Hi Upbeat...Its not metric modulation really. This is about accessing the vocabulary of 6/8 and transferring it to the music. If you try to do the phrasing with out thinking this way its impossible. This system basically is ear training so that you can hear the vocabulary properly. Hope that helps.
Fantastic. Thanks for this - I have been a drum student at Berklee for 5 semesters and haven't heard this detailed of an explanation about the connection between cut time and 6/8 in Afro Cuban music! Great!
most culture's utilize the interplay between 4 beat and 6 beat cycles, the irish and native americans, Indians and Indonesians come to mind. I think the Indian's do it the best though by just playing in a 12 beat cycle that combines the two rather than in 6 or 4 - longer phrases.
Wow, this video is extremely helpful. I've yet to completely wrap my head around feeling both 6/8 and cut together and separately... and playing them both ways. Playing that clave feel under your solo was mind-blowing, I hope to have that coordination and comfort one day.
nice, im 15 and i have been getting into brazilian/ jazz/ afro cuban, and i am starting to really understand it, i think it has its own language, alphebet, formulas, and this will help me continue on to be as good as you.
So that's why the basic afro-cuban pattern fits over everything! It's actually fitting UNDER everything...
This approach explains so much about how indigenous Timbale players can play mind trips like triplet figures over cut time cascara patterns - It's not triplets at all, it's a shift to 6/8! This idea of blending cut time and 6/8 and the way it's presented are revolutionary (at least to me). Thanks for this video! I needed it, and it's already changed the way I think about time.
in all honesty, the beginning of the vid had me convinced this would be some load of crap expert village type vid, but you REALLY know ur shit and this really helped :)
thanks fbbl. Yeah...that expert village stuff is just atrocious. I cant believe they do that! Truly a shame. But I thank you kindly for dropping me your lines. Means allot.
I thought I was the only one who noticed. Most of the stuff on expert village is crap. Now, if I see that a videos on expert village, that automatically counts against it.
Man, great lesson... Gotta learn this! It seams so hard. oh and i just realized in the end of the clip that i have your book! I didnt regonised you, but i regonised the RTS! haha
Hey Phil, Beautiful playing and great teaching method! Very clear and concise. I'll definetely check it out. Thanks for your nice comment on my playing . Take care, Max
adeart...the whole point is to help musicians with a western musical background, who are semi pro to pro...absorb this new language in an organized efficient way. I guess you missed that point. Other wise you have to go live in cuba for years abd still run the risk of not coming away with what you need.
nicely said! something like this is great for me im 23 and play rock/funk style with lots of charts and sight reading type background.. i absolutly love this music and i was turned onto this style back in 2006 thanks to a very inspirational clinic from Phil at the Druminstitute, also would like to take this chance to thank phil for that, who knows maybe i'll be working playing Latin as good as you oneday man!! thanks again.
Thank you for the kind words pdrums. I hope you will continue in your journey with Latin music. We need you and as many musicians as possible to learn this music. So that we can be sure it carries on into the future. The more musicians know it, the more people will hear it and love it. Thus, creating a more beautiful world for us all to live in.
latin jazz is my life... and when i saw this tutoriall... at the beginning i went... WTF... yeah right... and then... little by little it all built up and made so much more sense. amazing, conrats, and thankyou very much,

Thats right! Eventually this system allows your ears to adjust to the vocabulary. Making life a lot easier when you play this type of music.
I am very happy that it helped you. Stay in touch

sometimes western culture is too intellectual in its approach to music. too analytical. these other cultures just feel it...
