Actually, Mr. Gilman, underrated is defined as: "to rate or evaluate too low; underestimate". The "general public"doesn't know these guys at all, so for all practical purposes the "rating" is done by those who are familiar with them and their music. These guys are highly respected (and never underrated) by the music community at large - and their musical talents are not defined by how widely recognized they are...
No offense, but the idea that Dave LaRue and Van Romaine are "underrated" is one put forth only by those who aren't familiar with them. Anyone who is familiar with their talents "rate" them both very highly indeed. So, while I do agree they deserve accolades for their considerable abilities, anyone who rates them as mere backup to Steve just doesn't get it - and needs to listen to SMB more closely.
100% agree. Saw them a while ago in San Diego at 4th&B and it was total blast. Best live sound I've ever heard from any band. They unfortunately started with this composition and because the sound was not adjusted well yet, it sadly sounded very flat. This is one of my most beloved pieces of music, absolute top of individual skills put together.
Perhaps we'll all get very lucky and see Steve, Dave, and Van touring in support of their new CD coming out in September. Unfortunately for us, Steve must put Deep Purple ahead of any other committment, and while he has expressed a desire to tour with SMB, it appears that DP always seems to change their schedule at the last minute, thereby keeping any SMB tour in limbo. Sucks for us, but after so many years of relative poverty, Steve finally has some big bucks. He spoiled us terribly...
"underrated" means "by the general public." of course there are always the few who are capable of comprehending and appreciating the work of such as these, as i do (i am a former student of dave's, among other things), but the point is that these guys never gain *widespread* recognition. so, regardless of the fact that they are my favorite band, it is absolutely accurate to say that they are underrated.
@ pngilman: indeed. I wish him well. I love the fact that he is well liked by all DP band - they actually smile on the podium now - but I miss SMB greatly. Their show willl be forever in my heart as THE #1 show I have ever seen. Jeff Beck is not very far behind but SMB is just trio from heavens....
Steve is awesome but, don't forget about the other two guys. Dave is an awesome Bass player and Van is an awesome Drummer they both are so underated they too deserve some accolades.

Humbling. I saw this tour in New Haven. Amazing what expressive range you can get with a trio.
