  • Never boil off the alcohol!

  • While alcohol does "boil off", the process is by no means instantaneous - depending on how long you leave the wine mulling in the percolator, there may still be a reasonable percentage of the ethanol left.

  • mulled wine :-D

  • Heating wine, as with all hard drinks, removes the alcohol (or at least most of it).

  • Tried this with an electric percolator and it brewed and stopped. Wish he would be a little more specific about the percolating portion. Sad me.

  • Awesome! The idea of mulled wine has always appealed to me, but I had no idea how to make it. This makes it seem so easy! Thank you!

  • Old-school percolators: $100

    Cheap red wine: $12

    Whole spices: $10

Kids passed out by 8: Priceless.

  • I am going to make some tonight! It is in the teens here with a nasty wind chill!

  • good tip about helping the kids go to sleep on christmas eve.....im 23 and thats what i need to get me off on christmas eve

  • Encouraging alcoholism from an early age. :-)

  • @JimmyMacJones hey, it doesn´t contain alcohol in case you didn´t know XD

  • @CarmenMCS He doesn't point it out, as he should, but the wine is mulled well below boiling point, hence all the alcohol remains in it.

  • @mrbobandu Alcohol evaporates well below boiling point, hence the alcohol is boiled off. Alcohol boils away at 78.4° Celsius (173.1° Fahrenheit), well below 100° C (212° F). Most percolators, like the one he used, operate around 90.5° C and 93.3° C (195° F and 200° F).

  • @chompmyclit Ta for that, I'll keep that in mind next time I make it. I gotta say though, the one I did at Christmas didn't exactly leave me sober, I guess the heat was low enough on it.

  • thank god alton does not have childish notions about underage drinking
