  • Hi mate ..wondering if yu could help us out if your experiance. i want to use a CPU

Intel Celeron D 3.06GHz 775 socket with 1gb of ram. will his be powerfull enugh to stream to video files to ...2 diffrent computers ?also i only want to use 1 hard drive and iv heard freenas 7 can curupt the hard drive and you lose all your data. have you ever had this problem ? i really cant lose all my 300 odd g films lol

  • @petegrimsby Doubt it will be powerful enough. While I've had good luck with FreeNAS even the creators tell you to make backups. It's not just the software that can fail.

  • @petegrimsby and @Thaed too !! ...sorry Thaed, but I actually would tend to believe it would be powerful enough to do this (assuming a 100 Mb network speed ) : we're talking reads from HD sent to network here ! ..and I have read about setups on PIII computer with several drives ! so just go ahead man and give it a try !! ...regarding the data corruption, I dont know anything, good or bad, about it.... in anyway , good luck!

    regards,

    Mart_Mtl

  • I plan on doing this with an old athlon 1800+ pc. My network on that motherboard is 100. How much would that limit the speed of my NAS? Should I put a gigabit card in to increase the speed?

  • @myriadcorp If you do, get CAT6 cable too. It will increase the speed somewhat.

  • i had that case, its fucking terrible

  • too much talking

  • A very critical step is missing. You did not cover how to set this up so that other computers have access to it. It is not as "brain dead easy" as you said. It is not simply plugging it into a wireless router and bam every PC on your router can access it.

  • @eighteenman18 Sounds like your the man for the job. We will all be waiting for your video response to this.

  • coool

  • i need help with freenas!!! how did you get feenas to work???

  • i need help with freenas!!!

  • FWIW one of my servers runs OpenBsd, the small boot drive has been in it for over 5 years running 24/7 it was old when I put it in! Maybe a viable solution for you to use a small IDE hard-drive for boot etc... it can be worth removing the video card too, some are a little power hungry! Since I no longer need all the functionality of that server I may go the FreeNas route with it too...

  • Did you know that by taking out these cards (and especially the video card) would result in a much lower power consumption? I tried this out and noticed a great difference on my power meter! Of course, you have to set the BIOS setting "Halt on" to "No Errors" first to prevent a rejected boot process hence the video beep code.

  • @Bandicoot803 Sorry I commented before I read your post, you are right on both points, same applies to my OpenBsd server, runs without video card or keyboard.

  • hi there my name is marcus i am trying to put freenas on my old window computer i do every thin u say and it is still not working

ps i do not no what is going on when i remove the cd from the cd drive it is not booting up with freenas

now i did opition 3 from the install menu and then every thing is fine and all but when i do every thing els then reboot there is no file or anything on computer

with out the cd it is not doing any thing please help

  • @HPKWI Marcus for this version, the cd stays in! If you want to see how to do a USB drive version, watch my 8TB video. For more tech support, go to the forums on the freeNAS site. Google freeNAS and follow the links. Good luck!

  • were do i get freenas software from

  • This machine is using FreeNAS version 0.686. Check out my new video that I uploaded today on building an 8TB server.

  • sir, what version of FreeNAS is that?

  • no that won' t instal it only gave failt or error, when it load the cd

  • i have a 1,4 GHZ AMD,512mb ram and a 40 gb harddrive, when I boot from the freenas Cd, he begin to loads, no problem butt then i don't see the picture of free nas. when i have instal the software i cant come in the free nas OS. he is going to boot again, butt than not from the cd. What is wrong? i am using the FreeNAS-i387_0.686 The the up to date version does the same as this older one.

  • have u installed freeNAS?

  • do you have the amd64 version...

  • Hooray a freenas demo by santa clause!

  • if you dont know what a server is ... its basicly a dedicated computer to host a service of some sort.

  • a server delivers a service or services

  • a server can either be, game server, email server, storage server, network server + others , just google it

  • A server is a powerful computer that lets hundreds of other computers connect to it to provide services. Youtube is a fileserver. It provides a free ervice to store and view vids!

  • how does the terabyte work and can it make your computer faster and make more space?

  • 1 Terabyte is 1000/1024 Gigabytes. In this case he's talking about hard drive capacity.

  • Comment removed

  • Actually it equals 1024 gigs

  • Oh thanks :)

  • nice with the 4TB!! i've only got a 40GB and 160GB drives!

  • fans were loud lol.

  • id rather spend that 100 bucks on better hardware then spending it on a flashy case to be honest, looks aint all that important, now when u get to buying a screen thats another story :P

  • acctually i can go to this really cheap computer store and buy a 10 in. CRT for 15USD

  • nice ...

But i would not use silicon image for sata controller. i had very bad experience with one old sil 3112...

  • agreed.

if you arent going to spend $400+ on a proper hardware controller like a 3ware e.t.c. might aswell just go software raid as it does not depend on the controller just the o/s implementation.

  • I liked this video. Very good informatiion.

  • Interesting video but could you please sound like like you actually interested in what your doing?

  • Bleh...what is he supposed to sound like? Frankly I find it pretty refreshing he doesn't act like all those EXTREME!(tm) narrators. I've had my fill of drama queens. Thanks to the author for an informative video without all the personality "flair". (office space)

  • the guy sounds fine I dont know what the hell you are talking about.

  • good video!

  • I don't get it. Why neglect the hardware raid but use a software raid?

  • cuz raid usually splits data in half on each hard drive and if something happens like if you take the hard drives out of the motherboard i think you can lose all your data.

  • it is depends on what raid do you use.

  • "They're gonna be held by gravity". LMAO, as is the case with almost every single component in my computer. Hard-core book-knowledge techies freak the hell out when they see my box. OMG YOU SHOULD HAVE THAT SCREWED DOWN! hehehehehehehehe.

  • --aleks: it's a file server.

--ssbbwlvr: At the time I built it, no, but lately I have been looking at external drive enclosures. It could allow the use of a smaller computer and a lot more drives. I might try it for my next server.

  • Alright, now I know for sure, you're a cool guy (over the internet) lawl. Really, get a life and try acting the same way in real life - See what happens. (Hint: It's a bit different away from your sweaty computer chair)

  • Cool video! Just curious, did you look into hooking up an external raid box to hold the drives? That would be easier to install and you could hook into the sata converter from the outside.

  • Wait i dont get it, You are making a server, Like a game server?

  • well done

  • Can you make a freenas server without raid 5?

  • Yes.

  • Sounds like my neighbours whipper snipper off in the distance of course.

  • why not freebsd and zfs?

  • And why not Solaris and ZFS? It's also free and in version 10/08 could be the root fs.

  • I'm going to have to check out Zumastor. One of the reasons I love FreeNAS is that every box in my house can talk to it (more or less). I'm supporting Vista, OSX, XP, Win2k and Ubuntu.

  • Unfortunately I could only get it to run on Ubantu 7.01 and on ide drives. So I run it on a virtual machine that is running raid. the Samba and NAS can be read from Windows or Unix clients. I can also use it as storage for VMware ESX.

  • I use Zumastor as a filesystem with NAS and Samba. It does a snapshot every hour of the day and recycles every day. It is true enterprise level file system.

  • In 2000 I helped EMI digitize all their music. It was 6 terabytes and costed a million dollars.

  • Amazing. Now with 1.5 TB drives on the market, you could make a FreeNAS server that's 6 TB with 4 drives.

  • Just wondering if you've seen any performance hit w/ the Rosewill SATA raid card? Does it create a bottleneck since 4 1TB drives are being pumped through 1 PCI slot? That version of PCI tops out at what, 480 MBPS per sec?

  • I'm only getting 100 MBPS anyway. If you need something faster than that, you're either going to have to do some serious tweaking or a different solution.

  • Why use software Raid and not a hardware RAID?

  • Because FreeNAS only recognizes certain hardware RAID devices. The software RAID in FreeNAS works fine.

  • at 3:30 ish u really sound like napolean dynamite

  • Gosh!

  • i think you should add some fans to the top of the case. hot air rises and cold air falls so all your doing now is exhausting cool air.

  • I am building a new server this weekend so a new video is coming...

  • Not to be rude or anything but if your worried about circulation then ou should also be worried about cable management...

    Just a tip. :)

  • I can respect that.

  • Try Rosewill on newegg.

  • Nice video. Just windering what was the RAID card called because I can't find anything with the name 'Roswell'?

  • HI,

this is so cool. I install it on a hard drive but for some strange reason, i tried to install it on a 128mb flash drive through one of the usb port and went to setup and disable the ide so it can only reads the flash drive and it did but won't install on it. The flash drive is fully operational. Am i missing something?

  • how much did those 4 hard drives cost?

  • I got them on NewEgg. I think, at the time, that they were a couple of hundred a piece.

  • now i know what i shall do with my old crapy intel pentium 4 pc XD

  • Hmmm, I'll have to check the wattage on the power supply. I don't think it goes that high. I suspect it's a 300 watt. The P4 chip inside is one of the early ones. It's not a later model power guzzler. Besides, I have a hot tub; power usage is relative.

  • Good Job, and the WD drives are nice and quite too. My only issue with this FreeNAS build is the amount of power required to run older PC's. Your NAS is probably drawing 400watts!

  • No, they are Western Digital drives.

  • You bought Samsung drives? :-(

I did the same on my fileservers, and god i regret it. I think of the last 20 samsung disks i bought, 7 of them failed within a year, and that is on a well ventilated servercube for simple storage

  • Wow, that's messed up. I've purchased for myself, or others, 10+ Samsungs and, knock on wood, none of them have given me a bit of trouble. I have heard of problems with the 1TB Samsung drives though.

  • Nice Video
