yeah but in todays world a lot of people just assume that two very close friends ( especially boys) are gay.

When I watched this movie though I never thought that it was implying that they were gay. I thought maybe it could refer to a brotherly love. Boys are aloud to say they love each other. Also Hobbits are very open with their emotions, they are closer to children and therefor are able to have much closer friendships.
