Monopods work well to reduce up/down shake but not so great for side to side (panning) shake. The monopd sits on your hand and can't rotate freely because of friction (obviously) so when your hand twist (just a little!) the camera follows and thats the jarring movement you see in the video.
Haha, I just realized, while watching all these makeshift steady cam rigs and makeshift shoulder rig videos; "Wait a minute... I have a Steadycam Merlin... I have a Redrock shoulder rig... ". Derp. Cool though!
@voidofambition It looks terrible alot of jarring movements. I think maybe he has left digital stabiliser on, and with panning shots some cameras behave very poorly. Give a stilted effect such as here.
I would say turn digital stabaliser off and try this, and try it with it on as well.
The results were somewhat mediocre. I've been using the Cam Caddie Scorpion, for $38 it's afforded me some amazingly smooth shots. It can also attach lights, mics, and even a monitor if need be. I highly recommend it to anyone in search of an independent setup.
lol! filming a beginner, with this accessory

not bad, the shake doesn't look bad at all! independent filmmakers should use this technique for chase scenes where you want that subtle shake.
