@ForgottenFaces001 i no and scooby doo corrupted Sean Paul i hate those nursery rhyme rid-dims so pants lol i only listen to stuff that was made before the 90s theres some nice lovers tunes around but that dancehall stuff hurts my head to much think its been made 4 crack heads or summut pmsl what tunes you in2?there used to be sound systems every week at a park near me i loved it saxon sound played there and stone love u visited dat piff site there's some good old school & revival mixes there
@babycat967 i am only 28 so when the good sound systems were rocking i was only 4 years old and not old enough to attend, but i like to listen to people like david rodigan, gemini sound systems, firehouse crew, yellow man, sister nancy genral degree, stone love is still a good crew, and there are a couple of good selectors and DJs that work for passa passa but of course i am not all that interested with thing like passa passa. there are good current artists they are just not as many
@ForgottenFaces001 im 35 so i was 11 then and just starting to bother about music my dad tortured me with dexies midnight runners come on eileen lol i my 1st tape was reggae hits 7 and that was quite commercial to me back then it had the track with greggory in it and that women it went i left hairdressers about 3;30 go look some pill 4 me old lady it didnt make sense cus then it said by the time me get ready its past 1;30? lol
MI GOD MI KING-Papa Levi.. can find it pon im LP or Compilation lp REGGAE Greats:the DJs..great 70s /80s djs:U ROY ,DILLINGER,BILLY BOYO,PAPA MICHIGAN+GENERAL SMILEY AND MORE...Ras-Tafari
I remember me and my mates buyin homemade tapes from a Dread in Walthamstow market! Saxon, Shaka and Lion's den? So what youre thinkin? We were all white teenagers!
LOL! Wow!! Are you talking about the Dread that had the little stall in between two shops down a little Ali-way?? I remember that's where I got my first tape from: Stone Love Vs Metro Media!!! Brings back memories. Think I was about 5 or something like that
im guessing you were looking for the spandex wearing heavy metal band Saxon during their 80s period and accidentally came across this judging by your intelligent comment.
This actually could even be a little bit later, possibly even the mid-80s. Crowds went crazy for Saxon and their MCs back then. And no, this is not considered "rocksteady", oxalicman, but would be considered early dancehall. Rocksteady music rose to prominence in the mid-1960s, and would be kind of like the bridge between what we know as mento/blue beat/ska music, and the reggae/rasta music that would really become popular around 1970.
This is an important piece of black british reggae culture! I am so glad that it is here for all generations to fulljoy and make the connections from the beat, full circle UK, Jamaica, Africa!!!
The whistles continued on into into rave culture in the late 80s early 90s with the added bonus of the air horn. Get one of them in ya ear you know about it!
You're not? Coxone was around back in the late sixties - even my parents used to go Coxone. Then Jah Shaka took over as 'the baddest' from mid-seventies onwards.
Saxon (and I personally know Dennis Rowe, Musclehead, etc) were good and very exciting for a younger teenage generation of ravers in the 80s. Respect to Saxon for bringing on good DJs and Maxi Priest, but to compare them Saxon with Coxone is laughable.

Brilliant!! A few weeks ago i was given a downloaded Reggae cd, and I just love`Mi God, Mi King` but had no idea as to the artist. You have just made me very happy. Any idea if i can get `Coughing up Fire` cd? If so where? Many thanks.
One thing any one who studies the history of dancehall and Toasting must have to acknowlege that Saxon Dj's raised the standard of toasting to another level. If you doubt me (smile) Check out most of DJ music from JA between 1980 to 1984 and you will not believe how poor in construction their lyrics was compare to Papa Levi and Tipper Irie. Only later on Peter Metro and Johnny Ringo who adapted the Saxon style, matched them. So give saxon the world of respect they deserve.... Big Up !!!!
My friend I will agree with what u saying but to say RINGO adapted this style from the saxon guys is wrong. Ringo had this kind of "Coherent style" with a mix of the yard english version when he joined Gemini.
Used to have nuff of these dances @ my old school 'Upton House' in 'Hackney' back in the early 80s...Wicked!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am sure this is late 1984/85. Ithink the sound and lyrics were a their peak at this time - never tire of listening to it.

This is the beginning of rap I guess? Good video. It came from rocksteady isnt it? In fact what songs are 'rocksteady'

The beginning of rap goes back further than this my friend, toasting has been going on alot longer than Papa Levi.
