No one has ever died on camera the way Brian Blessed did as Augustus, and not since, and it won't happen again for a very long time. Very few other actors could manage it: not just the physical challenge of keeping still for so long -- but you really do see the light going out. I remember watching it for the first time. It *dawns* on you that he's dead. And he looks it.
And now to find out he had to do that *twice*... Just astonishing.
Brian Blessed is amazing! Augustus' death scene did not have a freeze frame - he's actually lying there for several minutes with his eyes open and minimizing his breathing. That certainly had to take some real stamina!
'I, Claudius' is the greatest! I'll be waiting for the HBO/BBC remake, thought it will never eclipse the timeless original.
