@thatnikonguy Hey Matt, have you considered using Sigma/Tokina lenses, would love to see you do more dogfights/comparisons perhaps maybe with this lens and Sigma 18-250mm & Nikkor 18-200...
Hello Matt , well I did it, and you are right this lens is amazing, having lot of fun and for an amateur it works well for me as I do a lot of motorcycle trips and this allows me to have two lens into one and saves on space and weight. Excellent value for the money.
Hey Matt, thanks for this review! I have a crop-format Nikon and kit lenses, and eventually want to upgrade to something like the D700 for more serious photography. However, before I can afford that, I want to add a couple of good lenses so I can shoot portraits, low-light, and macro. I know you said this lens is good quality, so would you feel comfortable with the quality of shots produced enough to use it for clients?
It's definitely not a lens one buys for achieving perfect image quality, the strengths of this lens are its huge zoom range (if one would use 18-55 and 55-200 lenses one would have to change the lens often), light weight and moderate price, thus a nice lens for sightseeing during vacations.
It's image quality is definitely worse than that of 90% of the other lenses out there, but again one doesn't buy it for achieving professional results, thus it's ok for vacations.
there is also the sigma 18 200. but both lenses have variable apertures which do not allow much light much into the camera. also the small apertures do not give bokeh and strong contrast. the trade off is convenience and less weight, but these are great walk around lenses.
Hi Matt. I have this lens for 2 years now and I'm quite happy, except the poor image quality and extreme softness above 200 mm, and also the focus isn't great. But great value for the money and it's an all around lens for DX. The vibration compensation (VC) is great. I'm using it on my Nikon D60.
Tamron lens, you just can't beat the quality. I own the 90mm macro, the 180mm macro, as well as a 10-24mm 1:3.5-4.5 I have been very pleased with these lenses. I would love to get my hands on this lense, and the rebate offered until the end of Dec brings it into the affordable range
@ikki9394 I haven't used the VRII you mention, I used the original though. Both good. The Nikon is heavier, maybe faster, but this is lighter and a lot more zoom range.
It was a good lens. I sold my kit lenses that came with my D50 back in the day to get one all around lens for road trips. Did a good job until it got stolen :(

I won the PZD version of this lens, it was pretty good. However I sold it as I didn't have much of a use for it.
