I grew up listening to the fivepenny Piece, my dad was/is a huge fan! I've never seen any videos before so this was fantastic. thankyou!
Do you happen to have the song with the lyrics " just watch out, they'll tell you owt, for they must think that we know nowt, prices rising, not surprising, just watch out they'll tell you owt"? I wanted to post it to FB.. perfect for todays economic climate!
a magician once said to my grandad "would you be surprised if i pulled a rabbit from your trousers" he said "very surprised, av getten two ferrits deign theer"
We were barge-masters carrying cotton among other goods and both my father and my uncles were thankful that in wartime at least there was food every day. Give you a clue: I was born at Starvation Buoys on the Thames. And the dockers got paid by the day, no ships, no pay - same in Manchester where we used to run to No9 dock I think. And no dole. Ain't life easy now.......
Thanx fer't txt......There aren't many mills left now, are there? They're being knocked down to build 'academies.' To think, 'they' call that 'progress!'
Delightful. I hadn't heard this song before but I shall come back to it several times. Your video montage sets it off beautifully. By pure coincidence, my wife and I are going to visit the Quarry Bank cotton mill museum at Styal next week. Not Lancashire, I realise, but not far away.
'Tis indeed, lass. I bought t' Fivepenny Piece CD after I heered this, and it's me favourit track on t' album. Thanks, trichoone, for posting it, and to thee, Jennie, for sharing it.
When I got married I lived in Shaw near Oldham and from our kitchen window we could count 26 mill chimneys. When we left to move south there were five.
What a video. That was just great. I came not from Lancashire but Linconshire on the Hull. Yours was cotton & ours was fish from trawlers battling the frozen wastes around Iceland & the North seas. They were tough times Trichoone.
Brilliant!! my friend Brilliant!! luv Five Penny Piece, superb images from our homes in good old Lancashire, and the mills from the good old days :'-) nice one my mate!!
Lancashire, one of the most beautiful parts of England. Lancaster, Blackpool, Morecambe, Fleetwood. Brings back great memories. Should visit the North West somewhere this or next year. Great "back in time"vid!

Just visited Queen St. Cotton Heritage Mill, Burnley, and the guide movingly spoke the words of 'KIng Cotton' which summed up all that we saw there.

When I see these pics I always wonder whether any of them are my family.
Virtually all my ancestors were cotton weavers.

I'd never heard of this group (I thought you were talking of the 60's group, The Five Pennies -[Juliet].
Anyway, as a sentimental Northerner (albeit a Yorkshireman), love this piece. Think I'm hooked.

Is shaw near Oldham? It's a shame about the mills, isn't it? I'm going mad over the demolition of one at the moment.
Thank you.
