  • thx for da info o do u happen to know where to get a starfish

  • @dashah9 No, but I happen to know where to learn how to spell. School.

  • whats that species called

  • @dashah9: No idea - they arrived on a piece of live rock. They're very small (less than an inch from tip to tip)

  • @dashah9 they r called starfish

  • Now that I think of it, 15 minutes seems small, but my sense is that they move slowly according to our senses, but when they wish to, they can move quite a ways in a few minutes. I recall taking the movie and then realizing that they had moved out of frame fairly quickly, and only being able to use perhaps 1/4 of what I had shot.

  • Thanks. I was imagining something more on the order of 4 or 5 hours. I guess these little seastars move about faster than I had imagined. I'm impressed that they are able to digest the algae fast enough to be moving on to a new location so quickly.

  • Good questions! Unfortunately, the answers are lost in the mists of time. I make the movies by taking many stills and merging them. The stills take up a huge amount of space, and are deleted once the movie is made. I would guess I took a still every 2-6 seconds, and that the movie took perhaps 15 minutes.

  • Can you tell us the total duration of this clip in real time?

Also, what frame rate did you use?

This is a very nice video - I show it to my students in my general biology an invertebrate biology classes. I wish I had thought to shoot a video like this myself!

  • Starfish are so friggen weird lol

    yet so cool... they're cute.

  • star fish are cute. i bet if we continue to dry them out and use them as ornaments they will come out of the sea and eat us all!

  • @NOLALongboards Gotta correct you there, ace. Sea stars have simple eyes (ocelli) at the end of each arm.
