Hi from Australia, just want to say that this is such a beautiful clip! the snow the horses, and the beautiful dogs having a blast! what a happy beautiful environment. Well done igallopon.
That is absolutley adorable. I was out in the snow playing with my 4 month old puppy, Bella, the other day. She's half pitbull half blue heeler. I would make a snowball and act like it was her favorite ball. I would throw it and she would try to pick it up and bring it back to me. It was so cute because she couldn't tell why it kept disappearing in her mouth xD
Yeah why did you chop off there tails ?? you probably chopped off there dew claws too..I wouldnt pay five bucks for your dogs...ACD's use there tails like a rudder so they can turn on a dime good luck though....
I dont know about your dogs when they had tails, but we have a working Queensland and she has a coloration on the end of her tail that is white tipped with black and it makes her really easy to follow trough our fields where we grow hay.
Tail cropping conversations aside... Damn! Those puppies are cute!
It's ironic. Idiots mutilate dogs, then don't keep them, and those that rescue them must answer for the stupidity.
The educated & enlightened don't dock. There is never a reason to mutilate a dog, except for human ignorance & cosmetic misconception. Honor each breed.
A tail isn' t only for balance, but a personality/mood indicator. If dogs can't tell if a dog is happily wagging or between the legs scared or submissive, it interferes with their sociability. It's crucial for them.
There are two different kinds of blue heelers (Australian Cattle Dogs.) The regular Australian Cattle Dog, and the Stumpy Tailed Australian Cattle dog. The Stumpy Tails are born with short tails. Their entire body is shaped differently than the regular ones. We have compared them at dog shows. I recently saw an ad for blue heelers for sale, and it said "tails have been docked." That shouldn't happen. But some are born that way!
@iowanative mate there's 2 kinds of heelers.... real heelers that is... long leg breed thats a bit lanky, or the proper pure breed, short, stocky, wide headed ones.. i dunno what you you americans do to make them like that but im in aus and all my heelers heads are wider than a truck lol
I don't think we "do" anything to them. I'm sure that breeding along the way may not be as "pure" as Australian Cattle Dogs. My daughter's dog is the more long-legged one, and is a Stumpy Tail. I have seen the heelers at dog shows that have shorter legs and wide bodies....shorter necks. Face looks alot different too.
We get our puppy tomorrow! Solid blue male and totally cute. My girls are so excited. Gonna name him "Winchester" like the riffles. Should be a good mix with our five horses. Was that Allison Krause or Amy & Karen?
Lots of Cattle dog pups are born with out tails naturally. Many poeple who own working cattle dogs dock them to keep them from being stepped on by cattle and being torn off (I've seen it, not pretty).
I didn't cut their tails off. They were that way when I rescued them. I would never have bobbed their tails. I've rescued horses, dogs, cats, and I'm always curious about folks who make such comments -- what have you done? And Jennaleed25 is correct about the docking of the tails of real working dogs. I have a friend in Romania who docks the tails of his working dogs to keep the wolves from grabbing the dogs by the tail and killing them. Now that's a dose of reality, eh?
In Australia we have a breed called Stumpy Tail Cattle Dogs which are born without tails. They are similar in looks to a Cattle Dog but are a bit taller and finer.
dont you hate it when people are like they need the tail for balance and agility....... my opinion is that my heeler can run fast than a dog wit a tail any day.(my heeler has a stub)
@sanpeyote there is 2 types ofd cattle dogs Stumpy and regular aand they are born like that. there tails are not docked. is like there is a stupy tail cat. i hgave a regular ACD and my best mate as a red stump xD
@sanpeyote ...docking is not a cosmetic procedure. It's actually a better idea to dock working dog's tails because it prevents all kinds of incidents from happening. Also, acd's are fine in terms of sharp terms with docked tails. Where did you learn your facts?
You need to check your facts about docking. There could be an argument about hygiene but that is moot if you actually take care of your dog. Docking is a cruel procedure and usually done without regard to the dog. Further reputable breeders do not condone the practice nor does the AKC.
@DominoShadow You need to check your facts. Docking is a cosmetic procedure and while some may argue that there is "hygenic" benefits, that is a minor concern if you actually take care of your dog. It is a cruel practice that is done with little concern about the dog's well being. This is why NO reputable breeder nor the AKC recognizes the cruel and unnecessary practice.
@bullitt699 Why did you post the 3 times? And...you're actually wrong. It is not just an aesthetic practice. It really does benefit a lot of breeds. However, if you choose not to recognize that...it's your life, you can do what you choose. However if I buy a breed of dog which usually gets docked or cropped, I will assess the dog and decide whether it will benefit or not. In the end though it's the owner's call. The procedures do not hurt the dogs. And humans benefit from similar practices.
@DominoShadow The multiple posting was a you tube glitch - Completely outside of the point. Give me a logical argument about the benefits, you can't because there isn't one. If you know anything about working breeds you'll know the tail IS important, to say otherwise is just plain ignorant. More so is your comment about humans benefiting from similar practices?? Really??? Idiot. I'm done - laughing my ass off at "similar practices"
@bullitt699 For working dogs; having their tail docked can be especially important. Farm dogs will often have their tails docked to protect them from severe injury. Guard dogs benefit without doubt from tail docking. These practises prevent working dogs from having their tails broken, pulled or caught. Tail docking is NEVER done for aesthetic purposes. However, ear cropping is occassionally done for aesthetics. It is usually done to silghtly increase hearing and stop the chances of infection.
@DominoShadow That's an internet argument and not one from real world. If you were arguing from actual experience rather than shit you read then we wouldn't be having this discussion.
@DominoShadow Actually judging by your "expert" comments on Dobermans and Pitts in other videos - it seems that your career as "dog rehabilitation psychologist" ... wait. Are you Cesar Milan??? Oh please upload some of your personal videos!! If you aren't - you might not want to plagiarize his lines from the show.
@bullitt699 Working dogs are usually the only dogs to have these procedures done. Otherwise, it is done to breeds who traditionally have it done and for good reasons. Like I said the procedures do not hurt the dogs. And humans do have similar procedures. For instance. Tumors are often removed, ears are often augmented to help hearing...the list goes on. By similar I mean any procedure that removes or changes a piece of the body. As for your idiotic comment on "hygenic" purposes....
@DominoShadow Since you posted in multiple locations - hygiene is often used as an argument (A POOR one at that - as I originally stated. Its not a valid argument.) Are you SERIOUSLY comparing the removal of a dog's tail to the removal of a tumor in humans?????? LMFAO!!!! Idiot. I'm done with you- you can reply another 10 times- you are showing your ignorance in every post.
@bullitt699 Cropping and Docking is NEVER done for hygeine. Just the idea of you thinking that up in your head shows me how little credibility you have. By the way, the AKC and CKC will not accept a doberman, rottweiller, schnauzer... or any traditional cropped/docked breed if it it not docked or cropped. Do your research. No only this but "reputable" breeders will give you the choice. Like I said, bottom line there are advantages to both. However, you more often hear about aesthetics when...
@DominoShadow Hygiene IS argued as one of the arguments (as is tail damage- which is also WEAK argument in practice). Look it up, I concur its a ridiculous argument as I already stated. As to my credibility, I grew up in the world of breeding/show/obedience trials of working dogs. In all those years - we never saw "tail damage" that is so often used as basis . Also makes you wonder if its so "valid" why then police dogs tails aren't docked as procedure if its such a danger.
@DominoShadow We aren't talking about Dobermans, Rottweillers or Schnauzers. We are talking about the working breed of the ACD, Pay attention. That breed should NEVER have its tail docked per the AKC.
@bullitt699 If you actually took the time to read what I said; you'd understand the content. Honestly, if you ever had any experience with dogs you'd understand what I am saying but you are so delusional. I am merely trying to help you. In the end it is the owner's call and meddler's like you have no say in the matter,
@DominoShadow When people don't want tails docked or cropped. Most people will say "I don't want the docked and cropped because I like the way they look better anyway." Most people who want it done will say "I want my dog to be safe and healthy." It just depends on how you look at each arguement. In the end though, it's the owner's choice and no one has a right to interfere with that.
@DominoShadow Also just remembered. Another "similar" practise is circumcision and castration (sorry boys).Circumsision is often chosen due to hygeine and also to reduce the risk of some cancers. However, it can ALSO be done for appearance. Castration can be done due to cancers and in some very strange cases, for appearance. Similar things can be said for women.
@DominoShadow Actually, I can appreciate this comment. Which brings me to this, the AVMA condemns any ear/tail docking procedures for cosmetic reasons. Meaning unless there is a MEDICAL reason to remove the tail. Using your analogy of the tumor- there is a medical reason to remove it. The fact remains that even the AKC recognizes that tail docking should not be done on the ACD- that this breed needs its tail.
..with all this pretty good commentary..I missed the deal..have we decided or verified if these are stumpies or Cattle dogs with docked tails...I will spare you my lsit of 10 stupidest reasons for tail docking that I have collected from ignorant ranchers, farmers, cowboys and rednecks...not that there is anything wrong with them.,..
Fortunately most people do NOT dock tails anymore. We saw marked improvement with the advent of the internet in about 1995 in our rescue group, where we fostered about 300+ ACDs within ten years time. So there's hope that the more remote people (ie. The Amish) will get the information to them, too, that they aren't really supposed to have them docked. All it takes is edumakashun!!
Here's to Heelers! Best freakin' breed God allowed! I've had'em for 20+ years and loved every one I've had the privelage to know. My current pup, "Crissy" is an absolute nut! She's more fun and playful than any other I've had. They are damn fine working dogs, too! I've worked in the shipping pens w/Queenslands and a rotten ol blue roan mare with much success. Thanks for the video! If I ever learn how, maybe I'll post Crissy at play. God bless, thanks for the dogs, music and all..
Yes, lots of "Heeler People" dock the tail. I prefer them to have the tail, as it is a balance aid. I believe if God wanted them to have no tail, He'da left it off. This is NO SLAM to those that prefer docked. My current Heeler has no tail, doesn't seem to miss it, either.
I can't see any reason for a docked tail, it is used for balance and sharp, cattle dodging turns. However, I am open to new ideas. If anyone can give me a good reason for docking, I would appreciate it.
I think it comes from ignorant people confusing ACDs with Australian Shepards.
i have 2 of these dogs, 1 old and 1 young. they're really great dogs, too. when the old one was younger he caught me when i fell off a truck when i was a baby, probly saved my life
Blue heelers are the best dogs for kids, nobody will hurt your child when the dog is around! My heeler helped save my son from drowning. They are great dogs for sure. They will bite somebody they don't like though.
My ACD puppy gets crazy when exposed to dirt, water(especially water..) and mud...but he hasn't come in contact with snow yet. I know he'll be absolutely crazy when he does..
I love your video - between the goofy cattle dogs and the song (one of my favorites) it made me cry. I miss my Queensland Heeler to this day - she was the smartest, sweetest dog I've ever known. Someday I'll get another one...
I didn't remove their tails. Their tails were already docked when I got them. And I brought them home from a less than desirable home, believe me. I would never dock a dog's tail or a horse's tail. But they are wonderful dogs, despite their being tail-less.
So cute! Thanks for sharing this. My rescued Blue Heeler has a "wiggle-stump," as I call it, but my first one had her full tail. The pups sure are are cute; I love Australian Cattle Dogs!
One of the breeds used in the development of the cattle dogs is the tailless British Smithfield. I have a heeler who is a natural stumpy tail. The Stumpy Tail has been recognised as a seperate breed in Austrialia since the late 80s, but the trai is not uncommon in blue and red heelers.
With respect to pure breads, the stumpy predates the heeler by about 50 years, but the concept was simillar and many of the breeds used were the same.
I was specifically refering to the ubiquitous ranch dogs all over the American Southwest which are descended from blue and red heelers (including McNivens since stricken from the official breed), Queensland heelers, and dingos imported in mass in the 30's and 40's. A large number of the working dogs in the US are descended from McNiven's reinterpritation of the breed. My point is that the stumpy tail trait occasionaly pops up among these "ranch dogs".
thats hilarious, it reminds me of my blue heeler every winter. she absolutely loves the snow and cant stand the heat for some reason. you can point at a spot in the snow and she'll dig it out with her nose haha, and i was lucky i picked her up from a drug bust and her brother is the cranky, ill-mannered one.
I have had several breeds of dog in my life, but back in 2002,I got my first ACD.His name is Jinjo, and he's an all WHITE heeler with 2 black patches over his eyes and ears.A perfect mask. After having a cattle dog,I will NEVER have another breed. The perfect breed of pooch. Not too big,not too small, tough(like all heelers he thinks he's 10 ft tall and bullet proof),loyal, and VERY smart.....or should I say "clever".And if you have an ACD,you know what I mean by "clever".Thanks for posting.Very cute.
I have a beautiful 3 year old female blue cattle dog, Asja she is my shadow my protector and my spoilt baby also she has chewed every pair of my shoes! and we live in Australia.
Mine seems to suffer from anxiety whenever she sees me tryint to leave the house with out her. She wants to work, and I just don't have any farm animals for her to terrorize, ya know? She just wants to be my shadow, and that could be your doggies wish. Good luck!
There's a reason they call them "velcro dogs" or "shadow dogs". They will absolutely FREAK if left alone for long periods of time. They love to be right at your feet. And notice, even when they run up ahead of you, they will stop, turn around, and look for you to make sure you are still there. And they need a job. Even if its something as simple as letting them out to chase birds out of the yard. Make em think they are doing something.
You are very sweet. :-) I really love the heelers. Wish mine, poor babes, hadn't had their tails docked. But I don't herd sheep with them and they don't really have to work hard for a living. Just keep me company and follow our horses when we ride up in the mountains.
Beautiful dogs and horses- don't let that comment get under your skin- it was a cheap shot. Everyone with even half a heart knows that even dogs who had the misfortune of being cut by dockers still need fabulous loving homes!
Blue Heelers should NEVER have their tails bobbed... The tail is a necessary componenent to balance in the breed. Started with a couple of hillbillies who couldn't figure out how to close a cattle gate without catching the tail in it.
Name calling is the last resort of people with low IQs. These dogs' tails were bobbed when I got them home. I don't believe in bobbing dog tails or docking horse tails. I have a draft horse and luckily got him young enough so that his tail wasn't docked. I have rescued many dogs and horses over the years.
There are two different breeds of cattle dog, regular and stumpy tailed......nobody is docking the tails assholes- it is how they are born. Do your research before you take the high ground dummies.

And if a dog is going to be dragged off & killed by a predator, it WON'T be by its TAIL. Duh.
Some dogs are born stumpy, but most are victims of ignorant owners unfortunately. Most intelligent owners with respect for dogs, already know better.

I was wondering, should I be worried about my pup's toes? How long should I let her play in the snow? Or should I put little socks on her feet?
My mom has a red with no tail out of texas
mine is a blue with tail out of california. :D

I've never seen a short-tailed blue heeler before. Were they docked? Happy looking dogs.
ethicomm 4 years ago
Yes, lots of "Heeler People" dock the tail. I prefer them to have the tail, as it is a balance aid. I believe if God wanted them to have no tail, He'da left it off. This is NO SLAM to those that prefer docked. My current Heeler has no tail, doesn't seem to miss it, either.
sonofrattler 4 years ago
God? This is a breed designed by people lol...
I can't see any reason for a docked tail, it is used for balance and sharp, cattle dodging turns. However, I am open to new ideas. If anyone can give me a good reason for docking, I would appreciate it.
I think it comes from ignorant people confusing ACDs with Australian Shepards.
nomadofthehills 4 years ago
PS, this wasn't a shot at the poster of this video, I know you are against docking.

Ever seen a dog with a broken tail. It hurts them badly.

i have 2 of these dogs, 1 old and 1 young. they're really great dogs, too. when the old one was younger he caught me when i fell off a truck when i was a baby, probly saved my life

Blue heelers are the best dogs for kids, nobody will hurt your child when the dog is around! My heeler helped save my son from drowning. They are great dogs for sure. They will bite somebody they don't like though.

Ahh!! O_O
Thats so cute...and psycho....I'm scared now. xD

Someday I'll get another one...
pinkspokes 4 years ago
I didn't remove their tails. Their tails were already docked when I got them. And I brought them home from a less than desirable home, believe me. I would never dock a dog's tail or a horse's tail. But they are wonderful dogs, despite their being tail-less.
igallopon 4 years ago
So cute! Thanks for sharing this. My rescued Blue Heeler has a "wiggle-stump," as I call it, but my first one had her full tail. The pups sure are are cute; I love Australian Cattle Dogs!
SuzieF2 4 years ago
Why would u remove the tails? I have a red/blue heeler cross and he has his full tail he still herds cows and horses and sheep ok. So why?
Corbinlver2012 4 years ago
Why would you remove their tails. that's just mean.
s4057678 4 years ago
One of the breeds used in the development of the cattle dogs is the tailless British Smithfield. I have a heeler who is a natural stumpy tail. The Stumpy Tail has been recognised as a seperate breed in Austrialia since the late 80s, but the trai is not uncommon in blue and red heelers.
MikePhoenix85239 4 years ago
Stumpies are actually not very close to ACDs. They have a very different lineage.
nomadofthehills 4 years ago
With respect to pure breads, the stumpy predates the heeler by about 50 years, but the concept was simillar and many of the breeds used were the same.
MikePhoenix85239 4 years ago
I was specifically refering to the ubiquitous ranch dogs all over the American Southwest which are descended from blue and red heelers (including McNivens since stricken from the official breed), Queensland heelers, and dingos imported in mass in the 30's and 40's. A large number of the working dogs in the US are descended from McNiven's reinterpritation of the breed. My point is that the stumpy tail trait occasionaly pops up among these "ranch dogs".
MikePhoenix85239 4 years ago
Interesting. Thanks for the elaboration :)

Beautifully put together. Your dogs, the music. I'll come back to this.

thats hilarious, it reminds me of my blue heeler every winter. she absolutely loves the snow and cant stand the heat for some reason. you can point at a spot in the snow and she'll dig it out with her nose haha, and i was lucky i picked her up from a drug bust and her brother is the cranky, ill-mannered one.

Not too big,not too small, tough(like all heelers he thinks he's 10 ft tall and bullet proof),loyal, and VERY smart.....or should I say "clever".And if you have an ACD,you know what I mean by "clever".Thanks for posting.Very cute.

zerg232 5 years ago
Mine seems to suffer from anxiety whenever she sees me tryint to leave the house with out her. She wants to work, and I just don't have any farm animals for her to terrorize, ya know? She just wants to be my shadow, and that could be your doggies wish. Good luck!
bgr8flgrl 4 years ago
There's a reason they call them "velcro dogs" or "shadow dogs". They will absolutely FREAK if left alone for long periods of time. They love to be right at your feet. And notice, even when they run up ahead of you, they will stop, turn around, and look for you to make sure you are still there. And they need a job. Even if its something as simple as letting them out to chase birds out of the yard. Make em think they are doing something.
scrawneypaledude 4 years ago
They require mass quantities of exercise, too. A cattle thats constantly cooped up is a shame. Peace.

was going to mention the docked tails ,but after reading your reply to comments it seems you are GREAT! and so are they.
microverdict 5 years ago
You are very sweet. :-) I really love the heelers. Wish mine, poor babes, hadn't had their tails docked. But I don't herd sheep with them and they don't really have to work hard for a living. Just keep me company and follow our horses when we ride up in the mountains.
igallopon 5 years ago
nice dogs I just picked up two reds from the pound. One of them has its tail docked not my fault. looks like your pups are very happy
doyoulikenachos 5 years ago
thanks for your nice comment. They are extremely happy and goofy pups. We love them very much. I just love the heelers.

Just delete their comments. Thank you for rescuing!! :) World needs more people like you!
BethyHatesYou 5 years ago
Beautiful dogs and horses- don't let that comment get under your skin- it was a cheap shot. Everyone with even half a heart knows that even dogs who had the misfortune of being cut by dockers still need fabulous loving homes!
plainandtall 5 years ago
Blue Heelers should NEVER have their tails bobbed... The tail is a necessary componenent to balance in the breed. Started with a couple of hillbillies who couldn't figure out how to close a cattle gate without catching the tail in it.
catsnjags 5 years ago
see my answer above to shiambles. How many dogs and horses have YOU rescued?
igallopon 5 years ago
no tails? stupid owners
shiambles 5 years ago
Name calling is the last resort of people with low IQs. These dogs' tails were bobbed when I got them home. I don't believe in bobbing dog tails or docking horse tails. I have a draft horse and luckily got him young enough so that his tail wasn't docked. I have rescued many dogs and horses over the years.
