger King spots. Out of the 40 volumes so far, only about 10 or so have absolutly no fast food ads.

This one seems to be a record with 5 McDonalds commercials, but thats makes sense seeing the post about the program being sponsored by them.

Awesome job putting this together, gonna move onto the 90's volumes.

  • Isn't it funny how back in the 80's like every other commercial was 4 mcdonalds, & that each one of them had 2 have some corny story line behind it?

  • The show I recorded these from was sponsored by McDonald's. That's why there are so many McDonald's ads.

  • if the volkswagen commercial makes you feel any better. They were singing beach boys.

  • "Little GTO" was by Ronnie and the Daytonas actually.

  • ah, well you knew what I meant. The beat was of a familiar song.

  • damn was "oh ya" in every commercial in the 80's? i heard it in a mcdonalds commercial as well. Yello prob still rake it in from that song.

  • yeah- the mcdonalds commercial... they probly wouldn't dare do something like that these days because it's become an ugly reality- that people just can't afford to retire. maybe it wasn't as bad in those days. i wouldn't know, i was just a kid. great commercials, though! i laughed so hard at the Avon one- 'look how good you look now' or something? LOL! they really put some thought into that one ;-)

  • Maybe I'm just naive, but whenever I watched this commercial growing up, I always just assumed the old guy wanted to keep busy in his old age, not take some minimum wage job simply for the money. Some old people think retirement is a quick way to grave.

And I think McDonald's is still in the practice of hiring elderly folks for shifts in the morning, just like the guy in this commercial, but I'm not sure.

  • Yeah, I agree with retirement being a quick way to the grave. Les Paul is 93 and still plays weekly at a club in NYC with his band. He said himself if stopped gigging and retired he would have been dead 30 years ago.

  • I agree. Les Paul is a living legend and is responsible for creating in my opinion the greatest guitar of all time.

  • McD's does hire older people for morning cashier jobs because each store seems to have its share of elderly regulars. Too bad they stopped making fresh biscuits; now they just arrive frozen in paper trays.

  • That's not Kathy Ireland at the end. Kinda looks like Jenny McCarthy though.

  • Wow it's like my grandfather working at McDonalds. How sad is that? Welcome to life in America.

  • Hey, some people want a part time gig after they retire, just to keep busy...

    Great commercial...

  • A commercial about an 80 year old working at McDonald's oh Please

  • An old guy who is so thrilled to be working, in a McDonald's nonetheless, is just sad.

  • I see that commercial as less of an advertisement for McDonald's and more of a warning to plan ahead for retirement.

  • The singers in #7 were actually a real group based in Chicago. Would have been a really funny sitcom!

    Nice finds.

  • The McDonald's "New Kid" commercial is actually really, really sweet. It almost made me tear up.

  • sad !!!

  • i love the avon commercial!!!

  • Hey that looks like Rockappella from Where In The World Is Carmen Sandeigo.

  • 1:30... the Volkswagen GTI has 16 valves??? Jeez... those days are LONG gone lol

  • It seems a bit excessive until you remember that gas was only around 95 cents then.

  • That's exactly what I mean

  • The music in the Sunnyvale Ford commercial is more suited to a giant anime robot attacking a city.

  • McDonald's ads are really depressing...

    1 => a workaholic

    2 => a 80 yo guy working at mcdonald's

3 => a mailman having breakfast with his daughter at work...

  • lol

it's like "OK! We get it McDonald's! Theres breakfast there!"

  • McDonalds was really pushing breakfast in the 80's!

  • They're still pushing the importance of breakfast even now.

  • Haha, I love the little parenthetical comments in the description.

  • I Heard Breakfast by the hand 11 times.
